uscunc , i use the dvd dash r most the time being there less expensive online than the dvd plus r ,they say the dvd plus r more stable though . stick with the TYGO2s 8x over the TYGO3 16x better over all results ,heres some reading on dvd dash vs. dvd plus r

@garmoon
glad you found the "inner hub" coding as mentioned, i admit my wording on the term and where to actually FIND the readings is a bit ambiguous/vague, sorry bout that~ :) glad blivetNC came to the rescue and got it sorted out...nicely done buddy~
anyways, i have some unbranded Taiyo Yudens with the same "batch number" (inner hub coding) as you, they proved to be excellent discs, while i only have 1 spindle of TDK branded TYs (that my close friend gave me to check for him, but never took them back after he was "burned" by TDK's own media, hence part of my own reason why i refuse to use TDK's own "TTG01/TTG02/TTH01/etc" media) :)
anyways, i just need to watch how i "word" the "inner hub" coding part of checking for authentic TYs, i guess it's better said, "not the innermost part of the hub, but a little ways out mirror-image laser inscribed coding" LOL i dunno~ :) we all live and learn...
have a good one all~ :)
@uscunc
the good members here have given their recommendations on that plextor 716a you have, not much more i can add to that :P

Welp guess you all (wow i must be down there close to blivet,YOU"ALL)lol... you have helped me make my mind up on my new burner i was leaning toward the plextor755 also but the 716 looks to be the better of the 2... plus i can get it for $65 at my local microcenter...
@docTY..im still looking everywhere for them 16x TY's just about everyone has the 16x+r mij sony's but from what a few friends of mine are saying they are not TY's.. did i hear you correct that TDK also can be found with the MIJ ty's??? i need to start looking at all the media for MIJ instaed of just a few brands..
as my problem before with me getting the pixles on some of my burns that we tal;ked about i slowed my burn speed down to 6x on my 16xverbs and 4x on the 8x maxell and they have come out great. my burner might say 16x but to get a quality burn im staying at 6 and 4 times.. unless of course i am useing the MIJ sony's:)~

SO FAR, from the reports coming in, the 16x DVD+R MIJ Sonys are NOT Taiyo Yuden made, i have not actually picked up any myself personally yet to verify this, but i am willing to say that all these members can't be wrong in that they are SONY made... :)
whether or not the Sony 16x DVD+R MIJ can be found with the white octagonal spacer as mentioned by others, i don't know firsthand...
with the TDKs MIJ 16x DVD+R, i haven't found any (locally on sale) yet, part of the reason is i haven't really been looking, i know that circuit city and a few other retailers frequently has sales on TDK media but the nearest circuit city is so far away from me locally, that it's just not worth the gas $$ for me to drive there... :)
they COULD be TYs or they could NOT be, 50-50 chance of it being either...if someone does take the chance and try them out when on sale, i'd like to know as well~ :)
i know the MIT 16x DVD+R TDks are CMC MAGs and i've even seen the MID coding of "TDK003" too (but don't know the country of origin)...
so far, i have NOT seen ANY Sony 16x DVD+R as being Taiyo Yuden produced, regardless if it's MIJ, but with many of these companies, manufacturers could change at a moment's notice, so maybe...

Find all of those you can buddy, because the are sweet and now hard to find. Have had no issues and have burned about 50 of those.
To all
Office Depot has a sale for three days (starting today) with their store brand stack of 100 16X for $19.95. Are those still coding out as Ritek 03s like the 8X ones? My daughter uses those and they are good discs also.

if i'm not mistaken, the Office Depot 16x DVD-R are the RitekF1 coded ones and the 16x DVD+R are the RicohjpnR03s or RitekP16, both made in taiwan :)
a few members have had decent success with these, but i believe they had MORE success with the older 8x rated Riteks, as is GENERALLY true when comparing 8x rated media to that of the 16x rated media for nearly ALL manufacturers :) (it's cuz of the firmware from the drive manufacturers, they haven't perfected the MID tables and write strategies for the 16x, whereas most drive firmwares got the 8x rated discs down pretty well)

Thanks a lot. I tried to see the code on these city disk and couldn't. I can compare with the dvd from japan. On the japan dvd i can see the code with just simple vision glass. The city disk doesn't have a code in the same inner circle. There is some very small code in the transparent part which i tried to see even with my digital camera and couldn't. So, as you say, probably fake. BTW, they sell city disk as + and - r.
I asked around from which country it is made. they don't know. they assume it's china because lots of things come from china/taiwan. Even the tdk, they don't write where it's made (but at least you have the official web site written, etc).
BUT, i didn't buy any of these city disk. i wanted to be sure first it's not fake.
I wish i could buy from all those supermediastore or rima. They don't ship to Israel.
I saw they sell online Fuji DVD-R 8x and they claim it's manufactured by tayo yunden and it's made in japan. Fuji outsource to tayo yunden?

