The real only "blocks" were a result of people acquiring games out of their region (example: you are in the US and acquire a game from Japan). If you took the update included with the game you may "brick" your Wii.
I personally only take updates if they are included with a game.

Hey guys I was wondering if this DVD drive is good for burning wii games, since I am thinking of buying it. Also, I was wondering if these drives only read the discs, and than I need another burner to write the wii data onto a DVD-R. My last question is if this DVD drive will work on my computer since its a Windows XP Home edition Version 2002, Dell dimension DIM4700.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Here is the DVD drive I am thinking of buying:

If you can trust the following information that the seller has in the description, it should work. It appears to be a 're-badged' LG according to the model #.
Description 16x IDE GDR-8163B
This drive is only a DVD-ROM - it will only read.
You need a seperate DVD burner to write with.
Looks like your dell has 1 IDE connector. HERE. So the drive will work, however depending on your current computer configuration, you may have some additional re-configuring to do.

If you try to play a non-burned PAL game on a non-chiped NTSC Wii, than will it still get bricked. For example, the real Super Paper Mario PAL edition on a non-chipped NTSC Wii.

Only if there is an update for the Wii on the disk. If you are at a later version (Super Mario Galaxies) it should not ask you to update your Wii.

So how do you prevent your wii from getting bricked if you want to play burned games and have a NTSC type Wii that has a wiikey?

When you put in a game, if an update is needed, make sure the game is NTSC, and not PAL before you allow the Wii to update.

So basicly if I have a NTSC Wii, and only burn games that I get from the U.S. than my wii cant get bricked for any game. Even for super paper mario since I heared that one could brick your Wii.

Correct.
The problem game is Super Mario Galaxies. You may need a modchip update to play the game. The game includes a Wii update. I took the Wii update, and was still able to play any of my previous backups. I did not try SMG, as I do not think the game is going to play until I get an update for my modchip.

Been trying to use Raw Dump 2.0 to dump some GC games and I keep getting a Unhandled exception error about buffer overflow. I tried the suggestions of using PIO mode for transfers in my Primary IDE Channel. Also tried booting in safe mode and tried cleaning the discs and nothing works any other suggestions i am using .NET 2.0 and have a GDR8164B DVD ROM drive.

Hello everyone. I am having a hard time. I had a wiibee chip installed but none of my backups worked. so I ordered and installed a wiikey. the only update i used was 1.9g. this only allowed me to play the super mario galaxy backup. i burned this backup on the same type of dvd and same speed as the others. (maxxel dvd+r at 4x)
do i need another update to make the games not come up with errors?
also do i need to buy some other type of dvd?
please help me. i have searched everywhere i can find on the internet and nothing pans out. i don't know what the problem.

Also heard trying turning the drive upside down to see if that would work and got the same error message.
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Has anyone ever ACTUALLY gotten a successful dump with a GDR-8160b? People have mentioned that rawdump recognizes wii discs in this drive, but for one cannot complete the dump using my 8160. It is also not working with friidump. I have tried in a few computers with no luck. I have tried the PIO only trick AND I have tried every version of RawDump that I could get my hands on. I only got this model drive because there are several mentions of this drive working and being the best value. Can someone help, please?

Is .net 2.0 install on the Vista OS? When I try to install it, it says that .Net2.0 is already install with the operating system.
Does anybody have a link where I can buy the LG 8164b DVD drive?

.Net 2.0 is in Vista....no need to install seperately.
As newegg is sold out, I think I saw some on Ebay.

I am having the same problem as Davett. I am using an 8160, and I have tried changing to PIO and I tried many versions of Rawdump. I have NET Framework version 2.0.

I also found that a few other GDR- products works. I bought the USB version for the laptop on ebay GDR-8082N and it did a perfect RawDump.
