Basically if originals work and your backups don't and you can't update the wiikey then the problem is the wiikey. Probably broke or loose.

Is there any use to try the Hexed Config key? That is something I have not tried.

Any signs of life from the Wiikey?
Does the Disc Channel show anything at all? Do you see the GameCube logo when you insert a GCOS disc?

Disc Channel not reflecting anything except for the animated spinning of disc. No GameCube logo.
Do you mean to say if I burn the 1.9b recovery disc as a GCOS disc, it should show the GameCube logo, and that is a 1st indication the recovery disc is working?

quick question about Wii firmware issue can anyone help me ... have a Wii updated to 3.2J ... inserting a US game with 3.2U update will it semi-brick my JP Wii?
Does the US update overwrite the current newest JP firmware? Thanks

In theory it should not ... however, the risk is there..
Check the compatibility list for Jap Wii here.

Thanks needed that!!! Do you know if the site is quite accurate though? Since i'm still trying to figure out how to make my JP Wii able to run SSBB "Wiizard" flawlessly. And it sounds like WBB + layer break will just do the trick.

To add on, I had successfully updated to 1.9g in the past before it started to not read any backups approx 2 weeks later. :(

I have a question. Is there a way to run the config discs on 3.2J firmware? I do not have gamecube controllers. If there is a way, can you post it? Thanks in advance.

You don't need a gamecube controller - you use the reset button to switch options, holding it in to select. This is mentioned in the instructions.

Has anybody updated to 1.9s and tried using an existing config disk? The new config isn't out yet and I don't wanna update in case it turns region override off and I can't keep playing PES 2008. :P ...I'll wait if I have to - just curious cos older configs worked with 1.9g.

I wonder what dev mode does.... I'm just speculating, but isn't dev normally short for developer?
Has anyone actually tried 1.9s yet? I think I will wait for a bit to see if there are any problems with it like 1.9g had....
I can't wait!!!!

Are you sure? Some people say that I need GCOS config discs?

Originally posted by rafadawn: Usually when the Wiikey stops reading backups and the Wii doesn't even recognize GCOS discs (no GC logo in the disc channel), then either the soldering broke/went bad somewhere or the Wiikey is dead.
The following is a typical experience in this case from somebody in the same situation:
Quote: Well, i opened up the wii and all my contacts visually seemed fine. I checked continuity from the wiikey chip to the panasonic chip on the wii board. The connection between the first pin of the actual wiikey and the 8th pin of the panasonic chip never dropped to zero as it had with the others. Definitely went close to zero, but definitely different from the other contacts. Soldering braid in hand i took of all the solder at the 6th contact, and reflowed new solder. Works fine now. Contact looked fine before hand, and resistance almost dropped to zero ohms, but i guess a little flux mix in my solder was enough to increase resistance and caused the chip to stop working. So.... hopefully this will help someone else. Resistance from chip to chip should be zero for all four contacts, a little resistance is enough to keep the chip from working properly.
As you can see even a slight continuity problem between two joints can cause the problem.
After reading your advice we got the wii checked out,
and the problem WAS the soldering.
It plays back-ups fine again now.
And we also found out that our Wiikey was a clone
and not an original.
Thanks for the help :)
