@kivory666 - hey Ken, i do still watch the main threads such as this, i just chip in very slightly less than i used to :)
Been having almighty problems with my wireless router so i haven't had internet upstairs in the house for weeks so elected to pretty much stay off the net 'til we ditch cable internet and move to good ole' 8mb broadband, my new wireless router is tested and waiting with baited breath. Last night i made progress on the existing wireless router as it dawned on me that it might be overheating due to our Global Warming heatwave of late, so i got all technical and put an ice cold can of coke under the router. This seemed to work so i replaced the can (well i was thirsty!) with my posh laptop cooling tray and the router seems fine now so i seem to have regained wireless access.
Have rediscovered my interest in Linux in my time away from AD so hardly ever use Windows now apart from playing the odd game, VPN-ing into work (as little as possible i might add) and dvd duties. I could use the Linux program 'K3b' to do the actual dvd-video burns however it's a bit crap for sticking to the selected burn speed. But might try out the program 'Wine' which runs Windows stuff inside Linux, maybe that will stop me having to reboot into Windows. But anyway i digress :)
Haven't been burning a great deal lately as have been spending quality time down with G/F on the boat for a while so my stocks of Verb TYG02 and the few 100 Verb Yuden000T03 are still plentiful. However i've noticed that svp seems to have dried up in regard to Yuden000T03 now so it seems i need to find alternative discs (they have TYG03 but i take heed of all the info i read on these). Have been following a thread on cdfreaks as regards the hassle/confusion with Panasonic MIT/MIJ so am gonna steer clear. Maybe i'll try MCC004 again but as i say i'm well stocked with discs so no need to rush buy anything for some months.

OK, just getting ready to order another at least 200 ty's, was gonna do it from SMS, now after reading the past thread, how can I be sure I can get this ty2 instead of ty3, is it possible to call SMS and specifacly ask for 2's, and if not, order it thru the net, but than am I gambling if I do, also for example on this merit store that this fellow just mentioned, he said ty2's guarantee from them, how do you know they are sending ty2's, does it show the number of the kind of ty's you are ordering or do you have to ask by phone, all this is new to me so before I dish out my money on a 200 pack I would like to be sure, can use any advise I can get, than you.

only way to get the TYGO2s for sure is to get the permium line in the cake boxes and NOT the value line. ever thing i ordered as of the last few month from the value line have been TYGO3s .the TYGO2s are still your best choice

OK, were I can get this premium line, I never heard the differnce between the two, can I get it from SMS, do they have an option between the two when you order, oh, I also forgot to mention I only order DVD+R if that makes a differnce on the ty2's.

yes theres an option to order the value line or the premium line ,if you do get the DVD+R format make sure you can play them back on your standalone dvd player or booktype then to DVD-ROM

hope those samples go thru...how many did they state they were gonna send ya? or did they not specify? hehe you might be onto something here, not that anyone would exploit TY for free discs, but a few pieces for a sample is nice~ :)

FROM the description on amazon.com, all 3 of your choices APPEAR to be genuine/authentic Taiyo Yudens, the descriptions themselves are somewhat vague and i've never dealt with "Media Supply" before either, but if they are willing to ship over to you, then i guess you got no choice, i don't know how much they charge for shipping to your country, but IF they can even get them to you, they must be a pretty diversified company with good shipping partners/contacts :)they don't go really into much detail...but, MY suggestions are to avoid the first linked one (16x DVD-R) TYG03 MID coding, you will be far better off getting either the 2nd link or the 3rd, depending on whether you want to use DVD-R or DVD+R respectively~ :) the 8x rated discs are FAR more reliable, GENERALLY speaking, than the 16x rated ones for a variety of burners...
even your NEC nd6500a, max burn speed is 8x on both DVD-R and DVD+R, so there is really NO reason to purchase the more expensive 16x DVD-R discs in your first link...i would def. recommend the 2nd link for the 8x DVD-R (TYG02s) :) also, since it is a SLIMLINE drive, i have the same one on my laptop as well~ LOL, so yes, i have PERSONAL experience with this model drive :)
the default for booktype setting in the dual layer is DVD+R DL, i changed mine to dvd-rom using dvdinfopro, very easy to change...or you could use the WinBType utility, that will do it also, but dvdinfopro is just as effective~ :)
anyways, i have the standard OEM version with the 2.xx firmware, i never bothered to try using hacked firmware or anything, never bothered even looking for any (desktop drives i always use modified/hacked firmware, laptop drives i stick with OFFICIAL, that's just ME)...but, i'm currently using 2.24 revision, don't know if yours came with the 2.xx version or the 4.xx version, lemme know...
NECs do NOT booktype DVD+R to dvd-rom using official firmwares, so, for compatibility reasons, i would strongly suggest you get the Taiyo Yudens from your 2nd link, the 8x DVD-R TYG02s, even my official firmware 2.24 recognizes these discs properly and i have no issues burning to them, naturally, i use my desktop drives for the 8x DVD+R format so i can booktype them to dvd-rom, as this NEC nd-6500a will not do so on my setup/settings/firmware :)
hope that narrows down ur decision a bit, go w/ the 8x DVD-R TYs...these are good quality discs and firmwares recognize and properly set the write strategies for the TYG02s, i can almost guarantee you that if you get the 16x DVD-R TYG03, if you are still using the stock firmware that came with your drive and you have never updated before, THEY WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED and you will probably get some sort of "illegal disc" error and your drive will spit them out, thereby stopping your burning process...play it safe, get the 8x DVD-R TYG02s... :)

