Not to be a blowhole, I think most of you know me well enough to know that I'm not someone who tries to be a mod. But if you guys want to talk about where you're from, please do so in the safety valve thread, I believe one of you suggested starting an Ohio thread, that's a great idea. Please don't take this the wrong way, I respect everybody in this thread, I'm just tired of checking this thread and seeing posts about where you're from, what it's like locally, etc. Thank you.

T'was I who said to start an Ohio thread since I am a native, but thats not my point here. I just wanted to share my near heart attack on this Ty/ burning thread. My 9 mo. old daughter was crawling around my computer, and just as I was closing the door on my BenQ to load up a Ty she bumped the case door and it caused the tray to be blocked while closing. I thought I'd blown the motor or the slide mechanism but It burned fine and still opens and closes properly.
Moral of the story is child proof your toys. Yes I said it keep the toys away from kids.

I would like to discuss the non-TY branded, TYs.
Meaning Fuji. I have purchased a blue covered Fuji CD-Rs because they were TYs. Worked great. Some of the lighter colored Fuji's were not TYs. For the CD-Rs, I would wait for a sale on K-Mart, etc on Fuji, then purchase.
On the DVD end, I would like to know about TYs that are branded with another companies name. I know this is a moving target, but usually they stay consistent within a companies model number.
I have one of those Liteon-SOHW-1693S burners and it is a workhorse. I will use Nero, mostly, CloneDVD2 next and once in a while, Media Central for burning.
I have had more success burning +R DVDs and DVD DLs, than with DVD-R. Plus I t hink they work better with newer stand alones and also when I burn as data for DivX movies.
I think that if a stand alone if a few years old, probably -Rs would work better.
I want to talk about pricing. I disagree that "in general" that +Rs are more expensive than -Rs. However, when it comes specifically to TYs, they seem to be biased more to -Rs. When have more of a variety on the -R end and the +Rs, at the higher speeds are a lot more.
This might or might not be true with other brands. For example, here is a :
TDK Electronics DVD+R47FCC100*M 16x compatible DVD+R for general use 100 pack by TDK for $29.99 at Amazon.
Here is a small pack of Verbatim 4.7 GB 16x DVD+R Recordable Media Spindle (25 Discs) for $14.99.
Ridata 8x 4.7 GB DVD+R Spindle (100 Discs) - $32.95.
RiDATA 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 100 Pack Cake Box Disc - Retail - $33 at Newegg.com (this does NOT include a mail in rebate. I don't consider a mail in rebate part of the price.
Newegg.com again. For $31.99 : Verbatim 4.7GB 16X DVD-R 100 Pack Disc - Retail
TDK 4.7GB 16X DVD-R 100 Pack Disc - Retail - 27.99
Last is TAIYO YUDEN 4.7GB 8X DVD+R 50 Pack Disc - Retail for $23.99
So I think it varies on price and what is on sale.
Thanks,
Jon

hi jon,
good observations u got there~ :)
but, even for THIS price you quoted, i wouldn't buy them unless amazon was PAYING ME that price to take em' :) Quote: TDK Electronics DVD+R47FCC100*M 16x compatible DVD+R for general use 100 pack by TDK for $29.99 at Amazon.
LOL
for the most part when people compare pricing ONLINE (specifically TYs), the DVD+R format is almost 100% of the time MORE EXPENSIVE, naturally, if TYs can be found under a different name brand (Fuji) for example, when local stores have their sales on media, the price is identical whether it be DVD-R or DVD+R, just gotta know how to distinguish the TYs from the "non-TYs" :)
people will always have their OWN preferences on "which media is best to suit THEIR OWN needs", some swear by Sony, some swear by Verbatim, some swear by Ritek, and then others SWEAR AT all 3 mentioned above~ :) i've recently had a member SWEAR AT ME for using almost exclusively Taiyo Yuden, because they APPARENTLY don't work for HIS setup, so he's going back to the "cheapies" as he calls them because they DO WORK FOR HIM :)
so, everyone will have their own opinions as to which THEY PREFER, i too have that Liteon SOHW-1693S, but burn almost exclusively in the DVD-R format with it, reason for this is NOT because it's not a good DVD+R burner, quite the contrary, it burns DVD+R very well; but because my Benq's are MUCH BETTER @ DVD+R than that liteon :)
once again, user preference after trials done on MY SIDE/MY SETUP.
as to your MAIN question you posted, Quote: On the DVD end, I would like to know about TYs that are branded with another companies name. I know this is a moving target, but usually they stay consistent within a companies model number.
what would you like to talk about? it's very difficult to PINPOINT a companies' model number because the same model number on media could be PRODUCED in any country (taiwan, japan, india, etc.) MOST companies do not use model numbers to differentiate between country of origin, but rather, TYPE of media and RATED SPEED of said media. it would be nearly impossible to say "x media with model number xxx-xxx" is ALWAYS Taiyo Yuden made under the X-label/brand" you would get a whole BARRAGE of vary'in results depending on what part of the country you are in and what is available in YOUR own locale~ :)
nevertheless, good post, come on back, have a discussion or two on TYs, happy burning

