my goal is to see MKV movies on PS3.
MKV2VOB is very slow.
i must have subtitles and tsMuxeR option is the best i like.
but most of the BD rips are not in the blue ray resolution and causing this green bar to appear.
is there a quick way to overcome this problem.
i tried meGUI but it seems that it's encoding the movie.
thanks,

Yup, that's waht you need to do. In order for subs you need a properly sized video and the only way to achieve that is to recode.
The guide at the beginnign of this thread will help you with everything.

OK then,
How long it will take to recode a MKV file with the new borders?
i know it depends on the computer's HW but i want to have an indication.

A 2 hour 720p movie with a good MeGUI/x264 profile on a dual core, maybe 4-6 hours. Double that for 1080p.

What do you mean by a "problem"? There are lots of problems one can have with an HDMI cable.
For instance, I once had the problem of not having an HDMI cable. That part of my life was rough. I went sleepless nights trying to discern the text on my TV. I begged God, Vishnu, and Buddha to give me an HDMI cable for Christmas. I finally ended up selling my kidney for $20 to get one... and then I realized I could've gotten it for a measly $5.
Which is a completely false story, but it illustrates my point. What's your issue?

Ok, here is the problem I have:
My TV is only compatible with 720p or 1080i. I want to watch a 1080p MKV video (h.264 high@5.1) on my PS3.
So I used TSMUXER, muxed the mkv to mt2s (converted high@5.1 to 4.1) and burned it with nero with UDF 2.50.
PROBLEM: --> Only sound, but no picture.
I tried alot of different things:
-Used TVersity to stream the MT2S, but gave the same result...
-Used MEGUI and/or AUTOMKV just to resize 1920x816 to 1280x720 and turn down the bitrate a bit. IT worked on my PS3, but since it TAKES HOURS AND HOURS TO CONVERT an hour of FULL HD material(even on dual core E6600 with 8800GT card), I'm searching other methods.
So is there anyway I could just change the 1080p to 1080i, interlace it????
Or does anybody have another solution that doesn't take HOURS to do?
PS: A retail Blu-Ray with 1080P picture just works and plays fine on my 720P TV? How the hell does that work???

Your 1080p mkv in question would need to be recoded regardless, it's not compatible for PS3 playback. It was most likely made for PC playback.

Why not? It's a mkv with h.264 codec (high@5.1) wich I change to 4.1... So what's the problem?

Initially the h264 file was encoded outside of what the PS3 or any standalone can play. This issue is nothing new, however newer 1080p rips are mostly compatible.

OK I have converted several mkv's and they all play great on my PS3. I have however, come across a few that don't seem to be convertable. This sucks because the files are so massive and i dont want to have acquired them for nothing. so before deleting them i thought i'd ask here first.
Stats on the file: 720p.HDDVD.DTS.x264
Stream 0
Codec: avc1
English
1280x544
FR 23.976
Stream1 codec: DTS
English
Channels 6
Smaple rate 48kHz
Ok so I load up mkv2vob and use my normal settings, optput extension mpg, mpeg-2 codec (i have tried encoding to a vob but its the same).
After a successful encoding I try to load up the file with VLC and I get no audio, or video, the timer reads 0:00:00 / 0:00:00.
What's up here? I am baffled, the file appears to be the same as most of the others in my mkv collection but i have a few that this happens. any suggestions or ideas as to what i'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!

mrasstits,
What you need to do is convert the dts audio to ac3 then repackage it with the video using tsMuxer. I steer clear of MKV2VOB all together.
1. Download eac3to and tsMuxer
2. Open TsMuxer and add the MKV file. Only check the box next to the DTS stream and go to the "demux" option.
3. Once that is done, open eac3to and add the dts file and press convert.
4. Now go back to tsmuxer and add the mkv file and the newly created ac3 file. Uncheck the DTS stream from the mkv and mux the h.264 and ac3 to .ts. Once it is finished muxing change the file extension from .ts to .mpg.
Now watch on your PS3.

