Right now all that is possible within the wmv container is 2.0 PCM audio, even if it is 5.1 wma.
Is there really a good chance of video quality loss if I re-encode from VC-1 to h.264?

Not really, just keep the bitrate the same. Use Nero Recode, it lets you select the file size, after you choose that you will see the bitrate output. Just make sure you select the proper AVC profile, Cinema for 720p or HDTV for 1080p. If you decide to keep the exact same bitrate the h264 file will be slightly smaller, also there is the option to convert the wma to Dolby Digital 5.1 with Nero.

Megui also can do this but I am not as familiar with that program

K, That worked really well for a lot of the files, except some do not work. The audio works fine on my PS3, but the video never shows up. Any ideas?

Is the video 1080p or 720p? Did you remember to change the AVC level to 4.1?

Every 1080p film I convert with ts muxer never works. I dont know how you guys get it working. Ryu said to use nero recode but I cant get a format to work. I have been sticking with 720p films. I really cant see a difference visual on my PC but the hdtv might be a little different. What formats are good formats to convert the mkv files to without getting loss of quality, cause if its possible to get 1080p to work I would like to.

For some reason 1080p movies need a recode, here is what I do... this method is a little long but it's the only way I know how.
1. Demux all streams (video and audio) with mkvextract
2. Remux to to mp4 (video only) using YAMB or Megui, I use Megui because YAMB for some reason quits on me at the 4gb mark.
3. Recode your mp4 file using Nero Recode to AVC HDTV profile (1080p)... this step will take several hours.
4. Now you need the raw h264 file from the new Nero mp4 file you just made, you can use YAMB to extract this but it's been acting goofy for me... so I use mkvmerge to make a mkv from the Nero file, then mkvextract to get the raw h264 file.
5. Once you have the raw h264 mux everything back together (video and audio) with tsMuxeR, nothing needs to be changed just make sure you choose m2ts.

I know, crazy! But like I said... it works. I'm pretty sure all this can be done in one step using Megui and AVISynth but I'm a completed noob when it comes to AVIsynth.

Hope this helps.

Wow that is a long process but I will try it. I have a PC that pretty much is a file server and lately Ive been dedicating it to encoding and decoding so time is no factor for that baby lol. Thanks again.

Yes, that is the right way. :-)

It seems mp4box (which is what YAMB is a GUI for) can only extract raw h264 files from a mp4 container that are 4GB or less. So, for our usage that is not enough. Which is why we need to do the mp4-->mkv-->raw h264 step.

One thing I would like to add to that is when muxing with tsMuxeR, disable "Continually insert SPS/PPS". From what I understand it improves seeking (FF/REW).

BTW, DaMan1200, if you think those steps are long... You don't want to get me started on some of the methods I could give you. Seriously, that is not so bad. Things can get even more complicated when you start looking at doing full Blu-ray (or even regualar DVD) authoring. You can start including things like multiple audio tracks, switchable subtitles, chapter points, menus etc. etc.

I hear you Ryu. Thanks for the input. Ill try it without the sps/pps.

I actually have another question. I am trying to get my season sets of DBZ to stream to my ps3 through nero mediahome. I used dvd decrypter to stream the files to .vob. Then I used autogk to get them to avi files.
I think my problem is that the audio is DTS. Not sure what to do from there. Are there any programs you guys recommend for avi conversions? I converted my south park and family guy avi files the same way but they arent dts audio.

OK, so I re-encoded to 1280x720 using Nero (the only way I know how), the 192 lines that were added show up as a blur across the bottom of the screen. Is there another way to do this so there is no blur, maybe just more black lines?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, you will need to use the AddBorders command in AVIsynth. Also javadudd and Odin24, I would recommend getting familiar with MeGUI and using x264 as your encoding application. On my download links thread I have included MeGUI x264 Blu-ray profiles: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346

By using those profiles you are ensuring that you are creating videos that are compliant with the Blu-ray standard. The only thing you will need to change is the bitrate to reach your desired final file size. Don't forget to allow 6% for M2TS/Blu-ray header size.

BTW, for a DVD9 6% wasn't enough. I shot for a 8152 mb target and left just about 500 mb for the header, I was too big by 140 mb. Try closer to 8% for DVD9

I've never had any problem with the 6% method. It could be the video encoder that didn't respect your bitrate choice accurately. I think Nero Recode can do that sometimes. I always use conservative figures when selecting bitrate and round everything down, that way I allow for any variances.

To test this, next time you do an encode write down the bitrate you chose and check it against the final file. If the final file has a slightly higher bitrate then what you chose, then you know that is what caused the problem.

I am guessing you are using DivX or Xvid as your video encoder? For 5.1 channel sound in an avi file supported by the PS3, your best choice is Dolby Digital (AC3).

You can use EAC3to (along with EAC3toGUI) to convert DTS to AC3. You can get those applications from the link in my signature.

If anyone here is good at VC1 to AVC conversion, can you please tell me if this command for x264.exe is good enough for lossless conversion. I got it off someone else so I have no clue how good it is:

x264 --bitrate 16000 --progress --threads auto -b 3 --b-bias 5 --b-pyramid --weightb --b-rdo --bime -8 -t 1 -o NUL untitled.avs
x264 --bitrate 16000 --progress --threads auto -b 3 --b-bias 5 --b-pyramid --weightb --b-rdo --bime -8 -t 1 -o untitled.mkv untitled.avs

Hey guys Im trying to play an MKV file on my PS3 but Im having some problems. Im trying to convert it to m2ts with tsmuxer but when I load the file into tsmuxer it doesnt recognize the audio stream. I can mux the video but then I still have no audio. I ran the file through videoinspector and it says it is 6 channel, AAC HE codec if that helps any.

