Hi everyone!

I have some questions that i would like to ask.First it's about solidburn,does this feature apply only to BenQ burners?I don't have any BenQ burners,instead i'm actually using the pioneer DVR-111EXL to burn my recently found Verbs(taiyo ones) DVD+R 8x.i've been burning some AVI.format data on these Verbs.I've read that in some cases while activating the solidburn it does help in some way but the problem is that i can't find that option.can someone explain this to me?
All what i've burned(only AVI.format datas till now) play well on the same pioneer.The only thing that intrigues me is that i just made a Nero CD-DVD speed test and the quality score is kind of disaster(Quality score:83,PI errors rate and PI failures rate quite high!!!).By the way,i use Nero to burn.

And what about booktype?where can i activate this setting?Can't see it anywhere?But i remember burning some crap DVD+R medias in the past using Nero and these medias booktyped automatically to DVD-ROM.

Can someone please explain to me well in details how to do to achieve better results while running Nero CD-DVD speed test?

I've been able to get my hands on these Taiyo babies and now i really want to know how to exploit them to the max!and not just burn them as i used to do in the past.I guess it's great time for me to start to move forward by learning from others.The first step i already made it as i no longer use crap medias,as i said before from now on it's only and will always be Taiyo medias!!!!

See you all later!!!

@TY4ever

first off, the feature of "SolidBurn" as called by Benq is only found using the QSuite utility that Benq offers for Benq drives, other manufacturers have their own utilities also, but so far, out of the drives that i personally own, only my Benq's can use this QSuite feature~ :) Pioneer burners do not have such a feature to my knowledge~ :P

2ndly, Pioneer burners are HORRIBLE at scanning...couldn't do it correctly if their life depended on it...perfect example of this is shown here by ME in this thread :

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/4/330512

i scanned the SAME DISC on my Benq, then on my Pioneer...a picture is worth a thousand words...LOL

you think YOUR scan was a disaster, look at mine and then see how you feel~ :) i got a 25 score, beat that!

lastly, while i'm not familiar with the NEWEST of Pioneer drives as i have the old dvr-109 model, Pioneers DO NOT BOOKTYPE using official firmware, it is only using hacked firmware to make this possible...i use Buffalo firmware from Japan cross-flashed to v8.58 to booktype all my dvd+r media to dvd-rom when burning on my Pioneer... :) i'm in a rush right now, but unless Pioneer changed their builds/firmware from the last 2 models, you will not be able to booktype unless a hacked firmware is used; a lil more research into the the dvr-111 you can find out if it does booktype using official firmware now, but i don't know off the top of my head...i DO KNOW that the Pioneer 111 DOES SUPPORT AUTO DVD+R DL bitsetting, but most likely NOT for single layer dvd+r that you are currently using... :(

in the scanning dept., using nero cd-dvd speed, u are unfortunately up the creek to get accurate scans...Pioneers are great drives in MY opinion, but one of THE WORST at scanning...period.

Fuji 16x -R

MBI 03RG40..
ProdiscF02..
RITEKF1.....

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?dvdmediasearch=fuji&dvdmedi...

I got some of these and they coded out as the ProdiscF02, they burned and scanned fine, not as good as TY or Verbatim but they came up as Very Good vs. the Excellent I get on the latter.

@Movies27, the spindle of Fuji I bought from B.J.s Wholesale club a couple of months ago came out as the Riteks, no problems with them so far. However, I did get ahold of a 50 pack of the MIJ 16X Sony Disks (White octagonal spaer) from Office Depot, they were out of the Office Depot DL disks, but I had to look anyways, only one spindle and it called out my name from the back of the third shelf.....

Thanks Doc!Guess that i did not buy the right drive to test the Taiyo discs.But if i'm gonna buy another drive in the future,the BenQ DW1650 it will be.If i'm right you and our frindly moderator Creaky use the DW 1650 and obtain good score.It's really incredible how many things can be learned in this thread!!!

But what are the other drives unlike the pioneer DVR-111EXL which can give a more fair score to my Taiyo verbs?Do you have any idea if LG drives namely the 4163B and 4167B or even the Plex PX-760A gives better score reading?(concerning the LG drives,i guess Creaky will be in a better situation to answer my question as you said to me that in the past he used to have these two drives,so please Creaky can you say something about that?)

After seeing your score of 25 on your pioneer,guess that i don't need to worry so much about mine,it's just that pioneer drives and the Nero disk quality scan test kind of hate each other.Unbelievable how drives can give so different score!

Have a nice day to all of ya!

@movies27

my bad, didn't mean to take it out on u...i guess the correlation between the former TYG02s in the 8x DVD-R MIGHT lead you to believe that the 16x would be the TYG03s...this is NOT the case unfortunately...a fair question, i just took it the wrong way at the time..my apologies :)

@TY4ever

no worries, yeah, creaky would be better suited to tell you more about the LGs, i don't currently own one, so i wouldn't know~ :)

the Plextors have their own scanning system..using Plextools...so, no problems on scanning there on your 760 :)

good luck

The LG's do not support error reporting, therefore, they are not reliable "scanners." However, they are EXCELLENT "writers!" I have the 5163D, which is the external version of the 4163B that Creaky loves... The LG burns as well as my 109 (which is definitely among the best), is faster, and is as quiet as a mouse!!! You might find some TYG02's in MIJ Fuji 8x or Sony 8x but otherwise online is best. I use online for my TY's as I do not have to hunt for them retail, anything MIJ is non-existent in my area. If I want to use Retail media I will by Verbatim, it is just as good as the TY. Just my 2 cents, the Doc can correct me if I am wrong :)

the fujifilm DVD-R will most likly code out as prodisc which is mid to low grade media ,i wont touch them iam with pete i get all my Taiyo Yuden online being MIJ media in this area is very hard to find.

the LG burners are good Lite-On are better though(both work with the Nero scanning tools) and the Plextor are top end, BTW the PX-716As are "end of life" on the Plextor site

Is the new plex PX-760A not good?They did not have the PX-716a at the time i went to buy a new burner and got a good deal with the latest one($97).

