Hey guys and gals, I am hoping someone can help me out. Is there a free program that will help decrypt the newer sony movies? I'm not very smart when it comes to this. I have shrink, DVD43, dvd decryptor and i also tried dvdfab...I'm so confused. On another thread someone posted instructions on how to do bewitched using decryptor and some other programs, but I don't understand it. I couldn't even get past the first step. I don't know if there is a simple way to crack the new sony encryption.....AnyDVD is too expensive. Please help me if you can....thank you.

Hi it's me again, i can't get it to work...but i think i know why. The movie I am trying to back up isn't a sony movie at all. I assumed it was when I had so much trouble doing it. This movie is a newparamount/dreamworks. I followed all the steps but when i try to move the title over in the shrink program it won't let me. There is an error. I'm stumped, and i don't even know if AnyDVD would help with this movie. hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm. well thank oyu for oyur help.

First off delete DVD43...it dont play nice with AnyDVD, Download the trial version of AnyDVD and install it. Reboot.....then punch it up. It will come up in your taskbar. Right click and go to settings. Make sure its on defaults and if you dont want all the fbi crap....click removing adverts...jump directly to tile menu.

Close the settings and make sure its still in the task bar. The punch up shrink and go about as usual. If for some reason it dont work....send all the ifo's to support @slysoft and there will be a fix in a few hrs..:>

I don't want to sound pathetic, but I honestly can't afford it. I'm a single mom with 3 kids. Twins that are 2 and another son who is 3. AnyDVD just isn't in the budget.

If you are willing to do a little bit of work DVD Decrypter will still rip the newer Movies. There is also a guide to making a PSL2 file. Not sure which is easier as I have not tried the PSL2 guide yet:

Ripping without PSL or AnyDVD (do not remove adverts with IFOEdit if it seems too hard, blanking them may be enough):

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/255980

PSL2 Guide by Cynthia:

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56078

Both guides only require Freeware so there is no extra cost except maybe an extra 20 minutes of time or so.

Scuba Pete I posted your first post on this thread on Demonoid and of course gave you the credit for it.
If you want me to take it down I will comply but I haven't changed anything in it.
It's good I followed it myself and the question came up at my forum I see very good tips on this site and I encourage people to go and look here.
I hope you don't mind and he you might get famous.

@Necronomx,

I have no problem with pple posting my stuff as long as they mention my name OR link to our site (in my sig). We are there to support all forums.

@eroutt12,

Huuuumm, I used DVDD to rip that DVD. Perhaps your settings ?

Try these tips to fine-tune your DVD Decrypter's settings. First, it should be version 3.5.4.0. Go to "Tools", "Settings", set everything to "Default". Then in the "General" tab change, "Removal Method" from "Normal" to "Aggressive", in "File Mode", "tick" Remove IFO/BUP PUO's." For ripping in the "ISO, Read Mode", "tick" "Remove IFO/BUP PUO's" there also. in the "CSS" tab, under "CSS Cracking Method", choose "Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange" and "On Failure" choose "Yes". . IMPORTANT: In the "I / O" tab, in the bottom right, "tick" the box which says, "Ignore read errors". This helps with some Mfgr defective discs and it is an excellent setting for dealing with lightly scratched discs that may cause reading problems. We're now finished with our settings here so click "OK." There's no reason to change these settings. DVDD is good ripper right out of the box, all we did is to give it some "teeth." (Lol :)

Under "Mode" we have a choice of either File or ISO Read to rip our DVD. For problematic DVD's I suggest ripping in the "File" MODE - IMPORTANT: Remake a folder and name it VIDEO_TS (just like that, it's case sensitive) to put your ripped files in. If you are ripping a multi-angled DVD OR an episodel disc I suggest ripping in the ISO, Read MODE as that will copy every nuance of a DVD making an absolutely perfect copy. Now, go rip your happy heart out - :)

Let me know if that helps ~

Pete

@ScubaPete

I realize that ripping in ISO mode created a rip that has every part of the movie including errors, encryptions and such along with those nuances you speak of. What I didn't know is that when ripping in file mode those nuances are left out. Or did I not read your post correctly.

In looking at many multi-angled flicks (Disney is great for them) pple report experiencing navigational problems most frequently. "Snow White" being the last to come to mind. In some of the really "Dodgy" episodel ones, pple may only get the larger episode OR, the first episode and be totally unable to copy the rest. Having experienced far too many of the latter, I'm kind of an episodel nut, I've found the problem ceased completely when ripping with DVDD in the ISO Mode, compressing with DVD Shrink then burning with DVDD.

True, when ripping in the ISO Mode, you do pickup all the "glitches", gremlins and errors BUT, if the original played, by working with ISO's, the backup will play as well.

This "fix" has proven itself time after time throughout this and other forums. Take it out for a "spin", kick the tires and sea if it doesn't work well for you.

