I have not tried the first config disk that people seem to be getting success with just because I was gone all yesterday and that seems to be when this revelation came about but I will do it as soon as I get home and post my results.
At this point, I am VERY confident of my hardware modding skills ( I even tested across the chip's power and ground to ensure it was drawing power) but not confident at all of my disc burning skills. For this reason, I am using SSBB as a negative test disk. If the wiikey is functional in any fashion, SSBB WILL NOT load. If it does, your wiikey is non-functional.
Well, I am very confused at this point. I tried the original config disk and then the padded 1.9b update disk method and it did not do anything. I am now just thinking through the issue logically (have been trying to all along but have narrowed it down now). Here is what I have come up with as possible solutions/courses of action:
1) I have established that the power and ground show something like 3.225 volts when tested across. After thinking about this however, that does not mean the chip is drawing that power, it just means that the DVD board it is soldered to can indeed provide that power from the two points I have soldered to. I would get a better and more definitive result from testing across the data points. I am a bit nervous to test across them because I am afraid I would bridge the connections with the multimeter probes but if it must be done to find out what is happening, so be it.
2) My wiikey came with a hologram in the package. I bought it from foundmy.com after I saw someone on another afterdawn forum post about it. It looks real. I have taken multiple pics of the chip. After the reinstal, I took another pic and posted it here in the forum a few pages back. Someone feel free to check and tell me otherwise.
3) I have put a multimeter to the six solder points on the chip and tested continuity. all check out.
All this leads me to suspect the chip itself. This is at a last resort, as I can come up with no other explanations. It seems pretty hard to believe that I bought the chip bricked. If I did, the above process should have taken care of it. If not, SSBB retail WILL NOT LOAD.
This is a true mystery. I actually work as a software tester in Seattle so I am both upset AND embarrassed that I can't get this chip working. I will try anything. Does anyone know what the voltage traveling across the data points of the Wiikey is? Would like to know as much as I can before moving forward.

So far, I've installed my wii key. I then inserted the firmware 1.9g update. I can play every official game I have at the moment, including a backed up copy of Geometry Wars Galaxy.
The problem comes when I attempt to play my official version of Super Smash Bros Brawl. I get a message saying that It can not recognize the disc.
My Wii us the ntsc(US) version.
If you have the WiiKey installed then you will NOT be able to play a Store bought retail copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl. The only way I was able to get it to work was to create a backup of SSBB that I created using details in one of my earlier posts.
Okay, Me and my Dad are going to rig up an on/off switch for the wii key.

@ rafadawn
Thanks for the reply. I tried method 1) that you mentioned and it didn't work. More importantly though, if you can take a look at this picture of the chip installed on my Wii.
Chip
If Wiikey clones physically look like real Wiikeys, but are different in the fact that they aren't upgradable using firmware updates, then I'm gonna save everyone a lot of trouble and just assume that I have a clone.
I came to this conclusion because I tried something unordinary. First, I tried your method 1) listed below. It didn't work. So what I did just to see what would happen was that I tried the method again, the first time with v1.9g beta fix [US]. I ejected the disc before the Test, and then let it run the test at 100%. But after that, I put in the v1.2b firmware fix [US] instead, and it still read it and stopped the drive normally....and continued to update for real. So really, my Wiikey isn't even checking for the right firmware data, and I'm just gonna assume that it's not even being affected by the process at all.
It's sad to come to this conclusion but it had a good run so I'm not gonna complain. I just wanted to know if you know of any methods that could possibly just corrupt my clone wiikey altogether? or if soldering a flick switch to the chip would work? I can't really see myself keeping this modchip functional for too much longer, as the reason I got the Wii was for Brawl itself. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks rafadawn.
Originally posted by rafadawn: 1) Try ejecting the disc before the Test, then run the test, then uinsert the disc back in for the real update.
2) If that does not work, then you may have a Wiikey clone (Extremely likely).
3) Or you could have a soldering problem. Get a multimeter and test for continuity on each joint.

