Using tsmuxer, I muxed an mkv with h.264 video and ac3 audio into m2ts files. I changed the level to 4.1 and everything. I split it into 2 files so it would copy to my usb stick(a 3.9gb & 720mb file).
Anyways, my ps3 will read and play the smaller 2nd file but it won't read or play the larger one. I get the unsupported data, data corrupted messages. Any idea what's wrong?
I get the same problems when using mkv2vob too, and I've tried other mkvs with the same results.
Did you format both USB sticks as FAT32? Just curious - what if you split the file by half? Or put the smaller file in the first stick? Could you have a bad stick?
Thanks for the reply. I only have one stick, it's a 16gb USB stick that's formatted to FAT32, I also tried copying them to the harddrive from the usb and it wouldn't play from there either.
And I also used tsmuxer again, splitting the mkv into 3 m2ts files under 2gb, but only the smaller 900mb file would play.

Ok, you're right... I tried copying the files by dvdrw and they played fine. I guess this is what I get for buying a cheap usb stick off ebay... haha. Thanks.

Hi Ryu,
I have read this thread for the past 2 days or so, looking for a poster with the same problem as my own. While I see some that are similar, none are exactly my problem so this is why I have posted.
I have a .mkv file that plays incorrectly on my PS3. Here is a MediaInfoRaw readout:
Format : Matroska
File size : 2.18 GiB
PlayTime : 2h 23mn
Bit rate : 2182 Kbps
Encoded date : UTC 2007-12-04 00:32:40
Writing application : mkvmerge v2.0.2 ('You're My Flame') built on Feb 21 2007 23:40:55

Now then, I can MKV2VOB this file fine and it WILL play on the PS3 but it keeps the aspect ratio that is stated above and therefore is squished on the screen. However, it will play in the .mkv container on my PC in a ratio of 1280x544. Why is it that it will play is a correct aspect ratio on my PC but not on the PS3? Is there a way to fix the video from playing squished on my PS3?

when i try to convert it to ac3 again, using besweet or behappy, i just get a ac3 file with no audible audio
edit: okay so it loads and converts in belight(besweet) and converts fine with ac3enc, but not with aften

Hey all,
Having the same problem that people are having with remuxed .mkv files with level 5.1 h.264 encodes playing audio but not showing video after remuxing.
I follwed Ryu's suggestion of:
mkvextractGUI > demux .dts and h.264 streams
h264info (alpha 23) > convert to profile L4.1
used meGUI + AC3filter > convert .dts to .ac3
tsMuxeR > mux the raw h.264 + .ac3 file into .m2ts file
PS3 won't recognize .m2ts, so after some Googling, renamed to .m2t and it's readable - but I'm still getting no video. audio works fine.
help? thanks!

Usually the number of reference frames allocated for this encode (see the number I marked in red) would be acceptable for a video stream of this resolution. However, x264 builds earlier than 721 tied in the way it allocated b-frames and b-pyramids to the number of reference frames allocated. Ok, I've probably confused you now... To cut this short, your video has been encoded with an older x264 encoder and the way it has been encoded exceeds the DPB (decoded picture buffer) for Blu-ray compliancy. So, your only option is to re-encode the video stream.
The reason it is working with mkv2vob is because this software is actually re-encoding the video first. The "squished" picture that you mentioned is because mkv2vob is messing up the resizing of the video. Your source video has a resolution of 960 x 544. To make this Blu-ray compliant, black borders will need to be added to fill the vertical resolution and also a resize of 1920 x 1080 will need to be performed.

so I'm comparing the files that aren't working (the ones that i've used mkv2vob to convert) and they're all L5.1.
Ryu you thought the reason that some videos weren't showing video but had audio was because of the level, right?
obviously it's something else. argh.. this is frustrating.

Save yourself the grief and recode the video, rather than pulling your hair our waiting for a response.
If your video is 1080p it was most likeley encoded with a certain spec not compatitible with the PS3. I have ran into the same problem a few times, a recode with the latest version of x264.exe and MeGUI/AviSynth will solve your issue 99.9% of the time.

Read through this thread and this one too; http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346. Gather as much knowledge regarding the topic, there are also several mini how-to's throughout both. If you still cannot get it I will be glad to help, if I cannot help I'm sure others will.

