Quote: having some issues with the sonix tool. ive downloaded it but i cant get it to run, for some reason it wont extract. what do i do?
you need to run DVD Decrypter first and
create an .iso of the GODOFWAR dvd.
Then apache 2 To extract both layers of the
.iso you just created.
Extract layer 0 to a new folder named gow
There is a hidden layer 1 containing 1 file pak2 (4gb)
Extract that one to the same folder.
My guess is your trying to run the tool on the .iso itself or that your are missing the pak 2 files.

Finally..............
After 2 days, I got it..........Hurray..........
I kept getting "couldn't locate godofwar\system.cnf" when using iml/ims files sonix had put in his tutoraial. My conclusion is that the ones provided by sonix are either corrupted or just not working version
I Just now took Jizmak's idea/input & created GOW.IML & IMS using cddvdgen, once this was done I opened apache2, build iso, & all worked well no more error message. (why didn't I try this earlier....)
Believe it or not I wasted 2 days on this & now have a working version (actually now have a 3.47 iso, ready for burning which I'm doing now using nero) once I've finished burning, I'll tell you if it works on PS2.
I have DMS4pro chip & using Toxic.

So i backed up my copy using this method, and when I put it in, it just resets back to my browser. In the browser it recognizes it as a ps2 game, but just resets back to the browser each time i go to boot it. Obviously I did something wrong somewhere. Anyone have any ideas of what could have caused this?
a word to guide me in..

just follow my instructions on the first page.
Quote: You have to use apache 2 to extract both layers.
The files must be placed together and fully
extracted (not in .iso form).
Run apache 2
make a new folder gow.
open the godofwar iso
extract layer 0 to the gow folder.
extract layer 1 to the gow folder.

Ok, this is a multi-part post, but this thread is long, I've read it all, and have a few points to make.
REGARDING 'solution' for system.cnf error from apache2 which is encountered using TRUE SONIX method (pdf from his site)
RXV2300 posted the solution as this:
Create gow.iml & gow.ims using cddvdgen
Open apache2, build iso, Burn iso & play
So how do you (RXV or anyone) feel about this comment by wolf616?
Yeah it will run fine or you can burn it@!! but guess what on the time where your going to 4 state where like sand and a moving fortest it will freeze.!!
---
I personally have stopped at the cnf error phase for now, but it seems to me that using half of the TRUE SONIX method, and half of Jizmak's re-write/old version of the Sonix method is going to produce squirley results.
But just in case - RXV2300, at what point in the process do you use cddvdgen to create the ims/iml files, and exactly what are the steps to do that?
--
Jizmak, can you explain why there are 2 versions of this method attributed to sonix?
--
And jborlace, if you still have pak2 problems re-work the process with enough disc space, you probably DID mess up the file by running out of space in the middle of the process.
I'd also love it if anyone could breifly tell me if there is a way to save the 'deleted' bonus videos, either for viewing on the PC, or via downsampling them to fit into the ISO image, or on another CD (i.e. make this game 2 CDs).
Thanks to everyone providing input and feedback, at least to those who know how to speak/type english :)
I look forward to playing this backed up game for weeks to come. It has lived up to my expectations much more than Devil May Cry 3.

Wolf616 is blowing hot air........
Just finished the game in easy mode & didn't experience freezing at any point of the game.
For the game you better have good mochip, forget swap magic method.

There are more than one way to make the .iso.
I find it easier to use apache and load the .iml files that way.
You also can combing them using dos.
The only MUST is apache 2 to extract the "hidden layer",and the tool for the re-linking.
I posted they wat I used that works.
I gave the credit to sonix beacuse with out
his tools it would have never happened.

Makes sense,
So with your version of the method are there any anticipated problems using a Swap-Magic setup to play the backup??

Swap-magic is not a good option for this game or any game that has much files sich as god fo war..
Basically swap-magic is quick & requires no soldering like a modchip but is not as effective.
I used swap magic for quite some time until x'mas, & every 3rd game I backedup would start to freeze, this is not the case with DMS4pro modchip.
I've backedup many mnay games & not one has yet froze on me at any point of the game.

I followed Jizmak's original procedure exactly and it worked like a charm. I have no problems playing the backup. Thanks man!

Kenshin77, are you using a soldered in chip, or the swap magic?
Im sure the swap magic will work somehow...right?
A couple ppl said they had to boot cd-dvd-then backup, which is 1 more step, but hey, I usually leave my PS2 on anyways, so I do this once every few days or so, not that big of a deal.