Hi all,
Can any of you very clever peeps please help me with my ps3 streaming problem.
For some reason my films/tv series have started to judder when I watch them via my ps3. Alot of these are XVIDs which I assume after doing some reading, the PS3 doesn't really like. The problem is I havn't really had a problem before just those 1 in every 5 films saying "unsupported".
The funny thing is I do have some films that play great with no stuttering.
I cannot work out why out of 3 of my films taken from ramdom, 1 stutters, 1 doesn't play at all and the final 1 works perfectly.
Here are the properties -
1. Audio Bit rate -384, Video 23/frames,data rate 1418, Sample 12bit,Video compression FFDS. (Stutters).
2. Audio Bit rate - 192, audio format mpeg layer-3, 29/frames,data 765,video,24bit,compression FFDS. (Unsupported).
3. Audio Bit rate - 144, audio format mpeg layer-3, 23 frame,data 893,sample 12,compression FFDS. (Works perfect).
I have a powerful PC and an ATI 4800 card.
Sorry if this sounds jibberish and please accept my apologies for being a dunce.
Thanks in advance.

I don't think any of us have figured it out fully, but there's something weird with the PS3 in that it just won't accept certain .avi files, be they Xvid or DivX or just plain .avi.
If you keep getting an issue, you could try re-encoding the video. The PS3 is usually pretty good with playing mp3 audio tracks, too, so... yeah, I doubt that the audio is the issue.
And it also doesn't seem to be a streaming issue, because those files aren't very high in terms of bitrate, so they shouldn't be stuttering if they're streamed correctly. The only problem I could see is if you've got your PS3 like three houses down or so.

Are there any problems since the 2.50 update
i have been able to convert many mkvs to BD structured DVDS
but recently two failed and i don't know why, the funniest thing
is a DVD called PS3AVCHD... but when i put it into the PS3
i get "this operation is not available here"
and just a black screen i even tried to change the resolution
and reencode the video or the audio
the weird thing is if i take the media file from the stream folder
and i burn it on a dvd in udf (not BDMV , CERTIFICATE folders )
with the it works !!!
but of course no more chapters , subtitles ..
Any of you can help ?
Thank you

In order to have subs you need to mux to Blu-ray, use tsMuxeR for that. Also, your video stream must be a BD compliant resolution, 1920x1080 or 1280x720. You should be able to import your mkv2vob file in tsMuxeR, definetly the mkv will load. However I highly doubt the your movie is of proper resolution... mkv usually never are.

I was hoping that someone bumped into the same problem using mkv2vob ...
I know the drill with tsmuxerGUI , actually i'm using it to make litle avchd's so i can play them quickly on my PS3 (using your quick tut about how to play avchd with -ME)
Another question :
-if i add some black bars to the top and bottom of the video so i can get the bd compliant resolution , would i get an distorted video ?

Not at all. Blu-ray resolutions are simpler to work with as they use only one pixel shape (square pixel) as opposed to DVD using two (4:3 and 16:9). When someone rips a Blu-ray and crops the borders the pixel aspect ratio remains the same. All that happens is that the black borders have simply been chopped off to conserve extra bits. I guess they don't realise how little bits the borders actually use. They are all black! Reference frames and B-frames will be so efficient at encoding these black borders that it would use up next to no data at all.
Anyway, to help you with adding borders. You will need to work out what the resolution of your MKV is and then minus that from the target resolution. For example, if your MKV is 1280 x 528. Your target for Blu-ray compliancy will be 1280 x 720. So 720 - 528 = 192. 192 / 2 = 96. So you will need to add 96 lines to the top and the bottom of your video.

Ok I have a movie.mkv. I used tsmuxer and also tried mkv2vob. The file is 8.0 gigs. When wach program converts them it creats a part1 and part2 of the file. The both files are about 8.25. I want to burn them on a dual layer dvd but image burn and nero says the files are too big.
How the hell if a dual layer is 8.45? Can someone tell me players how to makes mkv (bluray) files fit into a dual layer.
Thanks