Hey Doc,
Thanks for the reply. It felt really good to be understood. Sometimes I have seen where there are "fundamentalist" brand people who seem to take it personally and attack when someone might say that there are choices.
Please tell me about your experiences with TDK media. This whole media thing is a moving target, that is moving faster.
I used Amazon.com and Newegg.com for examples, and was not trying to advertise.
I am so glad you cleared things up about the Liteon SOHW-1693S. I usually burjn in +R because my stand alone DVD players like +R better than -R. I also have burnt about 14 DVD+R DL on the Liteon, using both Fuji and Verbatim and it worked great. Will go up to to 4x (not higher) with the Verbatim.
If I was going to mail out a DVD to some people and I didn't know what they had, I would most likely burn using -R. Sine -R was the original writing format, it will work on older DVD players and therefore have a better chance of being more universally successful.
The real point ? Know what you want to do, what is most important for you to do and use a combination of hardware, media, software and configuration set that works best for you and your needs.
I think really understanding the configuration set of your software and whatg will be working best for you setup is very important. Some web pages of burning/ripping softwarer application list media and CD/DVD +-R media that either they have tested successfully or their beta users have tested succesfully. Doesn't mean others won't work, but at least you know that the vendor has tested that setup.
I have to amplify you point about the Quote: i've recently had a member SWEAR AT ME for using almost exclusively Taiyo Yuden, because they APPARENTLY don't work for HIS setup,
.
I had the same experience the other day when I was looking for some inkjet printable media on newegg.com. I saw some TYs at a really good price and I am used to seeing TYs having average reviews being 5 out of 5. But this was not the case with these newer type of ink jet writables that are DVD+R 8x. This person gave the TYs a 1 and rated themselves as having the highest level of tech knowledge.
In the review, they got the TY because of their reputation and having so many people recommending them and how TY was really the worst in the industry !!
THEN, I saw what occured, this person with the sekf designation of having the "highest level of technical knowledge" was trying to print directly on the TY inkjet DVD+Rs, with their Casio thermal printer. It says RIGHT SMACK on the front of the documentation as well as the box that these Casios come in that, their thermal printers are NOT to be used on inkjet ready media !! Inkjet printable media work great on INKJET, media direct printers !!.
I wasted a lot of time a few weeks ago, when I posted a long list items to check if a burn fails. In my experience, a burn usually fails for reasons other than faulty media, but it can occur. From drivers, to garbage floating around in RAM (I believe in re-booting before burnng), invalid software configuration, old driver, new driver, wrong software selection, disk drive out of space, etc.
The point is that if a burn/ri[ fails, it is good not to have a knee jerk reaction and assume that it is because of bad media.
With video in particular, I like to first burn to a "image" filer (iso or .nrg), then associate the image file created to a virtual drive and try to see the video for a few seconds at the beginning and at the end. I want to see if it is in synch first and just see if it works. I have done a lot of stupid things in my time, like forget to move in the audio, bring in the adio from a difference video, or maybe, I just need to reboot. This might take longer time on the front end to save time on the back end.
If things are fine, I then use Nero 7.x or Clonedvd2 (there also might be some driver related software running in the background), and burn the image file, which in Nero, takes one click. Image files burn very fast.

It is insane to reply to oneself, but I am getting back on the TY topic in reply to kivory666, the good doctor.
In my experience, , the TYs have been to most compatible media I have ever used, from CDs to DVDs. I have a feeling that CD/DVD Rom vendors will test with TY first or close to first before they release their hardware. Same with software vendors.
Have you ever seen and read/write software, or CD/DVD reader/writers, that list media that they have tested successfully with and NOT list TY?
I never, ever have a failure with a TY.
On my first CD/DVD burner, I had some failures with BeAll media, at that time. This was early into the burners that would do both + and - formats. The vendor was great (Optowrite). They knew that TY worked great, even with this special Sanyo propriatary double compressed format. They had me mail in a bunch of BeAlls to them and mailed me some Branded TY media.
It was a win/win. I got to use the best, branded TY media, which fixed everything and the vendor got to do some testing with BeAll and released an updated driver to work with BeAll.
It was after that, with some help from the Optorite support person, I purchased some Fuji CD-R which are all are TYs. In the case of these Fuji CD-Rs, that have dark blue packaging, the Fuji model number for this 50 pack is consistent with Fuji branded TYs.
Back to yo ur point though, I have purchased Verbatim media that were CMC. With Memorex, it will usually be CMC, but you never know, They will go with the cheapest batch they can purchase.
In Colorado/U.S. I have never seen TY branded media in a retail store.
I really wish the packaging would display the mfg ID. Or if they would have a single blank media out that we could bring to a PC to test. An advantage for me with some retail stores that I can bring my media back if it is not what I expect.
http://www.neato.com , also sells TY media.

