My next machine I will build from scratch, so in that one, I'll throw some nice DDR2 memory, maybe some OCZ. I'll also definitely go with an AMD processor and dual channel mobo. Doc's analogy was very apt, people will stand by what works for them when it comes to media or memory. Crucial isn't the best, but it's quality affordable memory, it just depends what you're willing to spend. If I was building one from scratch, I'd go more high end, for my existing rig, it's a perfect fit.

@tokijin
since we're on the topic of memory, i would STRONGLY suggest that in your next build, opt for the DDR memory over that of DDR2 :) while DDR2 is coming "into it's own" recently, test benches after test benches STILL prove that if OC'd properly/timings are correct and on the correct chipset, the DDR larger 1gig sticks STILL outperform the DDR2 in the same size~ :) much like the intel vs amd debate, at THIS time, amd blows intel chips out of the water for the price paid (similar chips in the same price range). in MY OPINION, intel's prescott chips suck a big fat one, heat issues along with poor chipset warrant me to say DON'T get a Prescott chip in the future. the old Northwood chips are MUCH better if you insist on Intel~ :)
a lot of this will vary on which mobo you choose for your next build, just remember DDR and DDR2 are 2 totally different "formats" of memory, they ARE NOT interchangeable between mobo to mobo...your mobo will be specific as to which type it will take, whether it be DDR, DDR2, the old and outdated RDRAM (rambus), sdram, etc...all depending on your motherboard and which it will utilize~ :)
good luck in the future...have a good one buddy

I'm somewhat aware of the differences, such as DDR2 and DDR being totally different as far as what different mobos support, but certainly not expert. My crappy mobo supports DDR, but not DDR2. I wasn't aware of the speed differences in OCing either. I will definitely factor that into my next PC. Thanks for the knowledge.

hehe, my not-so-crappy mobo supports DDR too, but not DDR2 as well~ :) but i CHOSE that quality specifically when i was buying all the parts for my new build~ :)
don't think for a second that if your mobo doesn't support DDR2 that is is "crappy" or "outdated" in any way...there are MANY much more knowledgeable members on here than myself that have tested this whole DDR vs DDR2 theory and i trust their findings...
i will go as far as saying, IF DONE CORRECTLY, an AMD build w/ DDR memory will be FASTER than a Intel Prescott chip w/ DDR2 (comparing the intel/amd EQUIVALENT chip side by side w/ nearly identical mobos supporting DDR and DDR2 respectively) :)
all in due time...with the ever progressing technology sector, and new technologies on the horizon, who knows what the future will bring in terms of MEMORY...in the next 5-10 years, i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if some NEW type of memory is developed that will make all the current memory obsolete, what will they call that new memory? DDR9? DDRx? LOL or a complete new name? only time will tell....

in that thread, namely Sophocles, he's been the one to guide me in the whole OC'in aspect of things as i'm very new to it all~ :) he is a man with a WEALTH of knowledge as his OC' is one of the most impressive ones i've seen thus far...he has years more experience than me and i've followed his suggestions to the T and have gotten my setup to a STABLE very close to 2.5ghz, which is already faster than the 4800+ chip that is a few hundred more in price than my 4400+ x2 :)
brobear is very knowledgeable in the Northwood Intel side of things, as i've had pretty lengthy conversations with him in regards to my Northwood/Gallatin Extreme Edition Intel 3.4ghz :)
i regard BOTH their suggestions with the utmost respect and follow both their advice to much success~ :) there are other members that contribute to that thread, but i don't know any of them; lotta knowledgeable members, just watch out for a few that juss "for the sake of argument" post in there claiming that their Intel Prescotts will rock anything/everyone else's system...that kind of stuff makes me laugh, since in the past i HAVE used Prescott chips in my previous builds, only to sell it a month later since it was a REAL disappointment in my eyes~ :)
just don't believe EVERYTHING you read, everyone has their own "biases" and it's made apparent throughout the thread, that's why i only posted there a few times, i'm not one to take sides, but rather, to learn from those i respect and are truly knowledgeable~ :)
docTY~
p.s. i could care less about the "fan-boy" approach posts that are FOR Intel or AMD, or for Nvidia or ATI...it's about weeding the FACT from the FICTION, there will always be a disagreement as to which is "better" on any scale you wish to compare the two~ :)