aabbccdd, I used the info you sent me to get the ty DVD+R, I ordered the 200 pack, it also said they are the ty2's, if they are the same 200 ones I ordered from them last year I should have no trouble burning or playback on my dvd players, I have been burning them and playing them on all my players with no problem, hope I get the same ones. Thanks.

if you just ordered the DVD+R format, you will get the YUDEN000T02s, my personal FAVORITE discs at this time~ :) if ya got the DVD-R format, then aabbccdd is correct in that you will receive the TYG02s
i noticed a lot of people shorten the MID coding for Taiyo Yudens just to save a few keystrokes, when people write "TY02" that could infer both the TYG02s or the YUDEN000T02s ie. 8x DVD-R or 8x DVD+R (they have the same ending), but either way..both are high quality discs~ :)

what is the MAXIMUM changeable # u could put in for a sample request? LOL...i am going to check out the website to see if they have the 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s available in an inkjet printable (full hub white or non-hub silver inkjet printable, i don't care) for sample, only because that's the only TYs i haven't tried yet! LOL

Thanks a lot for the lessons you teach me. I asked amazon about shipping and it turns out that media supply sends to some countries in asia but not to Israel.
BUT, amazon told me to check auction list and zshops. In zshops there is meritline_zshop, and they ship internationally. I guess it's the same as meritline shop. I will inquiry more about shipping, but i assume they won't have problems to ship to Israel. The only difference from the meritline web shop is that i pay through amazon and not wire transfer which is a lot ( i can buy here with such a price). The official web site of meritline was willing to ship to israel.
AS for the other points you mention:
1. my firmware is 2.4 on a fujitsu siemens laptop. As i understand it's OEM not nec original and haven't changed the firmware
2. Can't update firmware so easily because i have only linux on my laptop. Happily deleted windows. ;-))))))))

I asked about updating firmware. There is a way, but i don't know if it is worth to do it because i only had problems with tdk which was written x16 but on my laptop it burned only x4. Some weird bug with this nec type and tdk. the nec found speed description x4, while with dvd identifier on windows it showed x16 speed description.
I am also hesitant about changing firmware. I want a working burner.
3. Until now i used verbatim DVD-R x8. And was very satisfied. Burned at x8. Nowadays they sell verbatim here x16 . So if i will buy x16 here (just in case i am not lucky to buy at amazon), will i have also problems? It will burn x8 or less? BTW, verbatim to buy at ebay is ok?
4. As for DL, right now it's out of the question. prices here are outrage.
5. The strtegies for the burner are set already as far as i know. BTW, if i ask taiyo yuden to send me 2 samples ( + and -r), they will send me?
6. Can you explain me this booktyping to dvd-rom? noob question. ;-)
7. Since you have used far more dvds than me, the +r TYG x8, burns ok with this burner? I just want to know, just in case. FujiFilm +r works also ok on this burner?
And, your experience is indeed worth milion bucks. ;-)
You saved me from buying that el cheapo city disk. It was too good to be true. Those chinese people. They know how to fake.

@q12300 - maybe you could install 'Wine' to allow you to run Windows stuff on your Linux laptop and apply the firmware that way; however i'm not sure if something as fundamental as firmware updates could be done (or even recommended!) that way (plus i've never bothered to use Wine myself); just maybe you could google for info, you never know, it may be worth looking into.

I know about wine. never bothered to put. I could have put wine for DC++ and didn't. I use ldcpp (non cvs version). It doesn't worth to put wine just for 1 or 2 programs.
Besides wine won't help about updating firmware. I asked in the forums of gentoo and someone suggested to take dos iso cd, boot with dos iso cd, change swap into dos partition ,flash the with dos firmware and reboot (that's the general idea) and used hacked firmware (by the dangerous brothers). So, for tdk, it doesn't worth to do even that. because verbatim -r worked nicely. I never tried verbatim +r and i am curios about dvd +r taiyo yuden. I know that x16 tdk +r i had to use force media. I don't know if it's because of tdk or because of the x16 as kivory mentioned about taiyo yuden, because my burner supports only x8.

naw not nervous yet only 2 games out of first and 1 1/2 infront of wild card things are good here.... you know how we are lose a few then win 8 or 9 in a row...lol.
got a confirmation from TY, they are sending out some samples on the 7th thats friday so i should get them next mon or tues... they did say how many so who knows
