Thank you about the oc info, and TY4 I know what you mean about upgrating firmware, I to was warned about it about a year ago when I made my first purchase of TY disc's, 200 pack with the same number I gave previously, I remeber when I first tried to use them for some reason it would'nt write, I did get info from people at AD to upgrade firmware, was told where to find it for my drive (Philips6002DVDRW) a dinasaur but still works great, how to do it, but with a warning, I guess if you know what your doing it's probably pretty simple, if not, like me, I don't know, I didnt want to take a chance, but anyway after several more try's with ty for some reason it started working and have never had problems since, I have been burning with just about every media out there for about 5 years now, never a problem, even with all those that everybody claims that suck like memorex etc. and of course after bieng with AD for about a year now that's all I buy is ty now, the only one that ever gave me a problem was about a year ago I bought 2 50 packs o Sony from bestbuy DVD+R, to this day they will not burn, I know maybe they would if I did upgrade my drive, but you know what, I'd rather just chalk the sony's as a loss and just keep going the way things are, thus meaning saying I guess if it aint broke don't fix it.

@aabbccdd

what?that's all i need to do to upgrade my drive's firmware?Just run the file after dowloading it from the drive's official webpage and just follow the instructions(if have)?If so,then i guess it won't be that so hard for me to do it then.

But some people say that i need to close all the applications which use a lot of memory(like antivirus,firewall,etc...)and also that the drive's jumper in question should be set to master.What do you think about that?

I'm not saying that they are right but between them and you guys in AD,i guess you are much much more experienced than those who said these stuffs to me,so i'm gonna follow your instructions about that.

TY4ever,

It's very easy. Just be sure you select the correct drive if you have more than one, make sure there is no disc in the drive, and don't power down during the firmware flash.

Updating firmware is way too easy, just make sure that you have the correct update for your burner, and that the PC doesn't get turned off in mid upgrade, that's all there is to it.
Download it, install it, and you are good to go.

@ty4ever

I've flashed 2 drives(BenQ 1650 and TDK440N) with jumpers set to cable select(most Dell PC burners are) and one on a USB connection(LG)no problems These guys know what they are talking about.

@DocTY

Absolutely 100% correct about the Office Depot's X16 +Rs RicohJPN-R03-004 and

the OD X8 +Rs are Ritek-R03-002. Which leads to this question. Are Ricoh and Ritek the same or related?

Wow, you guys make it sound so easy, ok, a couple of questions than, what if after updating the firmware susesfully, than let say for example maybe like burning my movies like I always had and my dvd players dont except my copies anymore, I'm only asking this is because I heard a couple of people say that, now if they knew what they were talking about I dont know, but if something like that did happin, would I be able to set it back the way it was?

do you know if they tend to send out samples to average joes like us? i requested some of them 16x+rs to sample. was curious as to if they reply to the average guy or do we need to be a guru like yourself...lol.... sorry if posting that site was wrong wont happen again
i really don't know if they will, i have never actually tried myself to request some samples from their main website...lol...no worries, you can post that site ALL you want in my thread, that IS the parent company of what this whole discussion/thread is based upon! no worries... :)

if you do actually obtain samples, lemme know how they respond to you, i would actually be surprised if they do for free :)

@garmoon

as to the differences between Ritek and Ricohjpn, they are 2 separate entities...Ritek is a Taiwanese company and Ricoh is a Japanese company; however, when it comes to media, it's debateable depending on user and drives WHICH of the two are actually "better"/higher quality... MANY users have had countless untold stories about great success with Ricohjpn's older 4x media, those same Ricoh fans then downplay the 8x rated discs, but once again pick up the flag and carry the praises of Ricohjpn in their 16x media~ :) you will get a variety of responses depending on WHO you ask about experiences with Ricoh vs Ritek~ :)

personally, i've had success with BOTH companies, there were the "bad batches" in each that i've encountered, but otherwise i would put them on the SAME LEVEL...what MAY confuse people is the whole "ricohJPN" media ID coding, Ricoh is a JAPANESE company, however, their media is predominantly MADE IN TAIWAN, sometimes IN Ritek's factories under Ricoh quality specifications...

