Quote: Yeah was really surprised when I saw that I had 3 of those Fuji DLs but even more so when BQ refused to burn them. A small annoyance from a great burner. It loves the Verb DLs.
yes, the Benqs SURE DO LOVE the Verb DLs though~ :) my best scans have been from using my Benq1640/1650 so far on the Verbatim DVD+R DLs (MKM001 MID coding) :) i totally agree with you, it's just a minor annoyance from an otherwise well-rounded/great burner :)

Pete looks like the Premium line is still looking good with the Plextors ,the PX-716SA sata drive is still going to be around and its an 8mb memory the PX-760 and most the others are only 2mb memory though
http://www.plextor.com/english/products/product_dvdrw_drives.html
remember all the Plextors are very fond of Taiyo yuden blank media since thats the brand Plextor uses to test there drives!!!

Quote: If i'm right you and our frindly moderator Creaky use the DW 1650 and obtain good score.
- i've got two DW1650's in use now, i had bought one as a spare but my other LG let me down so the Benq is now on active duty...
Quote: Do you have any idea if LG drives namely the 4163B and 4167B or even the Plex PX-760A gives better score reading?(concerning the LG drives,i guess Creaky will be in a better situation to answer my question as you said to me that in the past he used to have these two drives,so please Creaky can you say something about that?)
- re LG drives i've had 2 4167B's go bad on me and up until recently my 4163B has been a sterling performer, but recently my TY burns were failing on the 4163B (different types of TY, different spindles etc) so i knew something was up; a smidgen of troubleshooting showed the 4163B was the culprit, so it got put aside to be used as a cd burner or dvd-rom drive on a future PC. Haven't had any of the LG drives that long, but i won't be buying any more in future. However my trusty ripper drive is an LG dvd-rom/cd burner combo (4480B) that's about 3yrs old and has ripped many 1000s of discs faultlessly. As to scores i can't remember but i vaguely recall LG drives don't support quality scanning (which if anyone knows me will know i put very little faith in quality scanning anyway).

I too don't do much scanning and rely on playback, or if I can rerip them. If I don't get a CRC error and the rip is smooth, then to me that says the disk is fine.

Hey gurnard, how you doing, hope the fishing is good. Since I have never been able to get the Nero CD/DVD Speed test or DVDInfo Pro test to work on either of my Dells, trying 4 different drives, I just gave up on them and trusted the play/watch/rip test. I now have my PlexTools for my Plextors which will scan well, but sometimes it just isn't worth the effort, other than to test out new media. But if you are using what is trusted and known to be good I don't worry.

Hi Doc:
Remember me, your old PAL alan, I was wondering if you know the best batch numbers on the Yuden000-T03-000 for BenQ 1655 burners. I have some that end in 21 but they are not burning as well as the old 8X Yuden000-T02-000 when I overspeed them to 16X with QSuite 2.1. I just built a new rig, Specs are in my sig. Check it out.

Which plextor drives are you curentlly using(model)?Just want to know as i'll be a bit worried if i know that i'm the only one who has the PX-760A.And i don't know anyone on this thread who says having that latest model.All i ever heard is the PX-716 ones which are said to be the best ones in the Plextor burner range.
Or at least does anyone know someone or some people who are actually totally satisfied with their new 760 drive?
On my side i'm not worrying too much about quality of my backups as i use the Taiyo Verbs.If the scan makes my life a hell,i guess that i'll skip it and i'll be the play/watch/rip guy too!!!
Vincent.

I have an internal Plex 716a and an external 716UF. In regard to the 760a the review from CDR Labs is good, although it does state in the cons of the drive that it will balk at some media and slowdown, which is something that I find is true of mine. You can read the review, I am sure you made a good choice and will be happy with the Plextor. Every drive/computer has it peculiarities that the user gets used to. As for scanning use PlexTools it does several different kinds of scans which are equal to Nero's.

hi buddy, of course i remember u~ :) LOL
as to the "best" batch numbers, i would have to say creaky has MORE experience on the YUDEN000T03s than i do, i only have 2 spindles of them at this point and they are both the same batch numbers...i've been getting DECENT scores, but, admittedly, my 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s are consistently higher...i frequently get 99 scores on my 8x TYs :)
i still burn my 8x YUDEN000T02s @ 8x, i do have Benq burners that give me good scores burning higher with Overspeed enabled, but i just stick w/ burning @8x since that is my "sweet spot" personally on my computer~ :)
i noticed your new system, nice setup, i am using that same ASUS mobo on my main rig right now too~ suffice it to say, i'm more than familiar with the BIOS settings and all the features at this point if you plan on overclocking your processor...aabbccdd will attest to my statement of being "familiar" with the A8N32-Sli mobo~ :)
if ya need help w/ overclocking, if you choose to do so, i can be helpful to you if need be... :)
sorry i can't offer more personal experiences to the YUDEN000T03s, i'm limited in my usage of them too because MY prices for them directly from TY is still "too high" for my liking~ :) so i have a very limited supply of them, i can go on all day about YUDEN000T02s though, an especially good batch of mine are the TG001159 inner hub coding~ :) i got that particular batch in BOTH the unbranded TYs shiny silvers as well as the Sony branded MIJ ones, both proved to be excellent batches :)

@DocTY,
Yeah right. Ken you are so full of yourself. I'm only joking of course. We all know you are da man regarding TY media. I don't know that my benq burns any better than my litey but it sure does rip pressed dvd9's faster. 3-4 minutes faster on average. Always good chatting with you buddy. You know me I've just got to give you some grief.
I'm glad to hear you got that monster pc screamin. Do you think it will outperform the opteron 170 or 175? Anyways give me a jingle after the 4th and we'll chat somemore. I don't know what about but I'm sure we'll find something. A good evening to all.

