Off topic, but well worth mentioning, Microsoft has come up with a spyware/malware removal program which actually works, it is called "Windows Defender", free to download at their website. Fixed what adaware, spysweeper and CA EZvirus couldn't fix. I'm happy now.Wife picked up a very naught trojan which launches lots of popups everytime a word is typed in.

From what I been reading Windows Defender is what is going to be included in Vista, guess since they are not releasing this OS now Microsoft is throwing out a hook. By comparison the articles say it works as well as other spyware programs, so if you have one that works you don't need to worry about this one. But in this day and age I suppose you can never have too many spyware removal programs.

Actually, I got the June issue of MaximumPC in the mail yesterday and there is a little blurb article about Microsoft giving up on the malware industy...so Defender may or may not be included in Vista, which is also reported to be delayed again until 2007 (OMG).

This is the article on eweek that they cited, but it doesn't sound like they are throwing in the towel. Who knows....

@Doc

I've popped in on this thread a few times and think it is an excellent source of information. I wanted to thank you and all the other contributors for all the knowledge that is contained on these pages.

The May Smart Computing was dedicated to whether you should run right out there and upgrade to Vista. The ver they were testing included Windows Defender. After reading the articles on Vista, I think I will wait to see how it works, right now it looks like a resource pig.

It will definately be a hog, big and bloated...the way Microsoft likes it. LOL

I was also saddened to see that Skype is in hot water, accused of stealing technology. I'd hate to have to use one of the other services...boo hoo.

NEC's and BenQ's can be permanantly set as well...NEC through the WinGUI interface and BenQ through Q-suite...someone correct me if I'm wrong about the BenQ, I'm looking forward to a new 1655 to see for myself.

I have a BenQ1625 and it bitsets through QSuite, nice little drive. The BenQ1640 is a honey too, if you can get one.

And lightscribe capable...which is what I'd like to look into, as well as having another excellent drive sitting beside my NEC 3540.

My BenQ1625 is lightscribe and it is a nice feature but I would prefer a color feature, which I here is in the future. The greyscale could be a little sharper but it is nice for a change of pace. My older Apex player however does not like the lightscribe disks, but I have no trouble on the newer players.

Well it is nice to have a good burner that does both, and next to my Plextor I like BenQ best. Lately, with so many post in Nero on TSSTCorp drives, it makes me wonder about Toshiba/Samsung, makes you want to stick to the reliable.

Yeah Qsuite is a really nice feature. It auto booktypes all capable programs, so you can just burn your DVD+R's and forget about em, auto DVD-ROM city. If you're paranoid like me, this is a very nice bonus. It also enables overspeed, WOPC, and SolidBurn.

Probably what all the delay is with the OS. The Motion Picture, Recording Industry and Microsoft are all really going to make it tough. I don't think I will line up to buy this one, lol.

My BenQ DW1650 will book type to DVD-ROM! You can have lightscribe, not impressed with the few I've done on my LG. Maybe when color is available. The gold Verbs I lightscribed were not good. You can also set the booktype in decrypter as well as Qsuite.

hehe, good info all regarding windows defender as well as various articles about windows Vista, i've actually tried the latest beta revision of Vista on my older Intel setup, i can tell you first hand that i dumped it after about a week of using it~ :)

not only is it a resource hog, as pointed out earlier, there are a few other "quirks" that really bothered me when i was running it...i noticed it defintely slowed down my system (compared to winxp pro w/ sp2 which i'm running now) and i have 2gigs of Mushkin L2 V2 XP Extreme DDR ram (4 sticks of 512mb), with aggressive timings of cas latency 2, memory timings 2-2-2; still noticed a slowdown by comparison to winxp pro :)

anyways, suffice it to say, i reformatted my hd and went back to a fresh install of winxp pro~ :) i'll let all those guinea pigs use Vista before i'll personally consider it again when it's finally released for the general public by Microsoft~ :P

@taiyouser

if you are going to go with a Liteon, i've had good success with the SOHW-1693S, which is another drive that i use on my other computer, i also have the older SOHW-1633S (which is good, but pretty old and it's firmware updates are pretty lacking) :) i don't have the NEWEST Liteon's available today, but just wanted to let you know that i have had good experiences with those 2 models i mentioned above. booktyping can be done a variety of diff. ways, but i happen to use the Liteon booktyping utility found here:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/Download/utility/BookType135.zip

the quality scans are pretty good for the DVD+R format, only to be edged out by my Benq drives in that format (1640, 1650) :) i found my particular Pioneer, the dvr-109, to like the DVD-R format better...but, as you mentioned, you want a good DVD+R format drive w/out lightscribe and dvd-ram~ :) there ya have it~ my OPINION as to what will work for you in the Liteon flavor...

docTY~

Yeah if you don't want MS controlling your download and browsing habits, avoid VISTA like the black plague.