Got a brand new Official Wiikey in last week, and can't use it because I have a D2C chipset in my Wii. I have not got a response from the Mod chip web site I bought it from, so that I might be able to return it. Anyone have any Ideas on where I can sale my Wiikey? Maybe Ebay or some place like that?

ok I guess I have successfully upgraded my WiiKey last night...
just wanna share my setup.
Original
NTSC Wii @ 3.0U
Real WiiKey @ 1.2
I have no GameCube controller
So, I downloaded the 1.9BootUSA.zip from page 1. Burn that into a Verbatim DVD.
Insert the DVD into my Wii, it recognized it as a GameCube disc. So I run it.
Shows background of a nice bud .... it does its testing to 100% ... then I press "reset" for it to do the real update.
then it update to 100% .. shows the word "reset galaxy" ..... first I don't know what to do.. then anyways.. I press reset and I hear Homer's voice and the Wii reboot itself.
Then I go online and update my Wii from 3.0U to 3.2U
Now my Wii is 3.2U w/ 1.9g WiiKey.
All NTSC-J and NTSC-US backup works.
Have yet to test SMG and SSBB tonight.
but the process is very smooth.
Thank you all.

Wow this is pathetic, i got scammed by some chinese boot leg store. The people there installed wii key on my wii and recently i've been into a series of updating its firmware, and i found out that the updates dont seem to work but are able to be ran through.
My question is: Should i buy and install a REAL wii key or should i stay with my wii key clone? Which one should i choose in the long run?

Wow those Clones looks incredibly good... I mean.. The main difference really is the top of the chip on some of them and the color of the actual board... Very tough unless you know what to look for..

hey guys, wondering if you can help me.
i have tried dumping, burning, and playing ssbb (ntsc-u) on my australian pal wii with a wiikey installed with no apparent success. I have a 8164b lg drive. my wii is running on 3.2e
i successfully dumped my original version of the game with friidump and it was the correct size (8,5....whatever the exact number should be).
i tried burning it with imgburn, the disc was a success, but it did not work on my wii. i tried several methods stated on this site using verbatim d/l discs aswell, still to no success.
then... it tried the 1.9b 70% thing, and the original did not work. then i tried to recover it with the 1.9b recovery disc and it does not seem to work. i now cant play any backed up games at all on my wii, but i can play originals.
i had 1.9g update installed prior to trying the 1.9b thing and i think this may be the problem. is this correct?
how can i get my wii (1st of all) to run my backed up games again, and secondly (most importantly) to run brawl. ive tried so hard :(

i ran across alot of people having problems with their wiikey after installing 1.9g. now my question is would it be a good idea to downgrade to 1.9b since i heard that this was their last non beta firmware? and since they have trucha signer now to edit smg for the error 001 there is really no need for the 1.9g. now me i haven't had a problem yet but i don't want to have one either. any thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated. thanks

rafadawn replied:
"I have dealt with and reasearched the 1.9g problem for a while now. in reality, the 1.9g update is as stable as any, however, hpysical problems with the chip itself and/or its installation, or firmware corrution during the burning/update process seem to be the cause of all the problems reported. Keep in mind that the number of problems reported is miniscule in comparison to the number of Wiikeys sold.
Now, as you stated, if you can play SMG and SSBB at 1.9b then there is no need to be at 1.9g. Even thoug, as I said, 1.9g has demonstrated to be able to handle any new games backup so far."
thanks for all the help rafadawn

Connection Failed error:
1) You could have a Wiikey clone that does not accept the 1.9g update.
2) There could be a soldering problem with you chip
3) Try using all sorts of different Wiikey update files (possibly from different source on the Web .. not just this thread). Also use them is different configurations: regular, GCOS, padded, not-padded, etc..
Strangely enough, it seems that different Wii's prefer different files or burning methods [IMHO, it has to do with the drive's optics]
I understand that solution #3 requires using several blank DVDs and may lead nowhere, but what is the alternative?!?!

