In general I would start by burning the original versions, and following the directions that come with them. Then, if things do not work, I would move to filechopped/padded ones, etc...
Your Wii should be updated at 3.2 with Wiikey 1.9g and, if you want, REGION OVERRIDE turned ON.
Hi Rafadawn ...
I think what puzzles me is which 1.9 to use.
there is 1.9g, 1.9b, and 1.9g beta fix.
Also, after I updated WiiKey to 1.9(whatever ) .. is Region Override turned on by default? ... do I still need to use the 1.3 config disc to turn RegionOverRide ON ?
thx

Here is some general info:
I bought the chip and soldered it (with a great amount of effort) into my launch wii. That is it.
I have a launch Wii, and have the SMG firmware update installed. I just soldered the chip in last night, but it wont run the 1.9g install disk. It says all over the place "use 1.9g for the SMG update," but I dont know if I am supposed to install something before that. What firmware is my card already? Do I need to install 1.3 first?
I tried the disk (1.9g) and the wii couldnt read it. I hope I soldered everything alright... Should I just keep burning random firmware updates and trying them?
I just tried the 1.3 disk as well. It wont work either. I am going to burn the 1.2 disk and, if that doesnt work, check to see if everything is soldered correctly.
Also, I have seen people use electrical tape over their WiiKey. Is there any reason for this other than to keep it in place? I soldered it so it shouldnt move around much...
The 1.2 disk didnt work. I have no idea what to do.
Did Brawl include an update? Because I must have installed it. If that makes any difference, then what do I do? Did it come with an update that wiikey cant get past?

If/when you open the Wii up to check the solder connections, be sure to use a continuity tester. It will sound a tone if the pads are connected with a good connection. Much better than a visual check.
Also, I am in the same boat as you. Launch Wii, new Chip, no disks load. I have checked, rechecked, ad even resoldered my chip to no avail. I have not tried the first config disk that people seem to be getting success with just because I was gone all yesterday and that seems to be when this revelation came about but I will do it as soon as I get home and post my results.
At this point, I am VERY confident of my hardware modding skills ( I even tested across the chip's power and ground to ensure it was drawing power) but not confident at all of my disc burning skills. For this reason, I am using SSBB as a negative test disk. If the wiikey is functional in any fashion, SSBB WILL NOT load. If it does, your wiikey is non-functional.
If this "OG" recovery disc trick dosen't work, I will just start burning every version/flavor of any and all config/recovery disk I can get my hands on, grind them into a fine powder and make an elaborate, bhuddest monk-inspired sand mandala on my livingroom floor and hope the Wii Gods are pleased enough to bestow upon my Wiikey a working firmware flash. Yes folks, voodoo hacking. It may be the only answer... LOL
*EDIT- to be clear, I mean RETAIL copy of SSBB, not backup. Many poeple are successfully running SSBB as a backup.

This may be a dumb question, but is there any way to update the Wii (not the Wiikey) to the newest firmware without having access to the internet. I'm on a college campus and can't get the Wii updates through wireless, and because of that I can't get SSBB to play on my Wii (with a Wiikey installed). My Wii is updated through 3.1U.
Thank You!

Reading around it sounds like I am SOL.
Because I installed the Brawl update first (which is to say: before upgrading the WiiKey), I will not be able to get my WiiKey to work?
Is there any way to downgrade my wii's firmware? I really want to get this to work. It sucks that I paid for this if I cant use it.
If this is true (and hey, I am an idiot so maybe it isn't), what are the chances of me ever getting this to work? It seems I would need to downgrade my wii's firmware, something I have been told is impossible.

WaitWaitWait. Are you saying that if the wii is running 3.2 firmware and you have never updated your wiikey, the wiikey will not work? This would be the first time I have heard that. Where else did you see that discussed?
I am in the same situation as you. Launch Wii with 3.2 Wiikey installed correctly. No functionality. Like I said before, I still have hope concerning the non-padded, non-filechopped recovery disk with the unplug method but barring that, the situation that you describe may explain my case too.
Someone wanna weigh in on this one? Can a wii with 3.2 have a wiikey installed and still have the wiikey recognize updates? (Yes, I understand that, based on the first post, 3.2 is safe for wiikey but that may just be for those of you who have already USED the wiikey, such as updating firmware, loading config disk, ect.)

@blkhawk:
There is only one 1.9g update. 1.9g beta fix is the same thing.
Install the 1.9g update. Usually that does not change the Region Override settings. However, you will lnow if you need to turn that ON if some of the Wii backups do not work or games from different regions do not run.
What I reccommend is stay within one region and not play games from other regions, unless they are listed as safe in the Region Compatibility list. Does that mean that you keep the Region Override Off? Actually, I think that, after updating to 1.9g, you should use a config disc (regular or Hacked 1.3) to turn Region Override on. Then use Wiibrickblocker to check the region code of images before burning them.
Where's the party?!?

