i love that the safety valve posts dont count. people were going in there and becoming senior members and addicts in no time. i really dont care what status people are. as long as they know what they are talking about when giving advice and trying to help.

and yes.. sata drive for $69. sounds like a good price

all very true, however, it is a matter of principle ... I've been posting here at AD for 743 days and in that length of time I've seen many many people spam the safety valve and become addicts while I've primarily posted in response to people's problems and questions ... by refusing to post several hundred times a week in the safety valve before the new rules went into place it makes me seem like I'm not as knowledgeable as the kids spamming the safety valve ...

What really set me off was this message in my shoutbox:

I though you were afterdawn addict . . .

@cincyrob

i PERSONALLY do not like Samsung drives, but that's JUST ME~ :)

one thing you SHOULD look out for is the manufacturer's warranty...i have recently been "burned" by having 2 Western Digital "regular PATA" drives die on me....one a 200gig and the other a 250gig...

i have had NOTHING but problems with Maxtor drives in the past, i can safely say i've RMA'd at LEAST 1/2 dozen Maxtor drives over the last 5 years...i would have returned MORE, but the warranty was already expired~ :(

anyways, i have since switched my allegiance to Seagate manufactured drives, i have (4) four 300gig drives SATA II on my 3 computers right now; i can tell you RIGHT now that once you go SATA, the difference in SPEED is DEFINITELY there~ :) i did a fresh install of WinXP and format for one of my Seagate drives and on my main rig. is SCREAMING fast in terms of access times compared to my PATA Western Digitals~ :)

but, the way i look at it, if your budget allows it, LOOK FOR A GOOD warranty length on whichever manufacturer u decide to go with...i believe Samsung is 3 years? if i'm not mistaken, i well could be wrong....Seagate has the 5 year warranty on drives, hence, my decision to go with them~ :) Western Digital also has 3-year warranties too~ :)

but, if u are looking for a BASIC upgrade in terms of storage space, any of the hard drive companies will do...unless you plan on setting up a RAID configuration or you have the money to afford the Raptor series with the 10,000rpm speed...it all boils down to what you WANT and can afford...i'm perfectly content with a hearty 300 gig capacity, that's enough for me...and with it being SATA II (3GB/sec)with NCQ, it's stable, fast, and ultra-quiet...

here is a link to what i got, just for reference purposes:

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=101543

i have 4 of these puppies w/ the 16mb buffer, these are the best drives I have personally owned and used in all my years with computers...just MY opinion~ :)

good luck

docTY~

I think Doc may be onto something there. I was looking for a 400GB HD for my soon to be modded X-Box, and the people in the know cautioned against Maxtor. I went with a Western Digital 400GB SATA 7200RPM 150 Raid instead. WD's quality seemed a little better than Maxtor. I certainly am no guru on HD's, that's just what people who build PC's regularly told me. This is what I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144424R

Mind you refurbished parts are a gamble. It could theorectically be a giant POS. But the price was too good to pass up. Newegg.com is a reputable site, so I'm not too worried about it.

Okay guys, you are now scaring me, I have 6 maxtor drives in various computers for the past 10 years and no problems as of yet, but have had two Western Digital drives die on me....

@blivetNC

no worries, i found out later that 4 out of my 10 Maxtor drives in the past were recalled by the manufacturer as a "bad batch"...LOL, much like media huh? ironic isn't it?

anyways, for the MOST part Maxtor drives NOWADAYS are pretty decent, if i'm not mistaken Western Digital bought out Maxtor...or was it the other way around? either way, they are the SAME company now merged...use the same factories to manufacturer together...

lately, Western Digital drives are pretty good, i bought a 200gig. recently, manufactured Feb. 2006 to replace one of the other ones in my 3rd comp, so far, it's great~ :) i have no worries as to the durability of it...3 year RETAIL warranty, so, i'm not concerned... :)

i've been building computers for over 7+ years now, have built easily 2 dozen comps over the years, while i'm A NEWBIE to overclocking and such, i'm a seasoned veteran to builds...

for all those concerned with certain hardware components, EVERYONE will have their own "preferences" as to what components to USE and suggest to others, whether or not we are "fan boys" of certain companies or not, that is irrelevant...only CERTAIN companies out there should be avoided at all costs, it's very similar to media...

anyone else want MY suggestions on components, feel free to post here in my thread...i am pretty well versed in cpus, memory, heatsink/fans, drives, video cards, hard drives, motherboards, power supplies, etc... :) i'm not much of a "software" guy, but i KNOW my hardware...another "hobby" of mine~ :)

Yeah truth is I know next to nothing about HD's, I just researched what works well with the X-Box. According to a friend of mine who's modded around 300 X Boxes, the X-Box works great with WD drives. I paid a little more, but it's worth it in my opinion. Newegg.com seems like a great site, I ordered it last night in the wee morning hours, and it shipped today. I noticed Doc and others used them frequently. It's not brain surgery (bad pun very much intended) that Doc knows what he's doing and is anal and choosy when picking sites to order from. Thanks for the tip.

