**Even the "thumbnail previews" in the XMB are skipping frames.
Don't laugh guys, I'm using a PC with the following specs for demux/mux:
P3 1 Ghz
256 SDRAM
Playstation 3 is the 40 GB version with 2.20 fw. LOL!!! Sorry. One thing I have noticed with all of the BD and HDDVD rips I D/L, they are 23.976 fps, not 29.97 fps... this might be the problem. I'm not sure how to fix this, just adding my two cents. Hope this helps.

ezryel, have you tried using the latest tsMuxeR?
You can get this on my download links thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346
This link is also posted on the very first post on this thread. I will try to keep that as updated as possible. It usually helps to have the latest version of software. tsMuxeR is up to v1.7.2 now.

I am referring to tsMuxeR v1.7.2. The Author has stated that improvements have been made for VC-1 support.
See my download section here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346#3869774
I try to keep all these as updated as possible! :-
I've tried the new one (1.7.2) doesn't seem to work. The ps3 sees the vc1 as a mpeg-2 video codec on tversity, but when i copy it to the hd, the ps3 shows unsupported data and can't even show what video codec it is in the information for the vide. I'm actually trying to run the video off my hard disk. Do you think that is a reason why my vc1 files don't play in m2ts container? If i burned the movie onto a disk, would it play better then?

PS3 has a limited VC-1 support when NOT playing from a BR disc. It only handles VC-1 and 2 channel audio. 5.1 doesn't play. M2TS as a container is not supported by the PS3 for VC-1 At the moment there is no chance for me to watch the movies without reencoding.
I do this with ffmpeg
ffmpeg -y -f vc1 -r 24000/1001 -i /mnt/harry/00000.track_4113.vc1
-vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -maxrate 25M -bufsize 8M -r 24000/1001
-i /mnt/harry/00000.track_4355.ac3 -acodec copy /mnt/harry/output.ts
You can even use higher bitrate (30M or 35M) but I don't know if you could see the difference. After hours of transcoding, put output-ts into your smartlab tsMuxer and make a M2TS. Copy this to your mediaserver and watch it. Maybe you habe to rename it there to M2T.

Well, just give MPEG2VIDEO a try if filesize doesn't matter too much. It's much faster than h264 encoding if you select a (max)bitrate like 30M. Audio is untouched so there is no loss at all. And: it plays perfectly on your PS3 without headaches ;)
I hope that with a firmware like 2.50 Sony WILL support MKV as a container format and WILL support various video and audio combinations (MPEG2/DTS and VC-1/AC3 5.1 aso).

Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=16 / deblock=1:-2:-1 / analyse=0x3:0x113 / me=esa / subme=7 / me-prepass=0 / brdo=1 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=1 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=0 / threads=6 / nr=0 / decimate=0 / mbaff=0 / bframes=16 / b_pyramid=1 / b_adapt=1 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / wpredb=1 / bime=1 / keyint=240 / keyint_min=24 / scenecut=40(pre) / rc=crf / crf=18.0 / rceq='blurCplx^(1-qComp)' / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=10 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / ip_ratio=1.40 / pb_ratio=1.30 / aq=0
yedgee, your problem is because the h264 stream is encoded above the 4.1 level specifications. The first factor that points this out is the reference frames. The maximum allowed is 4 for level 4.1 compliancy at 1080p, although I have played a h264 video with 5 reference frames and it played on the PS3 (this was because the resolution was 720p so the decoded picture buffer could handle it). For level 4.1 compliancy the maximum reference frames allowed is 4 for 1080p content and 9 for 720p content. As you can see your encode has 16 reference frames which is definitely too much. Also there are 16 b-frames. The maximum allowed is 3 b-frames. Your only option is to re-encode the video.
Note: Something is messing with the formatting on this page. I think it might be the command line for ffmpeg. the_voice and kpuz is it possible you could edit your posts. Maybe press enter half way along that command line.

Are your movies m2ts, if they are fast forwarding and rewinding shouldn't be a problem once on the hard drive. If you are playing them from a Data DVD I recommend transfering it to the hard driove first.
1080p playback: Are your PS3 settings set up to display 1080i/p, can your TV display a 1080p signal?

Settings>Display Settings>Video Output Settings. Select your cable then whatever resolutions your tv supports.

Yes, it should. You do not need to use h264info anymore. tsMuxeR is now at a stage to handle this correctly.

