Sorry, but I am not very knowledgeable and may not have understood the bit Do you mean that that the side that is up in the reader/burner should not have a label. And if that is so then why are the movies and other dvds that are commercially available all labeled. I have backed up hundreds of movies and used a memorex program to make labels and stick them to my back-ups. Does that mean that they will not last or are in some way subject to not playing consistentely and effectively? I really enjoy and learn a lot from this thread. Thanks a lot guys. Bernard

In the three years I have been backing up DVD's I have become quite expert at removing labels from my kids backups they use in the Minivan. I can strip a label in about 45 seconds now using Sea Breeze and H20.
@frbernard, I'm not sure why they become unplayable, but they do, trust me, the labels look cute but open yourself up to frustration when the disk starts skipping or freezing and you are on the interstate. Been there done that, don't wish it upon anyone. Office Depot always has good prices on sharpies, color code them so that the kids know that green for example, are their movies, Black are yours, pink are for chick-flicks, and red, well, use your imagination... Hope this helps.

After reading quite a few pages of this thread I discover the Doc's like got a PhD in Taiyo Yuden DVDs LOL
@nightport

well, since i'm here in the U.S., i can't be of any GREAT help to ya, but, svp is the same place our moderator 'creaky' purchases from...last i heard, his "sexy Verb TYs" (ie. TYG02- genuine Taiyo Yudens branded under the Verbatim name) were out of stock...you have creaky to thank for THAT~ LOL he bought them ALL up, but you may want to add yourself to the "notify me" list if more ever becomes available~ :) these are cheaper, but come in tubs of 25, so multiple this by 4 and ya STILL save some money over buying the unbranded TYs(IF they come back in stock and assuming you want 100 pieces, from what creaky has said, you might as well stock up while you can in a single order as the VAT only increases slightly regardless of how many tubs you purchase, so might as well get the most "bang for the buck" as we say here in the U.S.) :)

http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=221

there ya go, thanks for the compliment in the above quote, i actually have my M.D. in neurosurgery, but a PhD in Taiyo Yuden would be a nice plaque to hang on my office wall as well~ :) if you know how i could go about obtaining one, please do tell :P
Quote:
It says unbranded though. Does that mean the face of the DVDs will be blank?
yes, the ones in your link are GENUINE unbranded Taiyo Yudens(meaning the top side will be shiny silver-thermal, no logo or branding of any kind) you COULD print on top of them IF you have a thermal printer, but, most people do not own one so a Sharpie (permanent marker) will be just fine to label them...if you did have an inkjet printer that has the capability to print directly to cd/dvd, THIS particular unbranded TY WILL NOT work in terms of the printing surface...inkjet printer ink will NOT adhere to a thermal surface, just a FYI~ :)

hope that clarifies things a bit for ya...come on back to this thread if you have any more questions regarding TY, i'll be here to answer to your heart's content~ :)

docTY~

cheers

LOL :)

indeed, woe is me, and the rest of the UK too by all accounts (i'm on the run as ppl keep trying to get hold of my stocks of the fabled & ultra-sexy Verb TYG02!). i've started attacking svp's stock of Verbatim Yuden000T03 now so they're on the endangered list now hehe. i'm jumping ship with my Made in India MCC004's due to one of the discs barfing on me; whilst i've used oodles of Indian Verbs over time i don't want to risk any more of these MCC004 going duff on me (they probably won't but i'm having them swapped now anyway with more Yuden000T03). Payday is a mere week away so will still be keeping my eye on more Yuden000T03's :) :)

wow, has creaky got super-fine-tuned RADAR or what???? a mere mention of his name and he's HERE~! :)

anyways, good idea buddy, while i haven't used any Indian produced Verbs, i would always recommend Taiyo Yudens over them since you've had one "barf" on ya~ :) if you can return your truckload of them in an EXCHANGE for the YUDEN000T03s, i would do it in a heartbeat~ :) that's just my opinion on it, i do agree that would be a VERY INTELLIGENT idea if svp is fine and dandy with it~

Wow! Thanx docTY! You are TEH dude. Those sexy Verbs look good to me and I'm pretty happy that 4 of those 25-packs work out cheaper than the 100-pack of Taiyo Yudens. I have clicked 'Notify me' and I want to hear from them soon! I just hope creaky doesn't buy the whole lot the minute SVP gets them in stock, lol.

Cheers and keep up the neurosurgery work!

@Nightport - it's been a while since they had them in and therefore i very much doubt they will get any more (the US didn't even get a sniff of those discs at all). Ppl were even selling the tubs on eBay at ramped up prices but i don't mind paying a little bit extra for Yuden000T03 or vanilla TY (i like the Verb branded ones due to the matte finish, i personally don't like the plain silver top of TY as they smudge too much for my liking). i'm assuming the Yuden000T03 are the replacements over the 8x TYG02..but it is odd that they vanished off the face of the earth after such a short time on sale..