I'm not understanding. Are you saying you have the file on your 8GB USB stick and the PS3 is not reading the USB drive or the file? What type of file is it?
Also, from what I understand, the PS3 can only read FAT32-formatted flash drives, and because of the FAT32 filesize limit (4GB), any file > 4GB has to be split up into 4GB chunks. Could that be your problem?

Well there's 2 things going on here.
first, the PS3 can't play .mkv files, so you'll have to remux it to .vob or transcode it to another format that that PS3 can play (which is what the purpose of this thread is.. to tell you how to do that).
second, as I said before, if you can't transfer it to your USB flash drive, it's because your USB flash drive is formatted as FAT32 and FAT32 won't let you transfer files over 4GB, so that's why it won't let you transfer it - your file is over 4GB.
so use mkv2vob to remux the .mkv file and choose the option Split File > 4GB for FAT32 so it will put it into 2 2GB files. then you can put it on your USB flash drive, and then take it over to your PS3.

this thread is great, I have been able to take mkv's and make mt2s files to play on the ps3. I also have created movie intros using blender(fox logo changed to my theater name). I was wondering if there was a way to combine the intro with the M2Ts files I created so that I have a seemless home theater display when starting a movie.
I tried it with tsMuxer and I got an error message saying the file extensions had to be the same. I made the extentions the same but I get another error when trying to append the file with tsMuxer.
has anyone tried to do this before? any help would be appricated.

I've often thought about doing this myself. Both video files, intro and main movie would have to be encoded the exact same. You can do this by using AviSynth with MeGUI, just do two separate recodes using the same Blu-Ray profile.
Have a look through this thread, you'll find it interesting too.

Is there any way to convert non-720p (like 1280x544) .mkv videos to a format that PS3 understands with the original aspect ratio intact?
mkv2vob changes the aspect ratio so the video is stretched and so does tsmuxer.
mkv2vob also seems to invert front left and front right audio channels.
At least the two videos I "remuxed" had this problem.

Use tsMuxeR, your TV will keep the AR and fill in the black bars. There is a link to where you can download tsMuxeR in at the beginning of this thread.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346
How to use:
1. Load your mkv
2. Highlight the video stream, change the AVC level from 5.1 to 4.1 if neccesary
***Note*** DTS is not compatible with m2ts, must convert to AC3 using eac3to with eac3toGUI ***Note***
3. Choose m2ts (for PS3 compatibility) as the output, with this format there is no size restriction.
4. Start muxing

I saw in the earlier posts maybe someone can tell me how but i think you are supposed to be able to copy over a avchd movie so that you have the whole movie on your ps3 hard drive and don't have to split it up into smaller than 4gb files and play them seperately. Every time I make a avchd file it plays fine from the my external drive but it will not let me copy it over to the ps3 hard drive is there a way to fix this?

You can copy a m2ts file, but not the AVCHD/Blu-Ray structured files (BDMV & Certificate). If you copy over a m2ts file DTS or subs will not work.

Hi everybody,
Recently I found the way to make AVCHD out of .mkv files, in order to play HD movies on my PS3.
So, as you described many times in prior posts, I use mkvextract to obtain the .h264, .ac3 files out of a .mkv, then I run h264info to change the level to 4.1 and finally I use tsmuxer to create a Blu-ray structure (note: I also insert a .srt file, with subtitles for my language - not English :p ).
My question is if anyone knows how to proceed with output files bigger than 4.7 GB. I know tsmuxer has the ability to split files, but I have seen the following result:
Have a let's say 6 GB .h264 and it's equivalent .ac3 file and .srt file, load them in tsmuxer, choose to split at 4 gb -> the output is a blu-ray structure, with the folders BMDV and CERTIFICATE, and in BMDV/STREAM/ i have 2 files - let's say xxxx.m2ts and yyyy.m2ts.
My question (boy, I thought i won't stop writing) is:
Is there any way to write this on 2x 4.7gb DVDs ?
Thank you for your time,
Stef

You have three options:
1. Use an external USB FAT32 hard drive that will fit the entire movie (or use DVD9 or Bluray discs)
2. Split the MKV file into two portions, ensuring each portion is no bigger than 4.3GB (due to M2TS overheads). Then do your procedure above for each portion.
3. After you have done the h264info on your entire movie as per your procedure, mux the movie into a TS/M2TS format. Then use TSSplitter to split the file, then remux in TsMuxer each split portion to Bluray.
Because you are also incorporating subtitles, this might get a little messy, haven't really tried it with subtitles.