Sorry if this has been posted (I didnt see it), but do you have any ideas, Rafadawn?
I may be wrong about that, I dont know where I heard it. I could have made it up...
I have tried everything I can think of. I have a stack of like 10 DVDs that do nothing. The latest failure is the hacked 1.3 GCOS update. I thought this was the "if nothing else works, this will!" update.
I guess I will try 1.2 GCOS now.
What does GCOS mean by the way? I use WiiUI, but I have no idea what is going on...

3.2 is safe for old and new Wiikey installations.

For any number of reasons the Wiikey might be left in a state in which it is not able to start and run backups in Wii mode. In those cases you should run updates/config discs in GCOS mode, a.k.a GameCube OS. The disc runs as a gamecube one. Now, you may either burn a disc as a GCOS one, or start a working GCOS disc and, when asked to insert a disc before pressing A, switch the GCOS disc with the one you want to run, then press A and see if it runs that way.
In situations in which the Wiikey is unresponsive, unless it is a physical problem, it all comes down to trying to shake things up so that the Wiikey loads the correct firmware. It's exactly the same process as updating a motherboard or burner firmware.
So regular of GCOS, padded or not, hacked or recover discs, they all add to the available options to successfully update/config/recover the Wiikey. [Also, in the rare instances when a wiikey is having problems loading the firmware, running a recover disc and pulling the plug may move the Wiikey into a functional state]
In the worst cases, when the Wiikey is totally unrensonsive and unable to recognize any disc at all, it is safe to assume a physical defect (soldering imperfections, shorts, etc.).

I havent been able to get it to recognize anything at all. I have burned a number of GCOS, padded, hacked, etc. disks to no avail. I like to think I soldered it properly (although it was my first time doing so), so what can I do?
What do you mean about getting it to load a working GCOS disk and putting a burned one in before pressing A? Do you mean loading a GC game like SSBM and then doing some crazy switchery? How would I go about trying this?
If I were to upload a picture of my soldering handiwork, would someone be able to tell me if I messed it up in some way?
I am really grasping at straws here...
EDIT: It looks like one of my soldering points may be weak. It is one of the ones that is a hole (sorry if that is vague). I was having trouble getting the solder into the hole, so I ended up with a lot on the sides. It seems to have pooled around the edges, instead of linking the two points through the hole. I will re-solder that point and try all the disks again. If it is still not working, I will make a thread.
Thanks for the help.
EDIT2: Well crap. I may have messed everything up. I tried to re-solder the point with a lot of solder from my other EDIT and may have failed completely. Now I am no solder expert, but I dont think this is good. I seemed to have filled the hole with solder. I am not sure if the solder just forms a disc across the top, or if it is actually filled to the brim with solder (I dont think I put that much in). Did I mess up big time?

Take a few close-ups from different angles of your soldering job.
Create a new thread in the Wii forum, I am sure you will get good feedback.

yeah that didnt make much sense to me. Im hoping to do this with a recovery disc.
It seems my wii "locks" up when i put any backups/GCOS discs, config discs, reocovery discs padded/notpadded. By locks up i mean i doubt it after the wii recognizes that the disc inserted is going to need the wiikey's help it does the whole spitting out sphiel. If i dont press eject, I feel that pressing reset, turning it off/on, and unplugging it doesnt do anything to help the wii actually read the disc
This spitting out problem doesnt happen when i put real games in, and also doesnt lock up when i put not-for-the-wii-discs (lol i put in assassins creed and it ejected it fine)

It works!
I did need to re-solder that point.
I loaded the hacked 1.3, turned on region override. And am now burning 1.3 to install and turn region override on with. Then all I need to do is run 1.9b and 1.9g right?

A huge thank you to Alaac1981 who walked me through recovering my Wiikey flash. My problem was exactly like his and nothing worked to recover. He asked for help- see previous page (pg 37) for his post and Cherin replied-Originally posted by cherrin: Try this, boot up your console with the recovery disk in and press "A" when prompted to get to the main menu. Let it set for 5-10 minutes to be sure while doing nothing. The disk will show no signs whatsoever that it is doing anything. After the time has elapsed pull the power cord out of the back of the Wii effectively "hard booting" it. Wait 10 sec. or so and plug it back in(the whole time leaving the recovery disk in the console), get back to the main menu and let it sit there for a couple of minutes. If the GameCube screen pops up in the Game Channel window then it was a success, Otherwise you will have start the whole process over again. Some people have had to do this a few times to get it to take.
I PM'd Alaac1981 and he walked me through what he did. It worked, and I am very thankful to all on this board who try to help us "new fish" on the board.