However if they do get any in i'll be on the case. actually i'll click that notify box too as you never know i guess

@Tokijin: Thanks for the information on the PS2 forums! Forewarned is forearmed and all that. ;) It's unfortunate that in our experimentation with producing good quality backups, we so many times argue with each other over the validity of different methods when oftentimes everyone is correct. I'm glad you agree with my methods, because you wouldn't be doing so if you hadn't had success with them, also. Thanks, as always, for your contributions. :)

@nightport & creaky

LOL, i clicked on the "notify me" button too just for the hell of it~ HAHAHAHHAHAHA...they can notify me ALL they want, but too bad i'll never be able to actually purchase them~ :)

creaky was right in that the U.S. never got a taste of those "sexy Verb TYs"...and i will be inclined to even state that we will NEVER have them over here on our shores...but all is well and good~ :)

no worries, the YUDEN000T03s are expected to be released very soon here in the U.S. from what i've spoken to my TY rep. about recently...about darn time~! much like my purchase of the Benq 1650 from Canada, and it being available about a month after here in the U.S., the same will hold true with the 16x DVD+R Taiyo Yudens (YUDEN000T03)...

U.S. might be early releasers of certain hollywood movies and other technology, but selection of dvd media is definitely NOT one of our strengths~ :) you boys over in Europe get new flavors of media WELL before we do, so we will just have to make due with what we have presently~ :P

@catfreak

buddy, you are definitely right about that~ :) i was just too impatient with my benq 1650, i just HAD to be one of the first in the U.S. with the drive...patience is not a virtue that i would call one of my "good attributes" :)

but, i will say that our prices over here are much BETTER on media, despite the relatively smaller selection to choose from...well, we all know i get my TYs directly from Taiyo Yuden, however limited the quantity, at least i got to "try out" 10 pieces of the YUDEN000T03s from few months ago...just wish i could get my hands on them now rather than later as my YUDEN000T02s are running low (only about 200 left~) LOL

docTY~

have a great day Victor~

congrats~ :) hehehe...i guess if i'm not converting people to using Taiyo Yudens, then i'm pulling people into getting the Benq 1650~ :)

i have both the Benq 1640 & 1650, i don't have any of the Lightscribe capable drives (ie. 1655), but that's just me~

hehehe...it's an excellent drive, you will be pleased...the 1650 DEFINITELY can run FULL scans using Nero cd/dvd speed, i got dozens of scans to prove it~ :)

lemme know if you want some suggestions with the settings i use from QSuite v2.1 (a MUST DL to fully utilize the various features of the 1650...ie. Solidburn, WOPC, Booktyping, Overspeed control, etc>)

congrats again~

I've got the LG1622D external since Xmas. It's lightscribe capable. the only one to date I did was terrible. I didn't do it thru the best quality yet. But that seems to put much on the laser. Now that I'm getting the benq I'll scarifice the LG. It's a fine writer also.

what is the differnce between the Benq 1650 and 1655 [lightscib?] I have been dropping in and out of this thread from the begining and have learned much and have scratched my head at other times- I do not stand firm on many things on combo seletions of programs and media, but lean very hard on Taiyo Yudens [very hard to try other media when the failure rate on TYs are next to zero] what i am having trouble with is the labels... I use the avery program and copy over 900 movies and have and endless supply of labels, I realize that alot of people are very, very smart at this, but I have been checking DVDs that I burned a year and a half and no problems... a mater of fact I never have any problems with labels- [knock on wood] the only problems I have is some time I can not copy from a copy [ with out the label] I use cloneDVD2 and 1 click- but mostly AnyDVD and Clone2... I think it is my sony single layer DW-U18A<Rev. JyS1> thought it was firmware but cant find any anywhere for it ... maybe to low grade... what is better and why on the fly or HD first?

The difference between the DW1650 and the DW1655 is the LightScribe feature on the DW1655 .. and it is enabled by the firmware .. for some reason, at least from what I've heard, you can't make a DW1655 out of a DW1650 .. but you can make a DW1650 out of a DW1655 .. I believe that the chipset is the same, and my DW1655/1650 only has one laser so ... I guess I need to purchase a DW1650 and compare them

@ garmoon I think that it's more of a waste to burn a label that you're not happy with ... you've wasted your laser and your disc both ... personally, I don't waste a drive that I burn discs with burning labels .. I use a HP740b and I set the quality on 'best' and use the 'Extended Label Contrast Utility' that is available at the following link:
http://www.lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=306
Believe me, it makes a difference ...

what do you mean by a label not happy with? I guess what I am asking is to use two drives at once... one to write and one to scrib an other movie that i am happy with at once. probably have to up grade power supply to 500+ from 400 though

I am sorry for the interrupption then... Really choose not to use my imagination at this point, was just try'en to learn- as I have in the past with those willing to teach.As for the label being liked... there is a differance between ones personal likes and the integrity and capability of a drive.