LOL

it all comes from experience tokijin buddy, yes, there are members here that have MANY years experience on me in terms of computers and such, but i have learned everything i know about computers MYSELF...through trial and error and naturally, through google to find info about certain products before i buy... :)

much like media, i TRY different components/companies to see FOR MYSELF what works best...others will have different OPINIONS on whether for example, "western digital is better than maxtor" or "seagate drives suck," "AMD is better than Intel" or vice versa, etc. etc... there are an INFINITE number of variables and possible setups people from around the world can have...i just found WHAT WORKS BEST FOR ME and recommend accordingly. :)

i've used Intel and AMD chips in the past, i have both right now running on 2 diff. computers, i happen to be a big fan of Mushkin memory, but am now using OCZ Platinums for my AMD rig...heatsinks, i will ALWAYS recommend Zalman for THE BEST and most quiet/efficient heatsinks, power supplies i've used Zalman, Ultra, Enermax, Antec, etc...i could go on for days regarding EACH and every component i've used in the past or currently use in my various setups, but it boils down to EVERYONE has their OWN PREFERENCES about parts :) yes, SOME companies are highly regarded as THE BEST in a particular industry, but that is because they have PROVEN (by their track record) that they have MADE AN EXCELLENT product and they back it up w/ customer support/warranties~ :) THOSE are the companies i trust in...there are going to be "bad batches" with every company, ya just gotta learn to tell which ones~ :)

good luck

I agree, both of my failures from Western Digital came at the 14 month mark back in 1997 or so, after the 1 year warranty expired.
Of course both faced the firing squad. .12 Ga. rifled slugs render the HD completely unreadable.

yeah, i would HOPE so...if you find a company that can do a "data recovery" on those HDs after what you subjected them to, i would LOVE to know~ :) talk about 'bringin back the dead' LOL

it's funny how it's so coincidental how hard drives fail only MONTHs after the "warranty period" provided expires isn't it? LOL there is something THEY know that we apparently do not~ hehehe

we, as consumers, can only do so much...while i do own a few guns myself, i have never tried to dispose of a comp. component using one though, next time something fails...i MIGHT just try it myself~ :) in a secluded, non-public place of course...thanks for the tip blivetNC

Since some of you have used a variety of drives, I have
a question on my Seagates.

I use an older version of Norton Ghost (Ghost 7) which
will back up 2 Western Digital drives quickly but
on the other hand will take forever (4 plus hours)
to backup 2 admittedly larger drives than the
Western Digitals but in no way reflects the amount of
time from date of purchase (where I would transfer data from
a 40 Gb to these larger 120 and 160 respectively.)

I only use the disk to disk option and am not backing
up individual directories which, admittedly, smoother
and faster.

I don't get it.

@Ion
Check here for support software which should enable you to transfer data from your old drive to a new drive, I've used Maxtor's programs to move data and it didn't take more than 45 minutes.

hey doc was thinking of increasing my memory currently only have 512k using intel 3.06 chip and msi motherboard. was wondering what increased memory will do. was thinking of going to 2 gig. had 1 gig stick to go along with 512 stick but it went south early. i do confess that i don't know a lot about memory

Memory upgrades are the cheapest way to boost PC performance. You don't need top of the line OCZ memory, but you shouldn't settle for anything less than Kingston. 2GB is overkill, unless you plan on maxing out everything. You should see what speed your mobo is rated for, and pick up another 512MB stick. http://www.crucial.com is a very reputable site, with quality memory. There is better memory, but you'll end up paying an arm and a leg for it. I've ordered from them with good success. Anyway, that's just my take on it.

I upgraded to 2GB Mushkin based on the Doc's praise of it. Doesn't do a lot for encoding, but I can tell the difference while otherwise multitasking...

as i've said, people will ALL HAVE THEIR PREFERENCES on name brand memory, Crucial is solid and very affordable...Corsair, Mushkin, OCZ are some of the more popular HIGH-END memory (the most important thing is to check the specs of your motherboard and see what SPEED and how much it will be able to accomodate) :)

naturally, if you don't plan on OVERCLOCKING (or if your mobo is not equipped to overclock very well) there really is NO NEED for the expensive high-end memory with the very low latencies...as was stated before, these really do come at a steep price; i regret paying $500+ for (4) four Mushkin 512mb Xtreme L2 v2 cas 2-2-2 ram 3+ years ago, at the time, my motherboard was only able to handle 2gigs MAX ram...motherboards these days can handle 4gigs, yes, it's excessive and overkill, but that's just how i am~ :)

just make sure to read your motherboard manufacturer's manual to see WHICH KIND of memory your specific model mobo/system requires, i'm guessing pc3200...you can naturally use the slower rated pc2700/pc2100 but that will prove to be a bottleneck as far as memory is concerned, but as tokijin stated, it really depends on what you want out of it all...memory upgrades are usually the EASIEST and should be the least expensive part/component you can buy for a performance increase...short of getting a new cpu and different chipset/mobo~ :)

there are MANY diff. memory companies out there, find one that will suit your budget and will meet the specs. as outlined by your mobo requirements...unless you plan on OC'in, don't worry yourself too much with the ultra expensive super low latency sticks or the modules over pc3200 (ddr400)...good luck

docTY~