What do these do or what purpose do they serve? Are they an integral part of the film and are they needed or will improve the backup quality?

Thank you for taking the time.

I'll give it a shot, I just never really paid any attention to what I've got when I'm done as I usually just backup the main movie. Thanks for the info.

@1horror1

This is a snipet taken from petes post not too far above yours. It is how to set up DVD Decrypter to better handle scratched and dirty discs.

If this method doesnt work, I sometimes use DVDFab Decrypter for difficult discs. In addition to these two pieces of advice, if you have more than one drive capable of reading DVD-Rom's then you might try both drives.

@9mmruger

The multi-angle parts are just an enhancement and usually contained in the special features. If you leave them out it won't effect the movie when watching it in its original form, but can be fun if you like special features.

Thanks Locoeng.

Next question is about subtitles. When, for example "Dances w/Wolves" you have a foreign language being spoken and the english script being displayed at the bottom of the screen, what do you need to keep in order to keep the translation at the bottom of the screen for the viewer to read?

Still learning.

That would be the forced subtitles I believe...I've seen a guide on that, but I don't remember where. I'll look around.

hey guys I read the "cyclic redundancy check" thread and now I thought I would put an entry in. I am trying to burn SWAT, Hidalgo, and The Four Feathers. I get the CRC error on all of them. I try cleaning them but when I use Shrink and it gets to the encoding phase it gets to about 5% then the CRC error comes up. Yet when I use DVD Decrypter to decrypt it, it successfully obtains all files yet when I open shrink then open my files it does the same thing and gives me the CRC error at 3, 4, or 5%. Is it better to burn with Decrypter? I burn in File mode on Shrink since I know nothing at all about ISO and all that stuff. Thank you guys.

Make sure that you have the current versions of all the progs that you listed. DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are no longer being developed so upgrades well not be available again, but they should be able to handle the encryption on all of the movies you mentioned. Make sure that those discs you are trying to backup are free of dirt and scratches.

Discs with scratches are a bear but I've given it some thought & I've come up with "Uncle" ScubaPete's Last Ditch Suggestions to work through a hard-to-rip DVD"

I have just finished battling "The Scorpion King". After trying to rip the first disc for some time, I finally took it back for an exchange as defective. I fared no better with the replacement - What to do ? The bottom line, it was a bad batch from the Mfgr. So now I've compiled several "tricks" and things you can try before changing discs - Hopefully, one of them will work for you, at different times, they've worked for me. :)

Let's begin by assuming you've tried your favorite recipe to rip and encode without success. Hopefully you're running AnyDVD as a "Behind-the-scenes" ripper, if not, let's give it a "go" -

Here is a 21-day FREE trial ~> http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

No luck there ? Then let's continue on . . . .

First, let's start by Fine-Tuning DVD Decrypter
Let's take a moment to fine-tune your DVD Decrypter's settings. First, it should be version 3.5.4.0. Go to "Tools", "Settings", set everything to "Default". Then in the "General" tab change, "Removal Method" from "Normal" to "Aggressive", in "File Mode", "tick" Remove IFO - PUO's." For ripping in the "ISO, Read Mode", "tick" "Remove IFO PUO's" there also. in the "CSS" tab, under "CSS Cracking Method", choose "Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange" and "On Failure" choose "Yes". . IMPORTANT: In the "I / O" tab, in the bottom right, "tick" the box which says, "Ignore read errors". This helps with some Mfgr defective discs and it is an excellent setting for dealing with lightly scratched discs which may cause reading problems. We're now finished with our settings here so click "OK." There's no reason to change these settings. DVDD is good ripper right out of the box, all we did is to give it some "teeth." (Lol :)

If you have never used DVDD before, take it out for a "spin" around the block, Check under the hood, Kick the tires and climb inside and smell that "New DVD Decrypter" "smell". Go home, talk it over with the wife and, if you feel in the morning the way you do now, come back and I'll put you behind the wheel of a Brand new DVD Decrypter at a price so low, you'll think it was free.
Huuummm, come to think about it, it is FREE - Well, What are you waiting for ?Remember to stop back and tell me how you feel about it once you've put some "mileage" on it - OK, if you need the newest copy (released 21, March, 05. .

Here it is -
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/DVDdecrypter.zip

WHEN RIPPING A TROUBLESOME DVD or an episodel DVD, I use DVD Decrypter in the ISO Mode -

REASON: When you rip a DVD in the "File" Mode, you only copy the file structure. When ripping a DVD in the "ISO" Mode, you copy the entire disc just as it is. Every nuance, camera angle, etc. ~ We are assuming that the original DVD will still play alright. If it won?t even play AND you don?t mind risking the loss of the disc, try my scratch repair suggestions at the bottom of this post. Your chances are probably about 50/50.

