@FredBun
What is the batch number of your suspect TYs? Maybe we can narrow this down to a certain batch.

well media is just like everything else, there is good and bad, there's nothing perfect(other than a cold budweiser)lol. seeing that TY's are at the top of the list you can never go wrong with them. if ya get a few bad disc, just remember there only disc, and remember F.I.D.O. F**K It Drive On....
personally right now i am working on my first 100 TY's 50 8x+r and 50-r oh yea and the 10 TY sent me, 8x+r. ive used about 20 of the +r and only 10 of the -r which are 16x-r. and i havent had 1 bad burn. other than me makeing the mistake of just doing the extras and forgot to put the main movie on the disc. i used to only use 16x+r verbs but this last batch of them i have has been less desirable. i have about 60 burns with this batch and about 20 of them has some noticable pixels and some freezing. but as people know here i think that might be my standalone player not likeing VERBS..
no 2 people are gonna have the same problems.but everyone can have the same qood results... just me rambling on
F.I.D.O.

@FredBun - don't feel shy. report what you experience.
Quote: However, just in the last couple weeks, I encountered two knowledgeable people who had similar problems, Phaser1 and Janrocks
This only confirms that there is a big batch batch of TYG02 recently or worse, they have switched to new plants that are producing lower quality discs or have lowered their quality standard.
As they say, you get what you pay for - I'm wondering if these rediculoulsy low prices are a reflection of the pressures everyone, including TY, is under to deliver media at these price points and quality problems have finally hit the traditional "best".
Also, maybe these folks have put their best people, resources, assetss, plants, etc. on projects related to HD media and quality is suffering due to this switchover.
Batches were stamped:
GG000149 - newest batch - two "marginal" coasters so far, out of 20 (new DW1650 drive as well)
GG000077 - older batch - about 6 of 75 were bad. 3 or 4 had visible dye problems. Two typical pattern are random splatter and a ring.
If you can SEE defects, how many are getting under a microscope? Remember, the track pitch and pits are extremeley small.
These are proof that at least some TY disc problems are not related to any kind of hardware, software, content, or procedural problems.
I'm afraid we all need to start doing more research and start tracking this down with some diligence. If you don't, you should be thinking that every burn can be creating a coaster and what havoc that can create.

They used to code out as prodiscs (junk) but may not be the case anymore. If anybody knows what they code out as of rescent please feel free to contribute.

@cincyrob - maybe I am not reading your post right but you seem to be rather cavalier about this media quality issue. and your FIDO motto may work for some things but you may want to adopt a different attitude as it relates to quality of discs and burns.
And any disc one receives directly from TY should not be included in this discussion. It is highly probable that TY is providing A+ media as samples and not likely typical of what is being shipped out by the container load to the masses.

I buy my TYs 200 - 300 at a time, and, currently, I am on my second order's worth. That puts me at over 500 burns into various valueline inkjet printable spindles/batch numbers without problems. I need to check and see if I my lone, unopened spindle is one of those batch numbers. I don't think it is; I think it is GG000226. I posted it earlier in this thread, but I am not about to sift through it. LOL I may just go back to paying the extra 5 cents a disc for the premium line. It's hard to beat the valueline deals with that free shipping thrown in as well, though.
It would be VERY helpful if users that have problems post those batch numbers because even the best is not perfect... This (quality)is something many members had questioned as soon as the valueline offers started surfacing.

aabbccdd,
Quote: Mort ,the Fujifilm MIT still code out as prodisc and as you said there junk
I have Fuji's that code out Ritek.
Physical Format Information (ADIP):
Disc ID: RITEK-R03-02
Book Type: DVD+R
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 1
Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP)
Linear Density: 0.267 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 2,491,711
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 0
I took that from DVD Decrypter. These MIT Fujis are 8X if that has anyhting to do with it, maybe the 16X are prodisc...
Whats strange is the last batch of the same Fuji's I bought were exactly the same except MIJ and code out Taiyo Yuden, so there must have been a switch durring their 8X phase and then again going into 16X.

Joshewah,
The riteks are far superior to prodiscs. Fuji may have switched who they are buying their media from (regarding the MIT's) or the +r's may br ritek and the -r's still prodisc.

Seems like the new 16X media is a crap shoot to who manufactured it and how good it is? Now getting bad reports form those using TYs. Verbatims seem to be the only ones so far doing ok consistently. JM2C I have some verbs 16Xs but have yet to use them.

I prefer to buy the 8x rated media as long as it is available. I'm still on the 8x verbatim DVD+R bandwagon and can not report any problems with them to date. I know TY is good media but as long as my verbatim's are performing so well I don't see any reason to deviate. I can honestly say I have not had a coaster that was caused by the media in over 200 burns. I have had a couple coasters but when the same folder was burned to different media (ty DVD+R and sony DVD+RW) the problem was still there so it obviously wasn't media related. After using alternative encode/trancode methods problems were finally resolved.

