Well, my system was back up and fully operational, but it YLODd again. However, it ran for a good few hours at first, then went. Then I waited till this morning and it turned on again, and ran for about a minute. Now 2 more times at about 30 seconds. It's going off as if it's overheating, but the fan isn't speeding up. So I don't think it's the CPUs. I know the fan is working properly because when it was running, it was running very well. I'm sick of messing with it so I think I'll just bite the bullet and send it in. Unless there is an easy fix to this problem that you guys know of.

I have a 40gig and had the lovely YLOD...and of course it is out of warranty and no way am I paying Sony. I did a reflow and it worked just fine except my controllers would not connect unless plugged into the usb and I had no wifi...not sure if ethernet cable would work, I do not have a cord long enough. So I assumed I did something wrong, opened it back up and saw that the ribbon for the wifi card was not in correctly. So I plugged it in all the way, but now I have no video or audio. I tried the reset by holding the power button until the three beeps, turning the switch of on the back, turning it on, I attempted many times. Any suggestions???

the smoke would have been the flux burning away
as for the fuse probably not
i cant tell you where the fuses are because there are so many of them!
look for little green resistor like components or actual resistors that have a 0 on them ie 0 ohm resistor!

I hope I havnt fried it. I used a heat gun at a temperature of roughly 350celcius maybe a little higher and followed the instructions properly. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

got the ylod not on wednesday but i signed up for continuous play last month rang up thursday getting another one 2moz only thing that's pissed me off is that my copy of infamous was inside it and it can take up to 6 weeks to get it back. there's no way i would attempt to fix it myself. just wondering when my mates broke he payed £145 to get it fixed reading most of the posts on here surely some of you have spent more than that. anyway i'm getting a refurbished one whats the chances of them breaking down sony said all the parts are brand new i don't think they are but was just wondering.

Mine cost me about £5 in all for thermal paste. That was months ago and still going strong. Even with a refurbished machine they can still go wrong. One of my mates is on continuous play and pays a small amount once a month. Whereas I paid a small amount once.
His Little Big Planet that was stuck inside and took 3 months and many phonecalls to Sony to get back.

If you haven't got a receipt it's very doubtful that Sony would repair it for free.

I have a new problem guys. I reflowed my system last night and did a pretty thorough job this time. I used a higher heat, flux, bent the clamps, used spring washers with the clamps, pretty much everything I could think of that I thought would help. My PS3 didn't turn on. No red light at all.

I checked the little ribbon that connects to the chip with the power/eject buttons and sure enough it was busted. I bought a new one tonight but the PS3 still won't boot up. When I flick the switch at the back of the unit there is an approximate 4 second delay before the red light turns on (I couldn't see this last night because of the busted ribbon). The power and eject buttons have no effect and of course my controller is no longer synced to the console thanks to the reflow. I have played around with the ribbon a fair bit but the result is consistent.

Is this symptom typical of anything I can fix? My worries are that I may have fried something during the reflow. Does 500C for 20 seconds on each of the four sections sound like too much? 15 seconds was fine last time round. Could I have busted the PSU somehow even though it was working fine before the YLoD?

I'm completely stumped on this one.

hi,

You were right Colin, on closer inspection the small power ribbon had split so I cut off the split end and it worked a treat, so thanks! Trouble is, I'm now stuck with a ylod ps3. I tried reflowing the board three times and even put the temp up to 400c but still no luck. I didn't use any flux and I think I may have slightly melted one of those small black chips (what a t''t) so I don't know if it's o'k.Is it possible to get those small black chips? and has Anyone got any suggestions on the reflowing of the board?

As allways I appreciate your help

your best bet its to try fluxing the bga's then do one last reflow @400 degrees Celsius and for an extra 10 seconds.
also bend the two clamps that hold the fan assembly to the bga's.

and if you haven't damaged the ic's to badly it may work!
if not your screwed!!!!!!!! replace the mother board but don't forget if you do that it will ask you to format the hard drive when you power it up for the first time!