that's a very good choice in mobos :0 it's the same one that i am using at this time...and aabbccdd as well~ :) in terms of memory, your DDR memory will work just fine (your RAM), the onboard memory for your video card is something completely different and is NOT affected, whether it be 512mb of DDR, DDR2 or GDDR3, we're talking about a whole different ballpark in terms of memory for video cards~:)
you will find that you have 2 choices for video cards, one in the AGP chipset or one in the newer PCI Express chipset...our particular Asus motherboard requires the PCI-E chipset card (supports up to x16) and will not support the older AGP chipset of video cards...just make sure for your video card you get a "PCI-E" one, and not the AGP version ~ :) your choice between Nvidia or ATI is based on your OWN PREFERENCE between the 2 companies, they BOTH make very good cards, there is really not a "better" one depending on your budget~ :) i happen to use (2) two dual Geforce 6800 ultras PCI-E ran in SLI on my particular setup, it works very well~ :)
for video cards, you will notice that the newer PCI-E ones use "GDDR3" for the memory, whether it be 128mb, 256mb, or the 512mb (high end cards) either way, for you, the most important thing is to be certain that you get a PCI-E card for your new computer, the AGP version of cards will NOT work w/ that mobo~ :)
hope that clarifies a bit and doesn't make things more confusing than it already is...out of curiousity, may i ask what card you decided to go with? make and model number? sounds like a very good video card by the way you are describing it~~ :)

Yes, and thank you very much... I found out that my geforce 5700 will not work- thats O.K. though because it did not have the 3D and new 3.0 shader tech. I bought a PCI for the reason I do not have the money to spend all at once, but could throw another one in later [has to be the same mfg etc.] and should be cheeper[ the second one cause tech is moving so fast].
The one I choose was put on the market late and did not get noticed so to speak...XFX Geforce 6600/512MBDDR2/PCIExpress/SLI/dual DVI/TV out/shader mod. 3.0/ I got it from TigerDirect.com which i was very, very, concerded out because of some stuff i read... had no problems and was shipped in a reasonable time. $136.00 total
Again thank you- new at this... some of you people hearts are truly into teaching- and not up ligting one self.. I have much respect for that because i love to teach in other areas... but more so--I love to learn about tech stuff...

anytime herrick, that's what i'm here for ~ :) have a good one~
so, i assume you are planning to run in SLI for the future? naturally, as you already know, the 2 (two) cards must be identical for you to do so~ :) in your device manager, you will see 2 cards listed in under "display adapters" once you set it up properly~ :)
i started with just 1 (one) eVga geforce 6800 ultra -256mb DDR pci-E, then picked up an identical one on sale from a local retailer for me~ hence, now running the two cards in SLI mode~ i'm not much of a "gamer" so i don't need SUPER HIGH END graphics and such, but i do see a little bit of performance gain running SLI, nothing MIND-BLOWING, but it's noticeable~ :)
we all have to go with the cards that our budget allows, you got a good card there for the price...yah, i agree with you that it wasn't noticed much, but i have a XFX 6600 GT AGP version on one of my older Intel socket 478 builds, paid approx. the same as you after rebate (which i never got btw, LOL) but it's a very good card for the price~ :) yours has double the ram mine does, mine is only 256mb, and also AGP version too~ :) have fun w/ your vid. card, it's a good one~

Sorry for your PC woes, got that worm virus awhile back and nothing got rid of it, just ended up reformating. I made the mistake of plugging my DSL directly into my computer and got hijacked, now I use a router which filters out most of the stuff. Good luck :)