I've got a couple tubs of 8x -R Verbs that i bought way back (can't remember the MID codes or country of manufacture) that consistently fail whenever i try to use them up; these were the last 2 tubs of Verbs from my mass-buying Verb days, and it's put me off Verbatim for a while now. Also i had firmware anomalies with Verb 16x (MCC004) in the last few versions of firmware for the Benq DW1650 (info in the Benq Hall of Fame thread - anomalies that i've yet to find answers to, not even at cdfreaks forums; they burnt fine but the Nero errors bothered me so i returned all the MCC004 and steer clear now); now i only use 'Verb TY', as i get the quality of TY with the matte finish of Verbs (and they're always a bit cheaper than TY). i've used shedloads of Verbs and of TY too, so i'm not advocating mass problems with Verbs, i'd jump ship just as easily if i had TY problems. About the only person i know of that's burnt more Verb and/or TY than me is doc666; one of the problems if there were indeed mass quality problems with TY would be that there'd be no better media to move up to!

creaky,
Yeah I don't think I would hold verbatim dvd-r's to the same standards as TY dvd-r's. I don't use dvd-r's so that's no concern for me. Again as to 16x rated media, I will buy 8x media instead as long as it is available. If or when the 8x media is no longer available, drive manufactures should have some good write strategies with updated f/w for their drives.

no i didnt mean for it to sound like that, but if it is only a few disc its nothing to cry bloody murder over. i agree if TY is all of a sudden sending out infirour disc it should be addressed. as for the samples i got from them they are perfect..... i havent gotten and shipped directly from TY i have the MIJ sony+/- r's 50pc cake boxes and have yet to have a problem with them my 16x-r's that have sony's name on them are the same batch number as some of the people that have them dirctly shipped to them... i havent burnt them all yet so i cant say if i will have a problem with all 100.but out of about 40 or so no problems. as for my 10 samples TY sent me i bet anything they are far better than what they are shipping out in bulk across the world. once again it is luike everything else give you a taste of the good stuff to get ya hooked then ship out not as good quality in bulk.....
it just my way of looking at it. they are in the game to make money.

don't shop supermediastore.com two shipments of jewel cases in a row had a bunch of them smashed even i alerted them to this problem the first time it happened. They wanted me to pay for shipping them back just so they could give me a credit for the damaged ones!I don't think i'm going to spend 10-20$ to send a couple dozen jewel cases back that sre only worth cents. It is the principle of the matter.I warned them the first time it happened and it took 8-10 emails just to get their customer service to respond. Then another order that i already had on the way showed up with about 10 more broken cases. They had them packed in a box surrounded by pillow packs that didn't even have any air in them and only the boxes the jewel cases were actually in had handle with care on them not the larger box they were packed in.Whats the use to have a handle with care label on the inside of the box??even though they have good prices for taiyo yuden dvd-r's i don't think i'll deal with them again.Their customer service was lousy and took forever to respond to my complaints. And they expected me to pay for something that was their fault (twice!).And don't ask me how this happened ,there was actually a little bit of data on a couple of the ty dvd-r's i got.I got a message when trying to burn that there was already data written to the disc so i checked it with a probe and sure enough there was ??????? anyone know how this could be when they were brand new?

Now THAT sux (data on discs)!!!! Can you say, "Repackaged?" LOL
Fortunately, I haven't run into any problems with sms.com OR meritline.com
As far as 16X media: I use Verbs IF I buy 16X media and I burn it at 8X. The support for 16X TY just isn't up to par yet on many drives... I, like many others, stick mainly to 8X media. The best 8X media, IMO, is as follows: T02, TYG02, MCC003, MAXELL002, and MCC02 in that order.
I have no need to try anything else...

@honyak45 - re alleged data on blank discs - i've (very infrequently) seen similar problems, but the only time i've seen this is where a burner has a fit and doesn't quite recognise a disc correctly and in effect tells you there's data on the disc (can't remember the exact error you'd see in say, Nero for instance), but using the disc in another burner (or even trying the disc again) can magically cause the disc to appear blank as it should be. That's what i think has happened. Plus if any data had actually been written to the disc you could tell from looking at the underside, there would be tell-tale differences in the 'ring' pattern ie you could differentiate between a blank disc and a written-to disc
@mort81 - despite my protesting i wouldn't use normal Verbs again, i was very surprised to find Verbatim Datalifeplus 8x +R in packs of 50 (made in Taiwan) for a measly £5 each. edit- checked and they're MCC003 - excellent stuff, doing fine at 8x even on my crappy laptop burner; couldn't grumble at 10p a disc, so bought them all, 5 tubs. Major bargain. And i'll go back once a week and buy them out if they're daft enough to re-stock. Then i hit jackpot again in another shop with 120 Maxell CD-R's for a lowly £8. I now have forearms like Arnie Schwarzenegger but at least i got some bargains. Can't remember the last time i found better deals (than the internet) from walk-in stores.
@cincyrob - i'm a tad rusty on where Verbs are manufactured but i'm fairly sure that it's the Dual Layer Verbs that are made in Singapore; 16x Verbs (MCC004) are usually made in India if i recall correctly, and most other Verbs are Taiwan. Those MCC 8x -R may have been made in India (i've used shedloads of 8x -R made in India/Singapore - these were old stock if made in India/Singapore). As i say, i believe the only Verbs currently made in Singapore are Dual Layer..

Yeah I agree with your assessment of honky's story, sounds like something is being left out to me. Either way, experiences like that with sms.com are few and far between, they generally have good customer service and are very reputable.

The discs that i found were only two out of a 50 pk. and yes they had data on them i tried to use them in another burner too but the same thing and there was a miniscule amount on them so the telltale line on the bottom was probably too small to see anyway. And as I said i ran them through two different probe programs that verified it.And as far as sms.com i wasn't having any trouble with them until that first incident of damaged goods. And i told them the first time that it wasn't packaged for shipping properly and they nlet it happen again.I'm talking the whole side of one of 4 25pks. with the whole side smashed ruining like 7-10 of the cases. And there were scratches and fingerprints all over some of them, even a piece of skin in one!like someone shook their dandruff in one!Their customer service sucks and their policies on me having to pay to ship the crap that was their fault that it got damaged back so they can give me a few cents credit sucks.