As far as I can tell, it usually under 720p, random numbers like 566p and one was like 450p. Yeah I always go to 4.1. There was even one that I tried at 3.1, and 2.1 etc... just to see if that would work. I even tried a long way of doing it which involved using TSMuxer to demux and then using ffmpeg to re-mux (not sure if that's the correct word) which resulted in an vob file which i then remuxed into m2ts using tsmuxer. Very frustrating as it appears to be random ones which work and random ones which do not. BTW all files have played video on my computer fine.

x264 is not a lossless encoder, so matter what you do there will some information lost. However, it is in fact possible to minimise picture quality loss to a point where it isn't visually perceivable.

That x264 command line has nowhere near enough information to guarantee Blu-ray compliancy. You need to ensure that the right number of reference frames are used. You also need to ensure max bitrate isn't exceeded (40000Kbs for video) etc. Here is a command line I am using right at this very minute for a 1080p encode (to DVD-9).

--pass 2 --bitrate 9000 --stats ".stats" --level 4.1 --keyint 24 --min-keyint 1 --ref 3 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-pyramid --b-rdo --bime --weightb --direct auto --subme 6 --trellis 1 --partitions p8x8,b8x8,i4x4,i8x8 --8x8dct --ipratio 1.1 --pbratio 1.1 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --vbv-maxrate 38000 --qcomp 0.5 --me umh --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "output" "input" --mvrange 511 --aud --nal-hrd --sar 1:1

AAC audio is not compatible with the Blu-ray format therefore tsMuxeR is not the right application, unless you intend to re-encode the audio to Dolby Digital (AC3). You should use the mp4 container instead and that will play fine as long as your video file is compatible.

It's not random files that don't work. There is a way to check if the file is Blu-ray compliant but it's a quite complicated. It all comes down to reference frames, b-frames, b reference frames, b pyramids etc. that influence the DPB (Decoded Picture Buffer)... Anyway, before I lose you with all the technical jargon. There are two ways to save time... 1) Cut a small sample file (100MB) to check if it will play on your PS3, if not you will need to re-encode. 2) Grab MediaInfoRaw from the thread in my signature and copy and paste the encoding options information here and I will tell you if it is compatible.

Thanks to the people on this thread especially RYU77 and Odin24 I have been able to stream all my movies to the PS3. I do have a question, has anyone been able to play DTS on the PS3 after the new 2.3 update? I just tried and get only video. I am now going to use eac3to to convert the dts to AC3 like i have done in the past but wanted to know if any had any luck with DTS.

DTS in m2ts is a no-go, not compatible. If you love DTS like I do you need to make a Blu-Ray structured disc (BD9). tsMuxeR can do this but the video resolution must be either 1280x720p (not 1280x544p, etc) or 1920x1080p (not 1920x800p, etc). To change the resolution you must recode the video file first. I use Nero Recode, Ryu on the other hand would probably use Megui with AVIsynth... I haven't fully got the hang of that one just yet... but I'm learning.

In order to do this using Nero Recode first you need to demux/remux to a file type compatible with Nero. I use mkvextract to get the raw h264 file, then Megui to mux it to mp4 (video only) then resize that with Nero. Once you load the file in to Nero click the "Video" button on the right, go to the Resize tab and manually enter the appropriate dimensions. Once that is done I remux back to mkv with the original DTS track using mkvmerge... then finally load that mkv with tsMuxeR but instead of muxing to m2ts mux to Blu-Ray. Burn the two folders (BDMV and Certificate) using Nero Burning Rom, create a DVD-UDF data dics, make sure you change the partition type to 2.5 or else all this work is for nothing (will not play). Now you have an AVCHD disc with DTS!!!

Ryu will probably tell you this is the long way about this, but once again this is the only way I know how... right now.

Be careful, Nero allows for 8152mb on a DVD9, when you resize your video make sure you account for a 6% header for the Blu-Ray structured disc... I use 8% just to be safe. So basically make sure you total remux is no larger than 7663mb (6%) or 7500mb (8%).

Hope this helps.

I've already been told that subtitles are a no-go for M2TS. Wanted to make sure that was true, and ask if there was another way to do them? I don't WANT to burn them in, but if it's really the only option I would.

And I haven't figured out how to make a DivX file that will actually play (and would like to avoid the more lossy codec if possible).

hello again.
i am having a bit of a problem, again, the conversion process goes well, the burn goes well, but when i put it in my ps3 and try to copy it to the hdd i get this:

An error occurred during the copy operation
(8003051E)

can anyone help me with this one, i cant seem to get red kawa file server to work anymore either so popping the file onto a dvd9 is my only option, and if i cant copy it to the hdd i am a bit screwed when i wanna stop it half way thru.

thanx for reading and i REALLY hope someone can help me!

Thanks for all your help man, I am amazed at what you know about video files haha. Here is the MediaInfoRaw.exe message about the MKV file I am trying to convert. I assume you want it for the original and not the newly created m2ts file but here is for the MKV file:

BTW I do believe that this was originally a Red DVD not a Blu Ray