And good to hear that LG burners are ok with Nero scanning tools.

Sorry to burst your bubble about LG burners I have an LG external 1266D. Got Christmas and it does NOT support Nero quality scan part of scan tools, It was one reason I added a third burner, the BQ 1650. But like aabbccdd said LG is an excellent reader-writer.

i see that more and more people are using the BenQ burners namely the DW-1650.

If it's so good as it seems,i think i'm gonna find a buyer for my LG burner(the new unused one,LG-4167B) and buy the BenQ DW-1650.

Why not use both of them? I am using my LG to rip and my BQ to burn. The BQ doesn't like Fuji DL discs(I didn't buy them, gift), the LG burns them fine. If you get the BQ 1650 get the QSuite to go with it; free download.

@TY4ever,

Stop using Nero (or anything else) for burning ... download "IMGBURN" and start using this software to burn ... you be surprised at your results and speed of burning ... and it has Bitsetting built into it.

Also, what it has worked for me is to back up my dvd as an "ISO" image file first and THEN use ImgBurn to burn it.

@docTY,

Do you get error when scanning your DVD+Rs using CD-DVD Speed test!?!?! Mine never goes through all the way ...
Q1: Is this a function of DVD+R discs or what?

docTY ... I use DVD-Rs because they are the only ones that come in Valueline. DVD+Rs are also more pricey! Is there a source to get TY DVD+Rs as cheap as TY DVD-Rs?

Thanks!

TY4ever,

You can't go wrong with the Benq DW1650 or DW1655. They are both also very fast rippers. Although light-ons are also good drives for scanning (you can use them with Nero scandisc or kprobe) and I really like my litey, my benq 1650 rips pressed dvd9's about 3-4 minutes faster than my litey.

I believe what aabbccdd meant by the px716 being end of life on the plextors is they were the last good plextor to be made. They changed chipsets on the 740-755 series and the 760's haven't been as reliable.

gonwk ,no not online BUT if you can find Sony or Fujifilm DVD+R 8x that are "Made In Japan" they will code out as Taiyo Yuden, you have to search your locals stores to find them but they do price the the DVD-R and the DVD+R at the same price in store

I think you can still purchase from Plextor, but it will be full price. Sad to see they did away with this one, I guess the are just promoting their 760 model, because the 740 was a rebadged BenQ. I certainly hope they plan on giving some support for the 716 for awhile yet, since mine are not that old, also they do not have any other external offering in the 760, only the 740. Last time the updated the fw was quite awhile ago, it could stand one.

actually, no, i don't get any errors when scanning dvd+rs using nero's cd-dvd speed test...that is a peculiar issue you are having with the scanning..what version of nero cd-dvd speed are you using? as you can see from my scan above on the YUDEN000T02s, everything went all the way through to completion and it has a 99 quality score to boot!

as to the dvd+r pricing, the others have already suggested the local selections for the YUDEN000T02s, they are getting very difficult to find nowadays for MANY people across the United States...seems like only the MIT are abundant locally in stores, but it is a fact that both dvd-r and dvd+r are the SAME PRICE locally...only more expensive online for the dvd+r~ :)

i happen to get my TYs directly from Taiyo Yuden, so i save quite a bit in the dvd+r format over most people that order online...i'm not a wholesale media dealer in any shape/way/form so unfortunately, i can not offer individual sales to people here due to my time restraints...sorry~ :(

from most online retailers, i've noticed the TY dvd+r format starts at around $0.39/each and goes up from there...$0.48/each for the 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03s from rima.com (the ONLY reliable place that currently has the 16x dvd+r TYs in stock at this point)...too pricey for me to buy a lot of them and even though i swear by TYs for MY OWN backups, i am not willing to pay close to $0.50 each for them...

@all

good info regarding the various burners here, glad some people with experience with the LGs chimed in and the plextor users too~, i'm also a fan of Liteon myself and have very good success with my older models, everyone should already know i rank my Benq 1650 as the "best bang for the buck" at this point in time...worth every cent of it's VERY inexpensive price, once it gets settled, using TYs, i wouldn't be the least bit surprised that ya'll get 98-99 quality scores like i do...burning @8x of course :) thanks~

the Fuji DLs are the RitekD01s that everyone seems to complain about, i mentioned a few hundred pages back j/k LOL that Benqs do NOT burn to them successfully, an easily missed post since most people look for the Verbatim dvd+r DLs at this point in time~ :) much like the success you have burning using your LG burner, my Liteons as well as my Pioneer and NEC don't have problems with the RitekD01 DLs either...it's just the Benqs that are NOT too fond of them~ :) proper firmware is IMPORTANT for the success of RitekD01s :)
have gone through 1/2 dozen flashings w/ various cross-flashes to find the ones that WORK WELL w/ the RitekD01s on my drives...i don't know if the Benqs will EVER like the Ritek dvd+r DLs, perhaps in the future with newer firmware updates to incorporate a proper MID table/settings...i hope it will be soon~

Yeah was really surprised when I saw that I had 3 of those Fuji DLs but even more so when BQ refused to burn them. A small annoyance from a great burner. It loves the Verb DLs.
