Dang you cincyrob, dang you. Now I'm gonna have to go by my least favorite store and see if I can buy some of those Sony MIJ's. Did you buy them out or leave some for your buddy bigwill68?? You could buy some and send them to your friends for early Christmas gifts. LOL.
Anyway great deal on the YUDEN T02's. Happy burning and give us a report on those Sony's, like we need one. :)

first of all im kinda new in this dvd-manufacturer "i-use-only-xy-brand" business :)
i've bought a 25pack of tdk DVD-R 2days ago i was wondering on the price but i bought them cause most of my tdk dvds still working without problem. i wanted to select 8x speed i found only 4x allowed. until this pack i got only "TTH02" type but this time i got my first pack of "CMC MAG. AM3". i got some errors in my face that my writer dont have strategy for write this type of dvds and i should use verify disc etc o.O
i was kinda scared so today i've bought a 25pack of verbatim (made in japan..i asked for taiyo yuden stuff after i read this forum ;P) dvds i tought that these will be the best stuff i tested them in dvd identifier and my face wnet from :) to :(
16x certified this is what written on the disc but in Nero i still only able to select 4x speed :(
this is what i get from dvd identifier:
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:TYG03]
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [TYG03]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
and for the drive capabilities on this disc i got these:
** INFO : GET PERFORMANCE Write Speed Descriptor(s)
Descriptor #1 = 5540 kBps ( 4.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]
Descriptor #2 = 2770 kBps ( 2.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]
so
it can be a fake taiyo yuden or what =/
my writer is a Samsung [TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B TS04 (ATA)]
hope someone can tell me something :) thanks in advance

check your codes on the inner hubs they should match up with theses
Taiyo Yuden rated speed & format/ media ID coding / inner hub reading
4x DVD-R = TYG01 / GD00xxxx
8x DVD-R = TYG02 / GG00xxxx
16x DVD-R = TYG03 / GH00xxxx
4x DVD+R = YUDEN000T01 / i don't know cuz i don't have any :P
8x DVD+R = YUDEN000T02 / TG00xxxx
16x DVD+R = YUDEN000T03 / TH00xxxx
steer clear of the TDK most of them will code out as CMC mag which is bad news. also make sure you have the latest firmware update for your drive check here

i wrote that dvd identifier says:
Manufacturer ID : [TYG03]
so it matches with
16x DVD-R = TYG03 / GH00xxxx
but this is the problem..if it's really a TYG03 why im not able to select higher speed than 4x?

Hi dnb87
You're also quite a few versions behind on the burners firmware. Update to help it with the newer media like the 16x. Might also be part of the problem why you're don't getting higher burn speeds to pick from.
Here's TS10

@dnb87
You got the real deal there. Burn these at 8x.
There is also a newer firmware at the firmware page for this drive TS12 - link.
Not to sure on why Samsung site doesn't list is also.

Thanks.
The model probably doesn't indicate whether or not they are made in Japan or Taiwan (the only two manufacturers I've seen for the Sony 8x DVD+Rs), in other words, the model would be used for both manufacturers, even though the quality is different for those two manufacturers. If you can get your hands on an actual package and see who's made them, here's the scoop: Made in Japan: Excellent media, Taiyo Yuden, doesn't get any better than that. Made in Taiwan: Respectable media, I've had great results with it, but it does produce slightly lower quality scores, on average, than the MIJs. If the price was right, I'd use either one, but for the same price, the MIJs are better quality.

I used a pack of the Malaysian Sony discs awhile back, and while I wouldn't say it was "bad" media (from initial scans), it definitely wasn't on par with the Verbatim 16x DVD+Rs I've been using recently. I've been burning the Verbatims at 16x and am getting scans in the 90-95% range, while the Sony discs were in the 85-90% range. Both types were burned with a Benq 1655.

can anyone explain why taiyo yuden burn fails and displays "key medium error." it went perfect for about 40 DVDs and started experiencing burn problems ever since. it's either bad burns or some unreadable data for success burns. firmware updated. everything the same as before. why?

Here's a scan of my most recent burn of a Verbatim 16x DVD+R. I can guarantee that the Malaysian Sonys came nowhere close to this kind of result, even at the end of a 50 disc spindle.

Gonna hit the simple stuff first. :)
What media are you using? You know MID? ;-)
Your f/w is up to date but how bout a Disc Cleanup and HDD defrag? You might try CCleaner too. Just some simple things to look at first. We won't blame the media yet especially TY media at this point. ;-)
Another thing to look at is the progies you are using. Anything different with those in the last few weeks and a fresh install never hurts anything either. OK some things to try and ponder. :)

@blancpino: greensman brings up a good point. I used to swear by Nero as a great burning program (and I guess I still do, it's very good), but recently I've started using ImgBurn and it didn't take long for me to realize just what a great program it is. I'm actually considering uninstalling Nero, it's so good, and it's produced perfect results with any quality media I've thrown at it (so far TY 8x, Verbatim 8x and 16x, all DVD+R). It IS possible that your drive is failing, but you want to make sure it's hooked up correctly (the cables are firmly seated) and try doing some burns with nothing going on in the background (at least nothing active that would access your CPU or hard drive(s) excessively). If your burns still fail after that, there's a very good chance it's the drive itself. In other words, authentic Taiyo Yuden media would be just about the last thing I'd suspect is your problem. Good luck!

thanks greensman and delateur.
but i have used IMGburn and it worked, but the data cannot be verified. my think my burner is working fine, cuz i have no problem burning maxell, ritek and verbatim. i already did disk clean and defragm. i basically tried everything and other programs as well.
i think the only thing i can do now is to change to a different brand of media. any suggestion on the next good media after taiyo yuden?
thanks for all your help.
