verbatims are made in either taiwan or singapore unless you live in europe. they are the best taiwanese made media period. I even put their dvd+r's above taiyo yudens. you can find them in most B & M stores or online.

verbatim is the only media I use.

I know this is the TY thread but Mort81 does know his stuff and Verb's are dang good no doubt. I put the Verb's and TY's in the same category as they both perform well for me. :)

OK I forgot to ask. What drive are you currently using? Make, model, f/w and all that stuff.

It may be the TY media but if it is I would guess that you are using a NEWER drive and you possibly updated the f/w and something happened with the write strategy. Only thing at this point that I can think of besides the drive going out on you.

NOw Mort81 has given you another avenue for media. Give that a try and see what you come up with. btw where do you live? That will help us with suggestions on B&M stores. :)

As others have said, if you can't get TY, go for Verbatim. They are the only two brand I know of so far that consistently produce the absolute best results in DVD+R media. They probably are just as good with DVD-R, but I prefer to booktype to DVD-ROM.

greensman.

i have Liteon DVDRW SOHW-1633s drive, firmware BSOY. i currently use TYG02 Media code and usually burn at 4x.

I live in new york city. is there stores nearby i can purchase the media from, like bestbuy or staples? if purchase online, where can i get it?

i notice verbatim are made both in taiwan and singapore. i usually use DVD-R, is it okay if i use DVD+R?

thanks.

dont mean to jump in the middle of a convo, but you can get the verbs just about anywhere.. bestbuy might be the easiest place for you to get them. plus they price match and have them on sale allmost every other week. as for Mort81 like myself he/we/i love them 16x+r verbs i have gotten some of my best quality scans with them. cannot go wrong with the +r verbs.

just my 2 cents worth

@blancpino,
Did a little research in your area I think. LOL. Here's what I found that might do you some good. How old is that 1633? I hate to say it but she might be giving up the ghost if you've used her hard and fast. :) Maybe not if it does well with other media. Just thinking outloud really. :)
NOT the best discs but I've had luck with MID TDK 003. Might try them for the price. :)
TDK's at circuitcity.com

Again not the best media but not crap either. Good price again so give a try if you care to.
Sony's at CompUSA

BEST option but not the best price but in the end may save you money because of quality. ;-) who really knows.
Verb's at microcenter.com

As far as DVD+R, I think that's the way to go. I use both but I prefer the option to booktype to DVD-ROM when I can. It makes the disc more "playable" to use a term loosely. :P If you use IMGBURN, go into the booktype settings and make sure your Lite-On is auto-setting the DVD+R's to DVD-ROM. :)

...gm

@cincyrob,
YOu just but in buddy when ever you feels the need. :) It's always good to get another person's view on things.

@blancpino,
Just thought about what cincyrob said, "price match", if you print out that add with the Verb's I'm VERY sure that BB will match that price. They have for me many times here in the Lone Star State. :P

As far as online ordering goes for Verbatim, I find that both buy.com and newegg.com usually have pretty reasonable prices, and oftentimes they run a rebate, as well, which can give you an incredible price, if you don't mind waiting for the refund check. For instance, buy.com is currently selling a 100 pack of the 16x +Rs for $36, and then there's a mail in rebate that brings them down to $25, and free shipping to boot! With or without the rebate, that's a great price for top shelf media.

if you can order the Verbs online and get them with free shipping it is a good deal. but to pay shipping for them that sucks not much of adeal. verbs are easy to get at just about any store. bestbuy circuit ccity(which the one close to me just closed down) office max, office depot walmart, staples everyone has verbs and at one time or another they all have them on a dirt cheap sale.

blancpino,

in regards to your lite-on SOHW-1633S, I would crossflash it with some patched SOHW-1653S f/w to make it more compatable with more media. I did this to my 1633 and it made it a much better drive imo.

here's a link to some patched 1653 f/w. you will need to use one of these.

? CS0T - patched - crossflashing - fast burn FBD/FBDX (for 1633S, 1653S etc.)
? CS0T - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1633S, etc.)

Yujenh, most the newer players (Phillips Oppo etc. are great) will play both formats NTSC or PAL just check the specs before you buy it or take one of your backups to the store with you and try it out in there demo before you buy it. also theres a new firmware update for your PX-716A 1.11 if you don't already have it

No bother, never a bother... I really like my 4200+ BUT w/ any CPU after awhile all you what is more, more power ah, ah, ha, its a curse placed upon me- I want to get into the f series or something like aabbccdd had with his AMD. Hopefully when I get some extra cash those will still be around- getten harder to fine high end 939 mobo CPUs that I want.I still do not have my mobo temp where I want 40 w/ out the air conditioner on- but thats soon to be fixed w/ some hardcore fans I found. anyways love your burners...someday, someday, me to- those are right on top!

as for the stand alones... well I burn alot of movies for people and it can be nerve racking w/ people w/ older machines... In my personal opinion and what I own which are the Sony DVP-NS775v [frontroom] and the DVP-NS50p [bedroom]- I can put a waffle in either one and play Star Wars...

I did not like the older Sonys because they would only play DVD+R media BUT they have come a long way sense then...not sure where you live but CircuitCity has the DVP-Ns55P/S on sale all of these DVD players remember where you left off even after you remove the disk from the player my frontroom one remembers 40 disks and the bedroom 7.

Nothing wrong with the -R imho. I use more of them then +R just cause the printables are much cheaper in that format.

The diff is +R can be booktyped to DVD-Rom making them more compatible w/ players but today's players now support both formats.

Now for Dual Layer I would only use +R DL. Players are even picky with that and booktyping them is your best bet. Plus the reverse here +R DL has been around longer and is better supported then -R DL.
