Made in Taiwan Verbatims are very good media. It is the only made in taiwan media that you should be buying. I am getting better scores with verbatims than taiyo yudens actually. They both use the AZO DYE on their DVD's, which helps create long lasting DVD's.

@ Jurgennop .. You need to turn WOPC off, activate SolidBurn and give your DW1650 3 or 4 burns to really 'learn' that media ... Also, the BenQ drives really don't like the -R media too much and with that in mind, your second scan is pretty darn good!

When you use quality media (like MCC and Yuden) WOPC is not necessary and with it off I seem to get more consistant burns with fewer random spikes ...

If you use inferior media, it IS necessary to use WOPC .. but, in your case, it looks like you're using the 'good stuff' ...

@Cincy Rob: A firmware update can update everything the drive does, but varies from version to version. Typically it adds burning routines for the latest media to hit the consumer market, so that it will burn that media well and generate fewer coasters or errors. It can also upgrade how well the drive reads various types of media, which will end up producing better CDSpeed scans, amongst other things. Sometimes firmware will also change how drive LEDs perform, typically with the intent of giving the user more information about how the drive is functioning. With very few exceptions, new official firmware means your drive is going to perform better.

@cincyrob-- I was at my local Sam's Club (Greensboro,NC) and I saw that 75 pk of Sony DVDs. The package was a 50 cakebox and a 25 cake box shrinked wrapped together. The 50 pk was MIJ and the 25 pk was MIT. They were all that way, I rumaged thru them all to see. Did you notice this at your Sams Club?

Just got back from Sam's Club with 75 Sony-branded TYs. They had mostly 16x discs, but I searched in the back of the pile and came up with some 8x MIJs/octagonal spacer.
