The answer you seek is here.

I would update the Wiikey to 1.9g before running the DKJR update. DKJR will update your Wii to 3.0E.

If you have Internet access on your Wii, I would first use the Internet to update the Wii to 3.1E, then I would run 1.9g, (optional: Config 1.3 to turn Region Override on), and then DKJR.

@ rafa. hi, i'm fairly new to all this & despite doing a fair bit of research, some of its still over the top of my head. most of the stuff i have read has been by you on various threads thru here, & you seem a bit of a gospel on these matters to be fair, so wondering if you could help me. i've got a PAL wii, with wiikey installed, and its currently got version 2.2E firmware. i've got donkey kong jet race,but the disc just keeps spinning, & when i press A, it says initializing update, which i guess i don't wanna do, so i eject. my wii is not connected to the net. i've downloaded your excellent 1.9gbootPAl, which is really helpful, cos i'd tried plenty of times doing it myself with filechop with no success but lots of frustration. anyway, could you tell me how i can update my firmware to at least 3.1E, tho i've heard also about 3.3E? plus there's also all this stuff about 1.3? is this as well as 3.3E & something totally seperate, or the same? do i install the 1.9g patch 1st? sorry this is very long winded, but i am new to all this & apologise if i'm going over old stuff. any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes, from all the reports, it appears that indeed duplicate channels are the only side effects. (As long as your Wii and Wiikey are up-to-date)

1) DKJR will update your wii to 3.0
2) SMG will update your Wii to 3.1

If you want to update your Wii to 3.1E, use SMG. Just make sure it's a PAL version
If you decide to do that, I would first update with 1.9g. Just make sure it's a good burn (good media, at 4x or lower speed) [Read all directions in my initial post]
After 1.9g, you might need to run the 1.3 config disc to turn Region Override on.

Yes i turned region override on but i still cannot play super mario galaxy, the screen remains black. Another question i want to ask is, how do you check the firmware version of the wii key (through the config discs shown on the top)? And also SMG is not patched with brick blocker.

Your Wii is definitely Japanese. (Then why the double channel with WiiFIT (J)?!?!)
1) Have you turned Region Override On using the Config disc?
2) Have you patched the SMG game with Wiibrickblocker? If you did, then the game will not run and it will give you the black screen. You cannot use a brickblocked SMG disc.

@WiiWee and @squall23 :
You can move the dupe channels out of the way:
Hold B, then press A when your cursor is over the duplicate channel, then drag it,
Drag it over to the + on the right.

ok, quick question.

i have the dvd9 version of the game and haven't tried to do anything with it yet.

is it possible to avoid downloading a copy of the dvd5 version of the game if i just waste another DL DVD to burn a non-brickblocked version of the dvd9 game? i would rather just waste the 5 bucks for an extra disc than sit here for 2 days trying to get a dvd5 game off of a public tracker.

as i'm reading this it seems a little unclear as to why a dvd5 version would be specifically needed to run the game anyway. is there a reason why it HAS to be a dvd5 or is this only being advised to save money?

This is looking like a good thread has helped me a lot thank you,
now I just have a few things,
I have a NTSC wii with a wiikey
I put in a Jap version of SSBB today with only regionfrii on it, or w.e its called

anyway it did the update without thinking about it I let it go, now i have 2 channels of japanese, anyway that's the small issue, now everytime I put in the jap version of SSBB, it comes up, error 001 unauthorized device detected,

so I updated my wiikey to 1.9b which i was told was the latest 1, im not sure what my wii is at, i will take it to my friends tomorrow but im guessing its at 3.1J since I updated it from the jap SSBB even tho my wii is a US wii, so im wondering how i can get the jap update removed if i can and if i can, get SSBB working at all.

Thanks for all your help so far :D

@ub3rb3n:
You need to update your Wiikey to 1.9g. Then you will need to use the Config 1.3 disc (or the hacked version of it, if the original does not work) to change the Region Override to On.

@finishr:
Official word is that the Wiikey team is working on a new update as we speak.

@GokuSoul:
Change the speed of the Wii's drive from 6x to 3x. (It seems that works in most of the cases)

@striketwo:
For the swap trick you need two discs, one normal, one brickblocked. Two DL ones will work fine.

Here are the possible causes for the Black Screen:

1) A bad SMG image
2) Trying to play a BrickBlocke or patched version of SMG
3) Bad disc burn (Reburn the image at low speeds and have the burning software verify the burn)
4) Trying to play a US or PAl version of SMG on your JAP Wii (Please check the image's region)
5) Possibly a bad burn of the 1.9g update disc. Reburn it on good medis at 4x speed or lower.

I hope it helps.

Thank you for your response,

I guess my system is semi-bricked because unfortunatly I cannot access my settings which I am told is semi-bricked,

would full brick be that the wii system wont work at all?

