i've been reading and learning a lot about cpus/memory/oc'in these days, so i'm absorbing info left and right...hence, my reason to be more "few and far between" in my own thread~ :)

lust bought and installed the 1650 from new egg but never messed with the firmware. how do I check if what I have is the latest and is it dangerous to the machine to tweak it.thought I saw it in an earlier threadbut then must have passed over it while quick scanning so please forgive me if I am repeating. have learned so much from this thread.please forgive me if this is a rerun

@dagodan

no worries, i am willing to bet that the 1650 you got will NOT have the latest firmware, mine didn't, but i updated it right after i installed it inside my computer...here ya go:

http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=...

this is the latest official one, BCDC, however, an even newer one is mentioned in the dvd drives forum posted by zebadee...i am going to wait till the others at cdfreaks do more testing on the latest one from china before i flash mine... :)

if by "tweaking" your firmware, you mean cross-flashing and such, then yes, there IS a risk of doing so if you are unfamiliar with the process...it voids your warranty too~ :)

but, if you mean simply upgrading firmware...no, it will not harm your computer assuming you don't interrupt the flashing process (ie. turning off your computer, power surge, electrical outage, etc.) :)

good luck

docTY~

@storm

well, guess that's what i get for ordering mine from Canada~ LOL

what is the manufacturer date on your 1650? mine is Dec. of 2005, that's most likely the reason WHY mine is not up-to-date outta the box, cuz the latest firmware wasn't available then...LOL (the latest firmware was released on 1/20/06, a good month after my drive was manufactured hahahaha)

I've personally never flashed in safemode. The only thing I'm careful to do is not run any applications that use most of my processing power. Then I just sit back and let it finish, reboot, and go on with my business. I'm using the firmware from China at the moment (BCFC). It doesn't seem any worse than the latest official release (BCDC).

ok,just bought and installed a new benq 1650 with bcdc fw as master on the secondary channel,with 80 pin ide cable,i checked,
alone,since my hd is SATA.
Now,is it normal that,when i use imgburn,the buffer stays at 100% the whole time,but the device buffer stays around 85-90% and sometimes drops back to 20% for a split second?

first burn scan is here

@kivory666

Yea lol, Feb 06 :) My 1650 from newegg.com I havent used all that much maybe 1 or 2 backups I think around 95%. My OEM Benq 1655 with latest firmware and alrdy a benq outta the box is doing better then my 1650. Its been doing 95 - 98%, mostly 97 and 98, cant seem to hit 99. Storm~

My apologies. I'm just a stickler for accurate information. I have no allegience to Sony. I'll buy whatever is quality media. When Maxell starts selling 16x MIJs in 50-packs or 100-packs, I'll be buying those. I'm just a bit frustrated by all the inaccurate info that keeps going around and around and around and never seems to end.

It's understandable. Even Doc isn't infallable. But when you post something five consecutive times, it will rub people the wrong way. If you have questions or concerns about media, just voice them in a respectul manner. This is a good thread, I just don't want to see it become otherwise. AD is a full of flame wars nowadays. Cheers!

apology accepted...no harm, no foul~ :)

i just don't appreciate being "called out" on what i say when i did not make a "mistake" :)

if i made a mistake, i would hope someone would correct me right away, as tokijin stated, i am NOT infalliable~ :) just a normal human being like everyone else...

let's keep this thread going, in peace...i value everyone's opinion on whatever particular media, whether i agree with them or not, that might be a completely different story, but their OPINIONS and their RIGHT TO HAVE AN OPINION, are respected by me~ :)

@taiyouser

i've never had to flash in "safe mode"...i think most drive flashing utilities from the manufacturer are pretty good, without the need to be in "safe mode"... :) i can see why people might suggest this, to be on the "safe side" of things, but i don't think it's necessary as long as you don't shut down the computer or get a nasty power surge during the flash (not that you could prevent or expect it, but you know...) :)

yeah, it's normal, sometimes i get fluctuations like that in the buffer during my burns too, no need to worry~ :) as to using TDK's own manufactured media, yes, as my buddy catfreak alluded to, i despise that crap...it's only MY opinion though...ok, it's OUR opinion of TDK's own stuff (catfreak and i) :) but, it's not too bad...however, you can not weigh the accuracy of that scan since your disc size is only 2444. were the movie longer, your quality score will inevitably be lower...by how much? i dunno, but it would not remain a 97, which is pretty darn high for a TT coded TDK disc~ :)

sounds like a plan buddy, i am totally unfamiliar with the game backups/ game consoles, etc...so, forgive me for thinkin it was a movie~ :P

the most recent game console that i even own is a Dreamcast~ how many years ago was it that a Dreamcast was "THE thing to have?" LOL, so you can imagine i'm very much "out of the gaming scene" :)

burn on and good luck

thanks doc and storm for the info . my benq came with the latest firmware also. after reading all the posts i totally agree with tokijin. this has been the most informative thread that I have subscribe. we are all looking for the same thing; good media that burns well and doesn't fail. I am not much of a gamer but I do a lot of movies and there is nothing more frustrating than having to reburn when going back to a movie that fails after a relatively short period of time. have learned so mich from this thread keep up the good work guys
