hello
my name is GILKSY not glitsky
and yes there are instances where the power supply is the cause of the ylod!
faulty power supplys run hotter than normal and this increases the workload of the fan and speeds up the ylod process!
i to am waiting for a donated console before i film a fluxing video also clamp bending and washer fitting!
but at the mo i keep loosing out to those auto bidders and noone seems to want to hand there consoles over for r and d perposes!
also i'd like to film a reball of the bga's but untill i get that console you'll all have to wait sorry!!!!
colinjest aka gilksy G'day Gilksy, just wanted to send you a massive thank you from down under here in Australia. My teenage son's 40GB PS3 died from the dreaded YLOD about a week ago after only 18 months of use. After many hours of trawling the net and many wasted phone calls to Sony, I stumbled across your PDF and videos.
Being somewhat experienced with PC's (I build my own as a hobby) I bought a heat gun and some thermal paste and had a go at pulling apart & fixing my son's PS3. (I refused to pay Sony the $315 AUS they demanded to fix it....corporate thieves)
I am happy to report that I followed your guide and vid's to the letter and the system works perfectly and is still fully operational after 3 days and approx 15hrs later. My son even commented that the fan is much quieter now than before.
There are some noticeable differences between the model you used on the videos, particularly the ability to separate the fan/heatsink/HDD bay assembly, but still managed to get it done & my son is over the moon. He said it was like losing a member of the family.....LOL
Once again many thanks and loads of good karma for you!!!

If anyone has any information on how to know if a power pack is faulty then I would also appreciate the support and co-operation.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have also encountered this, on the 60gb and early 40gb models
I bought the new intercooler TS "its a bit LOUD" but has stopped it from YLOD after rework.
My rework consists of the following.
BGA flux the piss yellow stuff, This is the best for rework,
you need to let this flow under the two BGA's,
Hi,
Thanks for the advice..
Couple of questions on "no clean liquid flux":
1) I've tried to apply the liquid flux to the underside of the 2 big chips, however I can't seem to get much underneath, maybe 5ML. Whats the best way to apply the darn stuff?
2) I purchased some from maplin, but it's quite expensive and therefore need a cheaper supplier. Do you have a link for a UK company that sells the correct flux?
Thanks in advance

You are all trying too hard.....this is a simple fix....the system overheats causing thermal compound to loose cooling properties....
if u get the YLOD you dont HAVE to do anything but take it apart and put it back together< as long as you remove the battery on the board and the power supply then reconnect then the system will start right back up...sony has these things wired to make money. they yellow light sand intentionaly wont come back on because thats what sony wants them to do...remove the source of temp memory and it doesnt know that it isnt supposed to turn back on...but from the initial overheating the thermal compound no longer helps disperse heat so replace it with some artic silver 5 and if needed reflow it...fixed mine the first time with cheap thermal compound and it ran perfectly for over 2 months....
Took her apart and replaced cheap paste and reflowed (just in case) this past saturday and to test my theory i have left this system on continuoulsy since....it is now wednsday and i have not herd the fan hit high a single time and the air that comes out the back is not very warm at all. It has been on for 4 days straight and nothing....i have been playing, watching movies, internet, and just leaving it idle...all i done was heat gun at 700F on each side for about 30sec(CHIP SIDE FIRST) and put the good thermal paste on and thats it...
When you guys talk about reflowing at 1000F for 2 min and addding all this flux and stuff all your doing is taking a very high risk of frying your system and turning it into a paper weight. my email is dayday3000@comcast.net and if you need help fixing your system just let me know. Like i said, its such a simple fix that everybody is making it hard so they think it will work better....sometimes simple is best....

WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS!!!
you just got lucky the first time
when your system ylods it actually creates dry joints/cracked joints under the bga's
this is due to the fact that all electronics are now being soldered with lead free solder......this solder has silver in it instead of lead and due to the properties of silver its harder than lead therefore is more likly to under stress fracture!!!!!!!!!
and thats a fact!!!!!!!!

Hi,
Sorry to be a pain. However, back to correctly and efficiently applying that darn liquid flux to the two big chips:
What is the best method of applying the flux successfully? I?ve tried a few times to different boards, but I?m still not able to seem to get a sufficient amount actually underneath the chips. The best I?ve managed yet was about 5ML and I don?t assume that was sufficient. Maybe I?m being a bit too concerned regarding this part of the repair procedure, but I feel it is quite important.
I greatly appreciate anyone?s positive co-operation and support.
Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I have a new and fun YLOD related problem here, hoping someone can shed some light on it.
Ok, I picked up a 40gb system this afternoon but it doesnt have the standard YLOD. This one instead immediately boots to a flashing red light. And when I say immediately I mean, the second you turn on the power switch on the back it beeps 3 times and starts flashing red, dont even have to push the power button on the front. (Which btw, seems to do nothing at all)
So far I have tried the standard ylod fix, and pulling the hard drive, bluray drive ect but no love. Im thinking it could possibly be the power supply but atm I dont have another to test with.
Any thoughts/experiences are appreciated!

I forgot to mention, this is a newer 40gb model (The one with the dual eye laser and plastic bottom power supply. Not sure if it makes a difference, but thought I'd add it anyways.

after trying the ts cooler fan after playing a while the ps3 shuts off during a game I can switch the ps3 on again as normal it does not ylod but i think the new fans helps in the cooling problem and prevents the ps3 from overheating but switches off instead going to try the flux if this keeps happening

hi,
ive been stalking this thread for a while now and i was wondering what yall think of my idea, when i have taken apart a few ps3s i have noticed that the cpu and gpu only made contact with about 75% of the heat sink
i have seen people say bend the heat sink straps for more pressure on them, but what do you think of bending just one side of the strap so it will put more pressure on the side of the heat sink that wont make full contact with the bga....any input would be great(gilksy ;))
just me

thanks to all in advane

thanks for the offer
i would cover the postage
but when i say donate a mean just that!
not lend untill its repaired!
i would reball it and prove that it worked whilst videoing it then i would experiment with a few mods i have in mind!!!!
basically your ps3 wouldn't be usable or sale able after ive finished thats why i would only be comfortable doing these experiments on a console that i own!
sooooo
if you would like to perminatly donate it to me then lets do it!
choice is yours my friend!