@ Rafadawn
I was wondering if you could verify the problem with the situation I'm having. I have extensively read many of your stickies, yet I seem to be stuck with one problem: corrupting my Wiikey.
I'll try to be thorough to help guide you through what I've been doing, and why I'm confused with my results. *Note, all my burns were done with Memorex DVD+R disks, with imgburn at 2.4x speed and verified.
Starting fresh, I downloaded, extracted, and burned the image of the Wiikey 1.9b Recover ISO onto a blank disk. I popped it into my Wii, and the Gamecube logo shows up in the top left corner. I click it, then click start, and it goes to a black screen. I leave it alone for 10 minutes (I just watch tv while it runs), and then turn my power off (red light, not standby).
When I turn it back on and go to the menu screen, I eject the Wiikey 1.9b Recover disk out. My Wiikey should now be reset and ready to go. I pop in the Wiikey v1.9g beta fix [US] into the drive. The Gamecube logo shows up in the top left corner. I click it, then click start. The lady's rear end shows up and it starts initializing and stops my drive, and asks me to press A or Reset to continue for Test Flash.
*Note! I am using the Eject Method that you describe in the first post of pg 21 of this thread. Leaving the disk in the drive always results in "Test Failed: Check Connections" message.
Before I start the Test Flash, I eject the disk. I press A to initialize testing. Completes and success at 100%. I put the disk back in, and press A. Goes through again but for real this time, and I eject the disk before pressing A again for firmware update. It updates to 100%, tells me to reset with galaxy. I push Reset on my Wii, hear Homer's voice "You're all Nuts" and it automatically reboots.
Once on the menu screen, I put in the Wiikey v1.2b firmware disk [US] and the Gamecube logo shows up in the top left corner. I click it, then click start. The lady's rear end shows up and it starts intializing and stops my drive, and asks me to press A or Reset to continue for Test Flash.
*Note! For this version, 1.9b firmware, I also use the Eject Method as leaving the disk in the drive always results in "Test Failed: Check Connections" message.
Before I start the Test Flash, I eject the disk. I press A to initialize testing. Completes and success at 100%. I put the disk back in, and press A. Goes through again but for real this time, and I eject the disk before pressing A again for firmware update.
Now, when the update reaches exactly 70%, I pull the plug out of my Wii, and then I pull the two-prong plug out of the socket. I let it sit for 3 minutes while I watch tv. I then plug the cord back into my Wii, and the two-prong plug back into the socket. I press the Power button on the Wii to turn it on. When I go past the black warning screen into the Menu, I put a copy of my backup game into the disk and it reads it.
Obviously, I must be doing something wrong, because my Wiikey should of corrupted from the loss of power during the firmware update. Do you have any idea as to what I should do? Much thanks for your help.

I am trying to get everything to work as it should still.
I can read the 1.9g disc, and install what needs to be installed. Then it says to run Galaxy. I reset (hear Homer) and load Galaxy, but it doesnt want to update. Then I go back to 1.9g and it starts installing again. When it finishes, it says "insert galaxy and reset." I am in a loop because Galaxy doesnt install any updates for me. What do I do?
Also, when I try to run a backup of Pokemon Battle Revolutions, it says it will have to update my wii. It warns that, if I have hardware installed, I may brick it. What do I do?
Wait, nevermind... it is a PAL version. That explains it. Guess I shouldnt install that update!

1) Try ejecting the disc before the Test, then run the test, then uinsert the disc back in for the real update.
2) If that does not work, then you may have a Wiikey clone (Extremely likely).
3) Or you could have a soldering problem. Get a multimeter and test for continuity on each joint.

I'm having troubles with my newly installed WiiKey. I've tried to read up as much as possible but I'm not completely understanding all of what is being said.
So far, I've installed my wii key. I then inserted the firmware 1.9g update. I can play every official game I have at the moment, including a backed up copy of Geometry Wars Galaxy.
The problem comes when I attempt to play my official version of Super Smash Bros Brawl. I get a message saying that It can not recognize the disc.
My Wii us the ntsc(US) version.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Do any of u guys know whcih one to use or any game to use. I have used metroid, SMG, pokemon before. SO I dont think it will work......
THanks guys and im sorry if i hurt anyone.

If you have the WiiKey installed then you will NOT be able to play a Store bought retail copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl. The only way I was able to get it to work was to create a backup of SSBB that I created using details in one of my earlier posts.