very few companies these days actually MANUFACTURER their media IN JAPAN...taiyo yuden and hitachi (maxell MIJ) being the 2 most predominant ones, the largest facilities in dvd media are IN TAIWAN with CMC Magnetics and Ritek being the 2 "powerhouses" of media, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp (MCC) is also a big player, but sheer size/output in not even close compared to CMCMAG & Ritek...as to the QUALITY of media from Taiwan, everyone has their OWN OPINIONS on them...i will not argue with ACTUAL results obtained from people whether it "works for them" or not~ :) i'm not gonna bash ANY media company at this point...

hope that clarifies things a bit, Prodisc is also another large manufacturer of media in Taiwan, often times i hear that either CMCMAG or Prodisc actually MANUFACTURER the MCC stamped media in THEIR factories (the "made in taiwan" MCCs Verbatim everyone is so fond of) to Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp specs of course, so it is not fair to just say that EVERY MANUFACTURER in taiwan is crap, when quite possibly the media you are using is actually MADE by the companies that you condemn...(general statement of course, when i say "you" does not mean YOU specifically buddy) :)

good day to you all and good luck w/ the firmware updates to those new to it...

regarding the Plextor 716SA (sata) version, i can get one for $120 shipped to me right now and that COULD fill the void of one of my SATA slots :) i'm running a Seagate SATA hard drive at this point, so got more empty slots to spare~ LOL

but, for the $65 price tag on the IDE (PATA) version, i would be interested too IF it's brand new retail, not a refurbished unit...if that is the case, PM the info if you get it before me as i will order it as well, i called my local microcenter saving me the drive and in LOCAL store, it is still $120-$140 depending on the model chosen...

i just spoke to the dept. manager at my local store, at least for the 716 (any of the models), my local microcenter no longer has ANY in stock, he was trying to sell me the 740 (rebadged benq) and the new 760, but i politely refused his sale as he wanted $140 for the 760 LOL

anyways, if cincyrob's local store has 15-20 of the 716s left, i'm going to pick up 3 of them, even if it costs me $15 to ship them to the west coast...LOL, i'm assuming i would be charged OH sales tax rate? either way, $70 w/ tax is 1/2 the price of the $140 tag they asking for the newest 760, no thanks...they might be good units, but i could replace all 3 of my current drives in use for that price~ hehe

BTW guys iam having playback problems on some of the TYGO3s 16xthat iam getting in the value line from SMS and Meritline so everyone def. better off trying to get the TYGO2s 8x never any problems with them

that's why i've always suggested the TYG02s over the TYG03s scattered throughout this entire thread, people ask me for the bottom line, i tell them the truth~ :) the quality of the TYG02s have BEEN PROVEN over time, the TYG03s are "still making strides"...and are not as "favorable" in MY eyes either... :)

edit: even pay close attention to my sig, you will see NO MENTION of the TYG03s as MY recommended list of media....

Hi everyone!

Went to that store again to get some more Taiyo verbs but unfortunately someone has been quicker than me and has taken everything.The worst part is that they don't know if they're going to get more of these.That would teach me a lesson for hesitating to take these 5 remaining packs(50discs/pack)last time i was there.

Sad to go back home empty-handed,i've purchased the Benq DW-1650(the one in retail box) and the date of manufacture is June of this year.I paid it @ usd45.Is the price ok for that or have i overpaid it?

I've came across so many good reviews in this thread about this drive and the way it favors the Taiyo DVD+R medias that when i saw it,i couldn't resist to get one of these burners that DocTy and other members here recommend.My wife was near getting crazy when she saw me getting another drive as not later in this same month i just purchased the PLex PX-760A.Really to burn these Taiyo medias that i have,i really want to use the best drives on the market.

And thanks to you guys for giving so much infos in this thread about the best media,i.e Taiyo Yuden and the best recommended drives to burn these babies.