When ripping in the "ISO" Mode, we want to create a folder to hold our ISO image files. You will have an .ISO file and a .Mds file. Not to worry, DVD Shrink makes picking up an ISO image as easy as pie. Open DVD Shrink and go to "File" - "Open Disc Image", "Browse" for the folder you created to hold your Image files and select the .Mds file. Yes I know, the size is very small and it seems that the entire DVD is held in the ISO file BUT everything will open fine. Let DVD Shrink pickup the file and then process as usual. If you want to use another proggy, you can use ISO Buster to change your ISO Image back to your VOB files, it only takes a second to convert them.

Here are some extra "Tricks" for your "Hard to rip" DVD's -

1. This is a bit "wacky" BUT it has worked for some pple. Rebooting your PC (cleaning out all the memory) allows some discs to be seen better - As I said, it can't hurt and it's worth a try -

2. Begin by playing your DVD with your PC's player. Play the main feature for two or three minutes then open DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter or your weapon of choice. - As soon as you begin your rip turn off your player so it doesn't interfere with your analyzing. The playing beforehand is only so that your ripping program can "Find" your DVD.

3. The "Magic cleaning" technique: Try cleaning your DVD discs. Yea, I know they're new and clean but do it anyway. Do it a few seconds before inserting it into your DVD tray, use a disc cleaner, eyeglass cleaning solution or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and a soft cotton cloth and rub-a-dub, dub. As soon as you're finished, "Pop" it into your DVD tray and fire up your program.
You would be surprised how many times your disc is now "seen" and works like a "Bad Dog". :-)

NOW, if all of these fail I would put it down to a bad disc OR Mfgr error and return the disc for a replacement one. It may even be a regional problem affecting an entire batch. Though thought rare, it has been happening more and more since the beginning of '05 and should be considered. If this is so, buying a disc from another area OR, probably easier, wait some little time and exchange it again, trying for a different batch. I finally borrowed a copy from a mate's in a different province and it ripped right through.

Last ditch tricks to get to a scratched disc -

OPTION 1. The best results can be expected by using a professional appliance i.e. Skip Doctor at $49.99 for their most popular model - http://singclean.com/skipdr.htm

OPTION 2. Some success has been had using software programs like Rescue X DVD or ISO Buster ~> http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/

OPTION 3. There is a handy little program called CD Check we might like to use,

"But ScubaPete, we're working with DVD's. Different letters, different discs." Ooohh ya, I guess I didn't mention it works well on DVD's too. :)
CDCheck is a utility for the prevention, detection and recovery of damaged files on CD-ROMs with an emphasis on error detection.

Download it here:
http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/

OR

OPTION 4. "Dr. ScubaPete's, too cheap to buy the professional stuff, Recipe Book for Scratch Repair."

To help with those small "Kiddie Scratches" on your DVD's -

THIS TO BE USED AS A FINAL RESORT to retrieve scratched DVD's.

Materials needed:
A soft cotton cloth
Toothpaste w/Baking Soda (Arm & Hammer, which may be added)
Isopropanol Alcohol
Pledge
Glass
Ice
Orange Juice and Vodka

Method: "If this doesn't work it's into the "Circular filing receptacle enclosure" (an Americanism meaning "The garbage can") with you -

START:
1. Place the disc on a firm soft surface.
2.Apply a small amount of toothpaste with a very small amount of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to a slightly damp, clean, soft cotton cloth and apply to your DVD. Rubbing very firmly in even strokes from the center outwards towards the edge. Repeat 10 to 15 times. Do this over the entire disc turning the disc slowly in a circular manner, always going from the inside toward the outer edge.

When Finished -

3. clean it either with a commercial unit (available at "Radio Shack" OR your local electronics store) OR clean the disc thoroughly with a clean cotton cloth moistened with Isopropanol Alcohol, Contact lens cleaner OR in a bind, you may use some Windex (Windex has some additives, coloring and the like). Clean by using a firm even rubbing motion from the center outwards towards the edge. Clean the disc thoroughly with a clean cotton cloth moistened with Isopropanol Alcohol, Contact lens cleaner OR in a bind use some Windex, using a firm even rubbing motion from the center outwards towards the edge.

4. Using a clean piece of cotton cloth, apply Pledge to the entire disc in the same manner as the toothpaste was applied above.

Attempt to play disc.

5. If the disc refuses to play, take 1 large 12oz. glass, add just 3 Ice cubes, too many ice cubes will "water down" the mixture rendering it unsuitable for usage, then add 70% Orange Juice and 30% Vodka. The contents are to be shaken, NOT STIRRED. The glass's contents are to be liberally applied internally.

Steps 2 through 5 may be repeated as required to recover disc.

After 2 complete passes, an additional step 5. may be repeated PRN. (PRN is medical lingo for "As needed" OR "Whenever you wish.) :P)

~ Wishing you the best of luck ~

As I stated in the beginning, this is a last-ditched procedure. This failing, it's time to acquire another disc. At least we gave it everything we could.

Cheers !

Pete
