I am also having trouble playing other region games on my Wii.
I have the images of two j-ntsc games, but my modded Pal Wii recognises them but locks up after i hit Start.
Any suggestions. I have WiFree v2.45.
Cheers.

I don't think the two (PAL and NTSC) are compatible. I mean, maybe the game is playing, but your TV won't let you see it since it's a different signal.

I have had some success with +R, but all the -R discs I have tried have worked perfectly. Go with -R to make sure it works.

is it common that as you initially put in the backed up disc it sometimes cannot be read, and other times it can... im thinking it might be the type of dvd im using (TDK +R), but im not sure.

Yes, use a good quality DVD-R disc, not +R.

Since this seems liek a decent issue and i see it evrey 5 minuites....dvd+r or dvd-r all depend on your chip..the wii key for example can use dvd-r dvd+r and dvd+rw...just see what you chip can read and the dont use cheap disks and your ok...and if your games sometimes work and someimtes they dont...try unplugging teh system and tryign again or try using betetr qulity disks

If you skimp on getting an inferior chip instead of a WIIKEY chip then you are bound to come unstuck. Also Ritek DVD-R discs are proven winners for most consoles.

Does the drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827136083
come with cables?

Does it need a SATA power adapter or the usual 4 pin power connector?

Can it use EIDE cables?

Nope, your mobo came with the cables. No power adapter necessary, it's not even SATA. Therefore, it does use EIDE cables.

If I have a laptop, which drive will I need to buy to backup the games?

Does the drive I buy depend on the mod chip I have, or will any chip and drive combo work?

Download BitTorrent files. You can't beat free! If that isn't feasible, then make a friend that works in a video store or something like that.

No, you just need to buy a LG GDR model drive like in the first post. Currently there aren't any laptop ones, so you'll have to buy a desktop one and get an external enclosure (5.25 perferrably, but 3.5 will work, you can't use the cover though) A friend only has a laptop and uses this setup, and it works great.

I have read throught this whole thread and I think I am ready to start.
I see that I need an LG burner, so I am going to buy one that is listed in the first thread.
My only question is which mod chip is now recommended?
I see people are saying the wiikey, but I have read in here somewhere that it is no longer supported.
What about the Wiid? Is that one still supported? Does that one work?
I also read someting about the leads being cut in side the console.
How can you tell with out opening? is there a serial number range?

Normally I do that, but there're some games that I can't find. What's the best website to rent from?

Depending on where you live, either GottaPlay or GameFly. I'm in the midwest, and GameFly only has an East and West coast shipping station, so I have only received four games in the last three weeks. I'm quitting before I get billed again. GottaPlay is a lot faster for me since they have 9 shipping stations, but their selection isn't as great. (new games show up as "not available" for a while) If you live near LA or near Pittsburgh, go with GameFly. Otherwise, GottaPlay is better.

Edit: I have the "two games at a time" from both of these plans, I already have got 6 games from GottaPlay in the past three weeks with two more on the way. Just a comparison to what I said about GameFly.

GTA-Wireless Modifies the Nintendo Wii

Located in the cored of Downtown Toronto, Gta-wireless offers a wide range of services. Modifying the Nintendo Wii with the Wiikey is one of the services we offer as well. The Nintendo Wii only allows certain games to be played, but Unlocking, "Chipping", or "Modifying" the Nintendo Wii takes approximately 2 hours to accomplish, and once it's completed, it enables you to play home brewed games on your console. However the ones sold after June are more difficult to unlock because of the serial number and system is slightly different. There's more infomation on our website www.gta-wireless.com.
-Supports multi-disc games for the Wii and Gamecube
-Supports DVD-R/ true DVD+R and RW support (no bitsetting required)

Modifying your Nintendo Wii starts from $50!!

Hey can I ask where you guys all got your system modded? Did you do it all yourself or what? I have never soldered before so I don't want to attempt it on my wii. However, I would rather not pay someone $100 bucks to do 5 minutes of work. Anyways, do you think I should attempt it or do you think anyone with any soldering skills could do it easily. (I have a wiikey)
Thanks guys.

No. A downloaded iso is just a game ripped using RawDump. You need a modchip installed if you want to do more than look at the disc :)

Don't even try it yourself. A few dollars (100 is a bit high, maybe 40 or somewhere around there) is worth not having a $250 brick next to your tv. I did mine myself, but I have done other systems in the past. I grabbed an old mobo and practiced on it when I first started about 8 years ago. I did many playstations, and the Wii was tough for me, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it if you've never soldered in your life.