Firstly, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone on here and for all the information. With all the info that was available, I felt I was more than prepared to tackly this job myself. Though now it's all said and done, I am running into a problem and was hoping for some input. Here is my info:
1. NTSC Wii 3.2U
2. WiiKey (Not a clone, verified)
Now I don't consider myself a beginner solderer, but it has been awhile since I have soldered anything. Though I feel my soldering job was done very well, and I received no resistance when testing from the board to the chip on each point. I first used the Long Wire method, and then went back and did the short wire method after I had problems the first time. Retested point, and still no resistance. So I believe my soldering job to be fine. Here is my problem:
1. After everything is installed and tested and put back together.
A) The first thing I noticed is that my Power light is now red
instead of orange. Not sure if this is a problem or an
indication of anything?
B) Tested my original games and they still work fine.
C) Using Verbatim DVD-R's, Nero and ImageBurn at 2X, I made the:
1) 1.9b Recovery Disc
2) 1.9b Firmware Update Disc
3) 1.9g Beta Firmware Update Disc
4) 1.9g Firmware Update Disc
5) 1.3 Config Disc
I have done the Padded, File Chopped and Hacked versions of all
that apply.
D) When looking at the ISO on my computer, it says that it's
1.35GB. However, after the burn is complete, the "Used" size of
the disc only says between 36MB and 39MB. Yet when I look at the
back of the disc, more than 1/2 of the disc was burned, making
it look like it did indeed burn 1.35GB.
E) However, none of the discs work in my Wii. It will just not
recognize the disc. I have used Nero and ImageBurn, at 2x and 4x
and it will not recognize any of the discs.
So here's my question. After I burn the ISO (1.35GB) to the disc, should the disc not read in my computer that it is indeed 1.35GB, or because it is only showing 36-39MB, have I done something wrong? I planned on going out later to get some Memorex or other brand -R DVD's to see if they made a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

In this thread, even just the last 4 or 5 pages, you will find all sorts of tips about things to try when the Wiikey is unresponsive.
However, I Just would like to point out that, the fact that you had problems with both the long and short wire install, may point to a defective chip.
[The light goes RED if you turn off your Wii using the power button on the console, it goes ORANGE when you turn it off using your wiimote]

Ok, so
1. Does it sound like I have burned the config disk and the update disk correctly?
2. If I put in Retail SSBB and it dosen't play, then the Wiikey is working even though I haven't done the 1.9g update?
Thanks for the help.

Just to clear up a small, really unimportant question.
The red light on the Wii means that it is completely powered down. The orange light means that the Wii is powered off but it is still available to receive updates such as news and weather. connect24 has to be enabled to do this.

i feel REEAAALLLYYY stupid for asking this, but
is it ABSOLUTELY imperative that i used DVD minuses (-) Rs for recovery discs? I have been using pluses(+) this whole time. I mean before i had this problem, all my config/update/backups were on pluses (+) and they worked fine. I'd go get a pack of minueses but everythings closed and the nearest 24h walmart is not worth the drive
Oh and ace2484,
No, not to my knowledge. I beleive that you have to choose one of the chips out there to play backups. Although ive had problems with the wiikey before, I still stand by it because of the great support of the <del>WiiKey Team</del> the friendly folks of Afterdawn

DVD-R discs were reccommended by the Wiikey team and they seem to work in the majority of cases. However, as you have seen, DVD+ work as well, even though there are always people who sooner or later will have to switch from DVD+ to DVD-, at least for the update/config discs.

1) Yes. (Even though you may want to try different burning speeds to find your burner's sweet spot: e.g. 4x and a few burners even prefer 8x)
2) In theory yes, even though, as you know, several un-modded wiis are experiencing problems with SSBB. In general, the best test of wiikey functionality, is to use a GCOS disc and see if the Gamecube icon shows up in the Disc Channel.