aabbccdd,
Thanks for the post.
I know you won't believe me, BUT, I was just going to post the same information about the FUJIs as you.
The key is, if the Fuji media is made in Japan, its TY.
The last Fuji's I purchased were DVD+R DL 2X, which are Riteks. I got a three pack andwere the first DLs I trieed on my liteon drive. They worked perfectly.
I believe the Fuji DVD+R, made in Taiwan are Riteks as well.
I have burnt hundreds of Fuji CD-Rs, which were all TYs. I do have some loyalty from my 35mm film days, when I found that Fujidilm 35mm file was less costly and superior to the Kodak 35mm film.
I saw that Samsclub, which tends to have lower cost media has some great deals on Fuji media. BUT ......they are all from Taiwan, therefore NOT the TY.
It was at Samsclub where I got 100 Verbatims, which were all CMC.
Sometimes places like SAMSClub get special versions of hardware and appliances.
I am going to say something here that I have been thinking about media. I have been thinking the since the burn/rip software as well as the DVD reader/writers have been improving, especially with better firmware, that the brand of media might be becoming over-rated as its level of importance goes. I think another issue to add is the factor that the media buying public seems to be purchasing more on pure price, than before.
This puts pressure on some of the media vendors to go to the CMCs that are made in China.
I wonder what media that the organized crime families in the MPAA and RIAA are using now ?

I don't know about CD-R's, but Verb DVD media hasn't been manufactured by CMC Mag for quite some time. On the 8x Sony 50 spindles of DVD+R's and DVD-R's, look for MIJ on the label and the Octogonal spacers, those will be TY's. Occasionally you'll see MIJ Sony's that have the circular spacer that're TY's as well, these will be on the older batches of Sony-branded TY's.

aabbccdd,
I think you are correct aboutthe DLs. I think Verbatim are the originators of the blank DLs.
Also, there are not many vendors making them. The price on the Verbatim's seem to be the best as well.
I have used only my three pack of Fuji's DVD+R DL first, which were made by Ritek. The others are from a 10 pack, that I have used about half of, of Verbatim DVD +R DLs 2X.
There is some misleading stuff about the speed of those Verbatims. They are listed on newegg.com at 8X. Then, in reading more about people's experience with them, the max speed was all over the place.
On verbatim's web site, they list the box as 2X, with a paper over it that says 8x, (when compatible). I emailed Verbatim to be specfic about what "compatible" means to them. I received a type of "I don't know, I only work here" type of reply.
What was good was that I asked Liteon specifically about my SOHW-1693S and the Verbatim compatibility. They informed me that those Verbatim's will not go faster than 4X for recording, which is true. I think that for the SOHW-1693S, that 4X is the recording limit for all DVD+R DLs.
Actually, I was very impressed on how fast it was to record at 2X. I'm so impressed that I can make on click and the software, hardware and media can get it together to record 2 DVDs worth of information, without any manual manipulation on my behalf, and do it perfectly.
I mostly record on DVD+Rs and CD-Rs. I only will use the DVD+R DLs for backing up something very special or for someomne I really like.
aabbccdd, could you tell me something about the woman who is on your messages. I do much prefer that picture than a picture of a Iron Maiden cover.:-)

Quote: What's a dry county?
These are counties in certain states where buying alcohol is prohibited. Usually the bible belt states like kentucky and tennessee that I am aware of.I believe it is voted for or against by the citizens of those counties.
My grand parents lived in a dry county-Todd county KY. Next county over-Logan county wasn't.There's a big bar/dance hall right on that county line and I'm sure it was pretty busy, LOL
Lake Cumberland in kentucky is surrounded by dry counties.I've heard stories that when people ran out of beer/booze-they had to drive through 4-5 counties just to buy it. When you go to that lake, take plenty of alkyhol because it might be an adventure to find it.
Congrats on the bargain hunting cincyrob. Prices are cheaper in the south, probably due to cost of living?

Is this for REAL? I had heard the term but thought it was something from the old days. If this is real, I would like to see Gramps and Granny, like the Beverly Hillbillies, make that trip to San Francisco, a city on another planet. I bet he'd blow an atery before he made it down one block on Polk!!

Those dry counties are real. I didn't know they had some hefty fines if you got caught drinking in a dry county. I thought is was just for purchasing alcohol only.
When you drive through a dry county, ther'll be more beer cans and bottles thrown in the ditches than in a normal county, LOL

A sure sign of a dry county, loads of liquor stores on the edges of border counties, generally here in the Carolinas there are no totally dry counties, just ones that don't serve/sell on Sundays. So run to the neighboring county, load up and head home, no questions asked.
