Looked for the Sony DRU830A and here's what I found. It does have the mediatek chipset so it has the same maker of chipset as the LITE-ON but it indicates the OEM is Toshiba-Samsung. Anyway here's the link.
....gm
btw I have a Samsung SH-S182D and it has the mediatek chipset it that helps at all. It's an OEM Samsung too. ;-)

cincyrob & greensman, Thanks, I'm thinking about buying another burner and am trying to decide which. Mine are all old but are still doing excellent back-ups with the 8x media. Thanks for the help.

yeah the Plextor is the way to go either the PX-716AL slot drive or the newer model PX-760A are the ones to get

Mediatek apparently isn't the chipset it once was. Doesn't even look like their capable of bitsetting anymore. I definately don't want a toshiba-samsung dvdrw drive. I don't know what to recommend if mediatek chipsets are going down the tubes. I know I don't want a pioneer either.
May have to try a NEC one of these days. The genuine plextors are scarce and hard to find and I don't want a rebadged plextor. I've got connections and think I know where to get another benq DW1650 if need be.
I might even consider trying to find a 16x litey on ebay. Thank goodness I'm not in the market for a new dvdrw drive. Not much out there right now.

Mort81,
How come you don't want a Pioneer? I think that NEC makes the chipset for them and they seem to be pretty good drives. Well at least in my limited experience. LOL. Looking forward to your response as you know your stuff. ;-)
.....gm
QUESTION for all that use TY's.
How has the TYG03 been doing for ya'll? I have 100+ in stock and they seem to be doing ok with some of the newer f/w updates. Maybe I've just purchased some of the newer batches. ;-)
And how bout the YUDEN T03's, I haven't even tried those yet but was wondering how they were as quality backup media???
TIA for your answers............

greensman,
I'm just not a pioneer dvdrw drive fanboy. Pioneer is affiliated with and one of the developers of the dash r format and as you know plus r is the only format I use.
If a drive doesn't come bitset ready, I don't want anything to do with it. Just a pet peeve I guess. I hear the new NEC's come bitset ready now for not only DVD9 media but DVD5 media also. I could be wrong. Actually I would probably try a LG before a NEC. If I had to buy a drive now I would probably pay more money and scrounge up a plextor PX-716.

Yeh I've been thinking about the Plextor for some time now. I have some quality drives but the PX-716A is a good'un as you well know. Thanks for the response buddy.

@greensman....finally got the 112 to accept tdb buffalo patched 8.06....had it connected on its own ide channel, ensured dma was enabled, aspi ok etc.Still wont burn a dvd or cd.Same goes for the 111 but thats still with the latest pioneer f/w.I really cant believe that these drives wont play ball with a ty.Mind you it didnt want to know with a verb dl either.I tried to burn an audio cd with Nero when it spat it out quoting "1:48:46 #136 CDR -1024 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
Communication failure"
So im not going to communicate with the bag of shyte anymore in the bin it goes, and ill get me another lg!!!

Dude that really stinks. Can you get a refund on your drive? I don't know where you bought it but they should take a return. If they will I would flash it back to the original f/w and get my $$$ back.....;-)

@Mort81,
In case you need some Verb's from BB they have them for $12.99/50 pack. ;-)
~You tryin to talk kivory out of a BENNY? hehehe. Good luck with that. hahaha.
@bigwill68,
Nice new sig, does it have more than one meaning. LOL.
~Yeh the TYG02's are good stuff for DVD-R's. Haven't had a single problem with them. :)
@pieman,
Let us know which LG you get. Mort81 has already mentioned that NEC and LG are about all that's left besides the Plexy's. I guess we may all have to cough up the $$$ and get a Plexy. LOL.

bigwill68, edit your sig to conform to forum specs ASAP.
2. An image-only signature should be less than 50kb in size, and be at most 500 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall.
4. If you want to use both text and image in your signature the image should not be more than 500 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall, and you can use up to three lines of text.

@greensman....update on my 112 saga is.....finally got the bugger to burn a disc BUT only when it was the only drive on my ide channel.I only have one ide channel for two drives as my board is a gigabyte d4.Put another drive on the channel and back to no burn.Ive swapped the master/slave to slave/master etc but no way will it burn unless its on its own.Have checked the media compliance for ty's on the 1.09 firmware and they are supported.I cant return the unit as its stuck with the buffalo 8.06.Tried to reflash to original 1.09, but now my firmware shows as 0000!!!!I kept a Nero log of my failed burn if you need to see it.I cant think of anything else to do!!

@pieman,
WOW!! Sorry you had these problems. I feel lucky again that I didn't have the same problems. If you can't tell I did buy one of the Pioneer DVR-112D's. I then flashed it to the Buffalo 8.06 f/w version for the DVR-112L and it works like a champ. I had the same luck with a Litey LH-18A1P. As I've said before cincyrob had the same luck as you but with the LH-18A1P. My heart goes out to you both for I wouldn't wish that kind of luck on my enemy. ;-)
So you have gone to an LG. Good luck then. Which model did you chose. We have the GSA H22N and GSA H42N here in the states that I've been checking out since all these problems have arisen from reputable sources here at AD.
Again GOOD LUCK and keep us informed of your troubles or successes as you go along.

Those Sony SD21s won't be TYs to my understanding. Sony has no 16X TYs according to Doc.

actually, i would suggest AGAINST ordering 16x DVD+R TYs rob, given that your 18x drive is taiwanese manufactured i can only assume that the japanese TYs MID is not mature enough to be included in the firmware tables for your drive. while i have had decent success with the YUDEN000T03s in my Benqs, it is far from being my "best" media of choice at this point...i still conclude, at least for ME and my various setups, the 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s are the "king of the hill" :)
oh, hi everyone...guess who? lol
i was bored so i figured i would drop by my thread to say hello to everyone and to thank all of those that have kept my thread going for so long...i appreciate all your contributions :)