It sounds to me as if mkv2vob is searching for something that isn't there. I would recommend you uninstall it, then re-install it again.
I just want ask you something. Are you looking to repack it into a different container? Or re-encode it?
mkv2vob exports using a M2TS container now. That will increase final file size by about 6%, so your 7.94GB file will be too big even for a DVD-9.

Get MediaInfoRaw from here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346
Then post all the information it gives you here. :-)
Note: Please remove any reference to movie title when copying MediaInfoRaw's text.

Just a little tip to save you from finding out the hard way.
In the more recent versions of TSMuxer, options have been added into the video stream muxing capability, notably the ability to add picture timing info.
I found that I could bypass the h264info step by muxing a compliant H.264 video stream with the following options:
- Change fps set to 24000/1001 (assuming 23.976fps)
- Change level set to 4.1
- Add picture timing info ENABLED
- Continually insert SPS/PPS DISABLED
The resulting M2TS file plays perfectly on the PS3, previously in earlier versions of TsMuxer you would get a corrupt file as TsMuxer did not have the picture timing info setting.
However much to my displeasure after deleting a few original source files I found that seeking does not work and attempting to resume play causes the PS3 to either lock up or sit there doing nothing for a long time (like 5 minutes) before resuming.
So h264info is still a necessary step!

Here's what I've tried so far and still not getting it. Starting with an .evo file ripped from HD DVD.
1. used Evodemux with default settings to extract a single h264 and e-ac3 file
2. used h264info to change level to 4.1
3. used tsMuxeR to mux a .m2ts
Here's the output below:
SmartLabs tsMuxeR. Version 1.6.3(b) http://www.smlabs.net
Decoding H264 stream (track 1): Profile: High@4.1 Resolution: 1920:1080p Frame rate: 29.97fps
H.264 muxing fps not set. Get it from stream.
B-pyramid level 2 detected. Shift DTS to 3 frames
Decoding E-AC3 (DD+) stream (track 2): Bitrate: 1536Kbps Sample Rate: 48KHz Channels: 6
H264 bitstream changed: insert SPS/PPS units
Processed 183666 video frames
Mux successful complete.
Muxing time: 64 min 14.8349 sec
I end up with a 21 Gig file. I used to be able to stream using SimpleCenter but now I just get an error "HTTP 500"; I can figure that out later or turn to a different media server.
So I split the file to 3.95 Gigs each using HDBDSplitGUI, put them on a FAT32 external and copy them to the PS HDD.
Result: I navigate to the file in XMB and start it; the pS3 is non responsive, just a black sceen and no audio. I have to press START or X to get the PS3 to respond, indicated by the little play/start button at the bottom left of the screen, but still just a black screen.
I can only see an image when I ffw and rw 10x or 30x, when I hit START or X the picture just freezes on the frame at that time; I can move through the content only by using the ffw and rw function.
I tried muxing in TsMuXeR with just the h264, no e-ac3 as I suspected the audio file.
Result: jerky, frame skipping playback with some macroblocking, no sound of course.
**Even the "thumbnail previews" in the XMB are skipping frames.
Don't laugh guys, I'm using a PC with the following specs for demux/mux:
P3 1 Ghz
256 SDRAM
Playstation 3 is the 40 GB version with 2.20 fw.
HD-DVD streams have to have the pulldown information removed - you need to make sure the set PPS and Remove Pulldown options are set in h264info, along with the level set to 4.1 and FPS set to 23.976 (many people don't do the last step of FPS but I've found I sometimes get jerky video without it).

I was wondering this myself. I used tsMuxeR to create some M2TS files without h264info and they played. As you said previous versions of tsMuxeR created a file that would not play at all without the h264info step. However, as you said they seem to stick a bit. Mine don't seem as bad as yours but there is noticeable sticking (maybe about 5 seconds).
Can I ask, after you run the raw h264 stream through h264info... When you re-mux with tsMuxeR, did you enable picture timing info and disable insert SPS/PPS?
In regards to deleting your source files, why can't you just demux M2TS stream with tsMuxeR, fix the h264 stream with h264info and remux again?

Hi - after running h264info I remux using tsMuxer with none of the options set (level, fps, picture timing, sps/pps).
Yeah I tried demuxing and fixing up the streams with h264info and that works!

It's good to hear that worked for you. I just let the Author of tsMuxeR know about this sticking (FF/REW) problem. I will post back when I get clarification on what's causing this.