Hi

Where is the best place to get the flux and what do I need exactly? If I do have to get another motherboard will it need a matching blu-ray control board for the disk drive? There is one for sale on ebay that is ylod and I'm not sure if I should take a chance and buy it. I think I would do a better job if I had another one!

Thanks

Well I still have not figured out why I have no audio or video output. But i realized today that when I turn on my ps3 that the fan is not coming on either. It will accept a disk and eject a disk, but I get nothing else. Unless I leave it unplugged for a day or two then I get just a black screen and still no fans. I opened it and the fans are connected. Is there a possibility I killed the mother board? Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi, people first i would love to thank Gilsky for doing such a wonderful thing like uploading videos and a PDF file on how to fix YLOD.
MY PS3 YLODed and after 3 days(had to get the materials heat gun etc) its been taking a beating hours on end and running better than refufrbished or new.
Anyway, i used 300degcelcius on the gpu and cpu for about 30secs on the back side and after cooling, i gave another dose of 300 to the otherside of the motherboard for about a minute or so on the cpu and gpu and HEATED the rest of the motherboard in a circular motion for about the same time spending roughly 3minutes..... results: PS3 runs better than new... so try at your own risk.
Much thanks to GILSKY

there the two clamps that are on the opposite side to the heatsink/fan assembly.
they have two srews in each an bolt through the board into the fan assembly.
bend them so that when you screw them down they apply more pull preasure on those bga's
come people have also added washers on the screws before fitting them to do the same job!

Well, I've fixed 2. An older 80gb b/c ps3 and a 40gb ps3. I thought I would add my thoughts to the thread just out of respect to the efforts others are making to help. I'm also buying a 3rd for a friend for $100 and looking to hopefully make this a little more permanent.

Both lasted 1 month almost to the day and both quit within a day or 2 of each other, maybe 20-30hrs of use.

I already re-flowed both again and things are going fine for now. Probably 20-30hr's at least on the 40gb in the last 2 weeks with no issues.

I'm anticipating the return, and will probably grab some flux for the 3rd time through, just because. I'm not sure about bending the clamps I think the heat will weaken the metal anyhow. Like some have mentioned adding washers outside the clamp and below the screw head seems like it would help, so I will probably add that step in.

1 thing that made the difference on a particularly troublesome 360 was adding a shim between the heat shield and heatsink, which would reduce cooling a bit, but the added pressure might be more useful.

I'm no expert, but because the reflow works, it seems pretty clear it's the same problem as the 360 with solder points cracking from heating/cooling/flexing. I think if we can find the right amount of even pressure like the x-clamp fixes on the 360 it should sort it out.

The last thing I wanted to mention is more of a warning... I have a heatgun without the temperature display. I have 2 settings. First reflow I played it safe and used low, the board didn't seem to deform and when cooling it was pretty much silent. The second time I put it on high, I'm careful to make sure it's completely flat when I do the reflow, but the boards warped significantly, bowing up from the heat. You can't tell from looking down at the board but have a look from table top level and the center where the chips are was almost 1/2" higher than the edge's!! It did reform to completely flat as it cooled... however I wouldn't over-do the heat, at least keep that in mind.

Possibly riggin something up to force the board to stay completely flat and unable to bow from heat while reflowing and cooling might help the process as well.

Im thinking your using too much thermal paste on the heatsinks. I had my first couple machines present with this problem after a reflow and the thermal paste was the problem. Also worth mentioning you might want to try adding a couple thin washers to the clamp bolts to snug up the heatsinks and allow for better heat transmission.

Something i noticed was that i always leave my ps3 on all the time.
The first time i did a reflow it was working fine for two weeks.

Then i needed to move the ps3 so i shut it down and turned it off at the back when i put it back i never turned it on until next day it only lasted a few mins and got YLOD........MMMMMMMM interesting i thought.

So i reflow again and left it on for two weeks then turned it off at night and when i turned it on next day BAM YLOD.

So reflowed again and it has now been on 4 weeks and i aint turning it off lol.

Do you think because it is left on it keeps it all at even temp and because i dont shut it down it doesn"t have a chance to cool thus move bend or whatever to the motherboard of cpu etc.
Would like to hear your guys thoughts on this