no problem~, i help when i can, take it slow...at your own pace, nobody really needs to RUSH in OC'in especially since you just got your system...let it "burn in/break in" a bit before pushing it further hehehe :)
as to the TYG03s vs TYG02s, i've always had more success with the 8x rated TYG02s compared to my 16x rated TYG03s, that's just MY experiences, some people have very good results with the TYG03s, but unfortunately, i'm not one of them LOL

LOL, hehehe i'm a cocky SOB aren't i? hehehehe...anyways, all in good natured fun, i like the occassional bashing since we are good friends, it def. put a smile on my face tonight :)
in terms of outperforming an overclocked opty 170 or 175, most probably NOT if you are referring to Soph's setups...LOL, the opty have much better binning than my x2...i'm happy with mine, it's GOOD ENUFF :) now if i were to get a good stepping/revision on an opty (if i choose to buy one in the future), it would be very close...
will def. ring ya up post Independence Day, i'll be interested to hear how ur trip went and i hope all is good w/ ur family~ :) Happy Early July 4th to you and your kin...

despite the media identifier and it's coding, at this point without me actually looking at the disc, i would suggest you check around the hub (near the circular hole in the middle) for the following laser inscribed coding : "TG00xxxx" (where xxxx is a numerical value) :)
IF you see it just outside the hub area, then you got some genuine Taiyo Yudens, IF YOU DO NOT SEE THIS NUMBER, then you got some fakes~ :) also, to verify that these are genuine or not, is there any indication on the packaging itself stating what country they are from??? if it's MIT (made in taiwan) definitely FAKE TYs, if it's MIJ, good possibility they are authentic...
the DVD+R format is less frequently faked than the DVD-R, if we determine this IS A FAKE (using the method i asked for above), then this is one of the RARE YUDEN000T02 "fakes" i have actually had to deal with...therefore adding another "brand" to my "fake TY list" :)
let me know when u have time, check inner hub coding as mentioned, also a good indication would be country of origin (where it was manufactured- should say on the wrapper on the spindle)...that's all for now~

Thanks for the info. I found these dvds both +r and -r in other shop too and the guy told me it's from china. nothing is written on the paper where it comes from. There is something written outside the inner circle but it's so damn small that i need a magnifier glass, which i don't have. will try to find a magnifier glass and see what it it's written. OR if you want i can take a picture and post it tommorow here. I also will go to the university shop and ask from where it is made. It could be that different shops bring from different countries. Because they don't mention it on the paper. Only on tdk, verbatim it's written made from .... and write the web site.
I also got another dvd from a friend who lived in japan. his dvd is white (nothing written on top), but behind (after the inner transparent circle)i can see gg000095 (or maybe it's tg00095. will take a picture of this too and post it). I can't buy those. And here is the dvd identifier of him:

hehe, ur friend's TYG02 is authentic...i can tell right away since you mentioned the GG000xxx coding around the inner hub :) the TG000xxx coding i mentioned is SPECIFIC to your 8x DVD+R media, the 8x DVD-R format will have the GG000xxx coding :P
my first post in this thread tells you which inner hub coding is to be found on each rated speed and format of disc~ :)
from the sounds of it, if your City Disc is made in China, i can almost 100% GUARANTEE you that they are FAKE Taiyo Yudens, sorry to be the bearer of bad news...
if you can visually see the inner hub coding on your friend's TYG02s and that GG000xxx coding, it is laser inscribed THE VERY SAME WAY on the 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s but with a "TG" prefix rather than a "GG" :) if it's not inscribed the same size and same lettering (font) then it's fake~ :)
i'm assuming you have both discs in your possession...the inner hub coding will be in the SAME location on both discs, if it's near impossible to see the one from the YUDEN000T02 disc in question, good chance it's FAKE (assuming you could see the GG000xxx coding from the TYG02 disc, despite it being white full inkjet printable Taiyo Yuden) :)
hope that clarifies for ya, if the disc you said is MADE IN CHINA, that is a DEAD GIVEAWAY that they are NOT genuine Taiyo Yudens~ :)

@Doc TY
After reading your reply above I checked the Sonys that DVD identifier said were TY02s. The number(barely discernable)on the inner most ring is RF527B501137PG. These are the famous Sony 8X MIJ with white octagonal spacer. Are these fakes, and if so, why would Sony make fake TYs or place their label on fake TYs? These all were bought at Sam's Club. Cause I got about 250 more of the suckers! An earlier TDK stack that was coding out as TY02s has its number PHH650JH221 13323 3. All of these discs burn flawlessly.

Both of my Sony 16 X TY's have GH00125 near the inner hub, and in raised plastic stamping ka623a103672gk right on the inner rim. Garmon, look at the borger between the clear and the paint, the number should be reversed, (Mirror image)My Fuji 8X TYG02 start with TG0011XX numbers.

@blivetNC
Thanks man, the Sonys are TG001162 and the TDKs are TG001133, the real deals.
Edit: I had to get a magnifying glass to read them. Never would have seen them if you hadn't told me where to look.

A lot prefer the TY +Rs because (if your burner can) they are book-typeable to DVD-ROMs. That's why I use +Rs. On line TY-Rs are cheaper than +RS are, but I get my TYs from store as Sonys MIJ. Doc Ty likes his 8X over his 16X TYs. You probably shouldn't burn a DVD over 8X anyway.

uscunc,
Your px-716 is capable of bitsetting in case you want to take advantage of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom. You will find the setting in plextools. Booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom fools your set top dvd players into thinking your burned dvd's are pressed store bought dvd's. Bitsetting will only work with DVD+R media and will not affect DVD-R media in any way.