they most certainly do in the 8x speed MADE IN JAPAN is a MUST for that statement to be accurate~ :)
i got plenty of Fuji branded MIJ TYG02s, authentic Taiyo Yudens...
as to your city discs, it's not that they are PROBABLY fake, THEY ARE FAKE, i'm 100% sure of it...you said you checked in the same spot comparing side by side to your authentic Taiyo Yuden made in japan...if you can see it (inner hub code i was referring to just outside the transparent part right before the dye part begins) fairly easily on the made in japan TYG02, but not so on the city disc, that is the definitive "stake into the heart" that the city disc is without a shadow of a doubt, NOT AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yuden, or more simply put...FAKE :)
glad you didn't buy any, good decision u made there~ :)
if the online retailer that you are buying from can GUARANTEE that the Fuji brand 8x DVD-R are MADE IN JAPAN, those will be Taiyo Yudens...

They claim on the web site, made in japan. People wrote good reviews about that shop. BUT, I check, to be sure. So, i dared and emailed them, maybe they can send me a sample. They sell both +r and -r. the -r is cheaper than the +r. On the +r they say it's written on the box made in japan.
Can you take a look at these web sites and tell me what you think. I will probably want to buy the -r due to price (they don't have in stock right now).
http://www.lira.co.il/site/viewProduct.php?pid=261&cat=24 (that's for the -r)
http://www.lira.co.il/site/viewProduct.php?pid=262&cat=31 (that's for the +r)

well, from what i can actually discern from that site, since i can't read the font/language that it is in...the website DOES list the description details to include the MID(media coding) TYG02 coding for the 8x DVD-R and the YUDEN000T02 coding for the 8x DVD+R, i honestly can't make out what everything else says, sorry... :)
if this online retailer SUPPORTS it's claims that you will get exactly what they stated in the product description/details, then yes, i would say go for it...i'm not sure about the pricing as i don't know the conversion rate to U.S. dollars, so is 146.00 and 175.00 reasonable price??? or is that pretty expensive over there? :P

@cincyrob
imma have to check my microcenter here in my area (about an hour drive for me) to see if they have any Plextors 716s on sale, if it's $65 each for them brand new retail, you can be assured i will pick up 3 for myself for later use~ :) and then can finally say i OWN A PREMIUM PLEXTOR! hahahahha

145 nis is 32.37$ with rate exchange 4.4792506945 which is 0.64$ per dvd. 175 nis is 39.14$ which is 0.79$ per dvd. I guess it's much higher than in usa. verbatim they usually sell here at 0.66$ per dvd. I had nice experience with verbatim on my nec 6500a dvd burner. tdk gave me troubles. it burned only at x4. right now this shop have a nice deal with verbatim. AND, unfortunately they don't have in stock fuji.
would like to get a sample of tayo yunden to see the codings and how it burns.

best of luck q12300, i hope they will send you a few samples to try out, guess we have it pretty good over here in the U.S. with a fairly good selection of media to choose from and MUCH cheaper prices~ :)
i've never in my life paid that much for a single layer media b4 here, the MAXIMUM i've ever paid for single layer, regardless of brand/manufacturer is < $0.50/each (after CA sales tax + shipping)...dual layers, on the other hand, i've paid close to $3.00 each when they were still relatively new to the market~ :)

Do you happen to know which online sellers send abroad too? If you don't Maybe you can post few links to reliable sellers and i will ask them if they send abroad. rima doesn't send. meritline could be expensive after all, because it looks like they want wire transfer. WHICH is a lot. I wait for their answer.

I never really knew how to get these numbers you guys come up with on these ty disc's, finally I looked hard and yes its on the disc, even with my reading glasses I could'nt see them, but with a magnified glass and if you look at it on a certain angle there it was, TG001162 whatever that means, learn something at AD every day.
Any, can somebody please explain to me what OC,ing means, thanks.

OC,
Overclocking, souping up your CPU to run faster than its intended settings. Loads of info all over the net regarding the who, what how and when. just go to google, type in overclocking and the name of your processor and you'll be inundated with info. AD also has freat forums on overclocking as well. Never tried it, hear there is additional cooling requirements involved, but DocTY is a good start to ask about certain combos.
Good Luck

blivet,
Depends on how much you want to OC. Stock cooling will work ok on mosts rigs for mild OC. You can get a good h/s and fan though for under $50.

Haha!!!
Looks like the TG001162 inner hub coding is a good batch after all.
I think i'll go get some more of these Taiyo verbs from that same store before it's too late!
Btw,what's the safest way to upgrade a drive's firmware?I never did so on my actual burner and i heard some people say that it's quite complicated and risky(can make the drive unusable if not properly installed).
Vincent.