I guess I have to wait till a new US firware comes out to update it back to NTSC

The latest firmware is 3.1 with SMG, right? Is there any way to re-apply this firmware?

Is there any way to reformat a Wii without being able to access the settings menu?

In order to un-brick a Wii, you need a firmware update (from your Wii's region) higher than the firmware version that bricked your Wii.

Post more details if you need help.

I just did the same thing and semi-bricked my Wii with that Donkey Kong Jet Race game. I didn't know about the 'update-the-wrong-region=brick' problem till after it happened. I can't complain of course, but I've been looking for a solution and here it what I learned:

(please correct me if I'm wrong)

1: If you semi-brick your Wii with a wrong region update, you can *fix* it by applying an update with a newer firmware of the same region as your Wii. So if you have a US Wii that got bricked by a Euro update, you have to use a US game with a newer firmware to fix it.

2: Always run "wii brick blocker" (google it) before you burn an ISO. If there is an update in that game, it'll remove it, thus avoiding the problem in the future

3:Donkey Kong Jet Race is the EURO version of the US Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. I thought it was a new DK Game, got excited and well, opps.

4:There are only 2 ways to update the firmware on the Wii. One being an Internet update. But if your semi-bricked, you can't get to the settings to do it. Which leads to the only other way to update the firmware. And that's with a newer game that contains a firmware update built in.

Soooo...
What do I do now? Well, I can't tell what firmware version I'm at since I can't get to the settings. But I attempted to play Super Mario Paper, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mario Strikers Charged in order to hopefully fix it. Unfortunately none of them worked... I'm guessing for one of two reasons.
1: The update that Donkey Kong Jet Race (EUR) applied is newer than all the other games I mentioned. or...
2: Since I already ran those 3 other mario games, Once it updates once with them. it won't update again.

I'm curious to know what version games firmware update it. I've been googling for a Wii firmware history without luck. And I've also been searching for a list of games that includes firmware updates, and which version they have. If anyone knows of that info, I'm curious to check it out.

So, the only solution that I know of right now... is to wait for a new game to come out with a NEWER Firmware. And from the looks of it, Nintendo puts out updates on it's Mario titled/themed games.

I just looked up the upcoming releases at http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html and see the next "Mario" game is Mario Kart Wii to be released Q2 2008, so in a few months. But there may be a game with a new update earlier too. But it's just a hunch that that Mario Kart Wii will fix this. But there are other non-mario games that are known to have updates as well. Big Brain Academy was mentioned in a forum too. And there are mario games that probably don't have updates. So who knows? I'm just having some wishful thinking :)

If anyone has any other info, comments and/or solutions :) We'd love to hear them.
I am in an almost identical situation to this guy. In fact, my wii was semi-bricked by the exact same game. Since I was already using the latest firmware from SMG, can someone confirm that I am indeed hosed until Nintendo releases a game with newwr firmware? I have an NTSC-U wii and updated with DK Jet Race PAL. All games still work, just duplicate channels and no access to settings.

After a lot of trouble I finally got the DL game to run today. I'll just say what I did to get it run to maybe contribute some more information to the thread.

I use a wiikey 1.9g with a US wii. I had the modchip set to all region, I did not use wiifrii on the image.

Started out burning on a Memorex DVD+R DL. Did the 15% trick, burned another one using wiibrickblocker to patch. I could get the game to load on the wii channel screen, but I was getting the "white screen" error immediately after the "now loading" screen.

I thought it might be a media problem so I burned another wiibrickblocker copy on a Verbatim DL disc that I bought this afternoon. I tried that and got the black screen "error 001," then restarted my wii and out of frustration tried to boot it again, this time the game got past the loading screen, but for maybe 2-3 seconds into the opening movie it cut off and went back to the white screen error.

I went upstairs to try to figure out what else it could be and while I was up there my little brother kept trying to boot it over and over again. To my surprise, he ended up booting it by tapping "A" as soon as he saw the "now loading" screen so that it would pass the opening movie and title screen as quickly as possible, avoiding the white screen error and making it to the menu, where it appears that you're safe once you get there.

I played several hours of both single and multi-player with no problems at all, and have gotten it to boot again using the same method of tapping "A" once the loading screen appears. My console did not dupe channels or lock me out of the settings menu, it seems like everything is fine.

Anyway, hope this helps out. This forum has been a life saver for me so I'm happy to try to return the favor.

I can't update because of the "Connections Error" when running the 1.9G update.

Has anyone ever resolved this issue?

The connection on my Chip appears fine, and it does appear to be a legit WiiKey, however even then a clone should upgrade because everyone elses does. ... and in any event what is "legit" about any of the Chinese Pirate Chips?!

You can check your Wii's firmware by going into settings. It's on the first page, top right.

Read the last four or five pages of this thread for many suggestions about this very problem.

However, there was a large batch of clones who were un-responsive to updates.
